✨ For as long as they need ✨

Dogs use their noses to process the environment around them and understand the who, what, where, when and why of the world they live in 🌍

Here are a few reasons why you should let your dog sniff:

▪️ Sniffing is innate in dogs, meaning it is an essential behaviour that should be fulfilled in order to meet their wellbeing needs.

▪️ Sniffing can reduce stress and anxiety in dogs. It is particularly beneficial for reactive dogs as it enables them to come to terms with their environment and feel more at ease when out and about, reducing scanning behaviour etc.

▪️ Allowing your dog to sniff and use critical thinking to analyse the scents and their origins is a tiring but enriching experience for them, meaning they’re really getting the most out of their walk.

▪️ Sniffing is a great way to keep them mentally stimulated and ensure they’re ready for a good long nap once you return home, especially if you’ve found some novel items for your dog to sniff and process along the way.

▪️ And finally, it’s good for you too! Taking some extra time on your dog walk to stop and let your dog sniff is a perfect time to take some time for yourself, smell some flowers (probably not the same flower your dog is sniffing or you’ll look a little odd- although, who cares!), take a deep breath, list five things you’re thankful for, whistle your favourite song or practice some mindfulness. Then, once your dog has finished, move on together as a team.

So there it is, a few reasons why you should LET SNIFFING DOGS LIE 🌱

How long do you let your dog sniff for on walks?

Parallel dog walking, which involves walking with a calm nuetral dog, can provide several benefits for reactive or over-excited dogs. Here are some of the advantages:

1. Socialisation: Parallel dog walking allows reactive dogs to be exposed to other dogs in a controlled and structured environment. This can help them become more comfortable and confident around other dogs, reducing their reactivity over time.

2. Distraction and redirection: Walking alongside calm and well-behaved dogs can serve as a distraction for reactive dogs. By focusing on the parallel walk, reactive dogs can learn to redirect their attention away from potential triggers or stimuli that may cause them to react.

3. Calming influence: Being in the presence of calm and balanced dogs can have a soothing effect on reactive dogs. The energy and behavior of the other dog can help reduce the anxiety and excitement levels of the reactive dog, promoting a more relaxed state of mind.

4. Training opportunities: Parallel dog walking provides an opportunity for training and behavior modification. The presence of other dogs can be used as a training stimulus, allowing the reactive dog to practice obedience commands, impulse control, and positive behavior around other dogs.

5. Exercise and mental stimulation: Walking with other dogs can provide additional exercise and mental stimulation for reactive dogs. Engaging in a parallel walk can help burn off excess energy and promote a more balanced state of mind, reducing the likelihood of reactive behavior.

It is important to note that parallel dog walking should be done with caution and under the guidance of a professional dog trainer or behaviourist. Proper introductions, leash management, and monitoring of the dogs’ behaviour are essential to ensure a safe and positive experience for all dogs involved.

Force-free training is all about using positive reinforcement training without the need for aversive tools or intimidation. It focuses on dealing with the root of the problem instead of masking their feelings for a quick fix which can be damaging in the long run. Training becomes much more fun for you and your dog making them able to learn more effectively and strengthen your bond. Here at Walks ‘N’ Wiggles we only use these science-led techniques 🤎

I have been slowly building our bond so we can build up to walks. Rueben can be worried with handling off new people. In order to build up to attaching a lead to his collar, which he has previously found challenging, I am getting him used to my hand coming towards him today 🤎 He did so well ✨
