Can your dog walk as nicely as this pair?
Teaching puppies to walk nicely on a lead is an important skill. It keeps both dog and owner safe, as well as making walks more enjoyable!!
๐พ Hide and seek games ๐พ
Playing recall games with your dog improves their love of coming back to you - which can help with their ability and desire to respond to other recalls too!!
Check out this clever lad ๐คฉ
In the final class of our 6-week courses we put everything that we've learnt together and test out what our pups can do!
Touch! ๐พ
Hand touches are one of the activities we teach puppies in classes ๐ถ they can then be used in play as well as for recall and re-focusing too!!
Recall training with a difference! At intermediate level we practice recall in lots of different and exciting ways ๐พ๐พ
Getting pups to use their noses can help them calm down and think more clearly. It also gives them mental stimulation and an outlet for their search for food drive too ๐พ๐
Teaching dogs place names can have so many benefits - from recall and send aways, to lead walking and tricks!!
It's always good to make life more interesting and exciting for our dogs! Today is National Scavenger Hunt Day, so get them working for their food ๐ถ
The Dogs Trust have lots of great ideas on their website too: https://bit.ly/43yT962
(When using bottle a bottle as enrichment please make sure you supervise your pet)
Look at this girl go ๐คฉ๐
Super well done to my intermediates, who passed their training with flying colours this morning!!
Recall training! ๐คฉ
There are so many things that can affect recall, it needs to be fun and rewarding for our dogs above everything else. We also need to build up dogs confidence in coming back to us and their ability to ignore distractions - so here is one of the activities we work on in intermediate groups! Recall over obstacles ๐พ
This morning my outside group started working on their loose lead walking. They learn lots of elements which help dogs to walk nicely and then tried putting them all together!
Here's what the finished product looks like, demonstrated by me and Lena ๐พ
Loose lead walking is something lots of dogs (and owners) struggle with - but we can help!
We work in this in group class and I also offer one-to-one support for this issue too โบ๏ธ
Impulse Control!
This is teaching our dogs to want to listen to us, rather than just doing what they want. It is something I always talk about, but it is so important for pups and dogs to understand that it's better to listen to us - if we want them to follow our instructions. ๐ถ
Puppy socialisation is SO important, but it needs to be done carefully or it can go very wrong. In puppy courses we slowly introduce pups and let them build up confidence and understanding together before letting them play!
This is what doggy love looks like ๐ฅฐ snoozing together happily! Happy Valentines Day everyone!
One of the first activities we work on in group courses is getting dogs to stay sitting - this helps them to learn impulse control and means that dogs can be kept safely sat down even when you need to move or turn away, for example when you answer the door.
Look at this pair go! ๐คฉ
This is a skill that can help dogs learn not to run straight at things they want and help us keep them safe.
It's a bit warm for going out on walks or lots of active play (and sadly group classes ๐ฅต). But young dogs especially still need some mental stimulation - teaching simple new tricks or practicing training in a cool room can be perfect for this!! ๐ถ
So to make up for not running most of my groups this week... Here is a sort video on how to train some simple tricks!
๐ถ Practicing our "stop" cue on a sunny afternoon! (It did take a couple of takes off lead though... ๐)
It's going to be super warm tomorrow โ๏ธ so why not try making some of these healthy doggy ice lollies to help your pet's cope ๐ถ
