Todays remote consult was with a vet, to say it over ran while we chatted about published research, information freely shared on forums and groups, plus my PhD to date, would be a little bit of an understatement 🤣

1st, 3rd month visit of the 6mth good doer project done today. Had to fight the snow and ice a bit, but it was well worth it! Results so far…
- on his rug being taken off I was so excited to get him on the weighbridge.
- 11 stone 4lbs down (more than his rider weighs)
- BCS from a 4.5 down to 3.5/5 (we have reached healthy)
- first time he’s reached the top of the canter track without having to catch his breath
- on track for improved insulin response to a sugar challenge (aka spring grass).
- my fav’ owner comment “I don’t actually feel like Ive actually had to change much”.
For me, this is the first time in real life that I’m seeing the reasons why I’m doing this research.

Well 2 snow enforced impromptu office days. Instead of being on yards for mid-winter check-in’s I’ve been sat at my desk transcribing (typing up word for word) the owner interviews from
the Good Doer Project. Im so proud of all the owners involved for freely talking about their experiences of what it’s like to care for a good doer. Already themes are emerging, and my hopes for the PhD yielding results that could potentially help owners in the future is really starting to grow. There are still just a few available spaces left. If you’d like more information please message with an email address.

❤️Cobby Bottom🍎
If there was one equestrian phrase/terminology you could ban, what would it be?
For me it would be “cobby bottom”!
❤️ 🍎 shaped rumps are not a breed/type standard, they are a sign over an overweight horse. Unfortunately in certain types it’s now so common it’s considered normal. Photo evidence that a healthy body condition score on a cobs bottom can be achieved. I’d love to see your cobby bottoms in the comments

What’s the best combination for muscle development???
Correct work + well fitting tack + good management + time (3mths between pics following a remote consult) PLUS a correctly balanced diet. Simply adding a supplement or feed won’t do it alone. BUT a horses diet must provide all the nutrients at “optimal” levels for all the work to effectively convert to results. 💪 🐴❤️

Happy New Year 🥳 2025
I hope everyone has had a fabulous Christmas 🎄 and New Year 🎆
I would just like to say a massive thank you to each and everyone of you that I have worked with in the past year. 2024 has certainly been a mixed bag. Professionally I couldn’t be prouder to have worked with a huge range of owners and their horses, all wanting to ensure they are doing the best for their horses. Working with prestigious groups such as the RDA, British showjumping/dressage/Horse Society. Passing the stage 1 assessment of my PhD, moving onto stage 2. The Good Doer Research Project being granted ethics approval and commencing data collection. Articles published in BHS magazine and The Horse Hub. Equinutrition achieving a Registered Trade Mark. Personally 2024 has been a bit tougher. Having to arrange power of attorney (and all it entails) following my brother having a stroke. Friends having serious health issues. Then loosing Kevin, was heart breaking. Adapting to working as an Independent Equine Nutritionist horseless, has been challenging. So I just wanted to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you and your 🐴, that have been a part of 2024.
I’m really excited to see what 2025 has in store…

I love working with Veterans. Not only do they usually possess the biggest characters but because they pose some really interesting nutritional challenges.
Abigail Ingledew Equestrian thanks for the update post.

Just a lil Tommi appreciation post as he’s not been on here for a while 🥰

Still going strong at 29, he’s been retired about 5 years now 🤔 (don’t quote me on that) and better than ever!!
We did some carrot stretches with both boys last night and he’s more flexible than Clarky!!
Still as cheeky as ever and loves giving kisses 😘

He’s looking almost the best he ever has and I don’t want to jinx it but it seems that we *might* be managing to keep his weight on this winter with the help of Jen Little at Equinutrition 🥰

Yesterday I enjoyed a day off from work and the research. I will admit showing a mini stallion (in a mixed class) without the ability to see is not something I will repeat in a hurry 🤣🎄

I am love love loving the progress of all those on the Good Doer Project. Yes I’m measuring several novel biometric and biomarkers during weightloss. To hopefully find something more sensitive to changes in weight than BCS, and something more meaningful for owners. I think I’m starting to see a pattern (but time and statistical analysis will tell) 7 weeks and 5% body weight loss between pics. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the differences in the comments.
P.S both images taken from the 30 second point of a 3 min video

You idiots! Those are not lollipops 🍭 they are saliva sponges 🧽. Now I can’t use those to collect saliva from the horses on the good doer project. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Did you know you can measure levels of stress (cortisol) and inflammation (alpha-amylase) in horses, from their saliva?
