“I started taking Darcy to see James to help manage her back pain and lameness. Having regular acupuncture sessions has relieved Darcy’s pain and it has been amazing watching her return to her old ways - enjoying swimming, running with her sister and being a typical spaniel. Darcy no longer requires medication to manage her pain.

James is very knowledgeable, he has been so patient and caring towards Darcy and she enjoys going to her sessions and usually feels relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Thanks to James I’ve got my happy girl back, highly recommended”

Is acupuncture suitable for my pet?

Each individual animal will respond differently to treatments. Many conditions can improve greatly with acupuncture, but there is no guarantee to how much they will improve or what aspects of their condition will get better.

Treatment involves needles, which some pets may not be comfortable with. However with careful management most needle phobic pets begin to tolerate treatment within a few sessions.

Alfie is at the grand old age of 14 years old! He has multiple degenerative joint conditions that cause him pain. He also suffers from some medical issues that mean we have to be careful with pain medication.

Therefore, acupuncture plays a crucial role in his pain management plan. Alfie is doing very well, and has a treatment every 6-8 weeks.

“It’s amazing what they will do for just a treat”
It is phrase that I hear a lot. This morning it was a phrase uttered to me, almost as an insult as my dogs calmly ate treats while his dog tried to cause an altercation.

But if you think about it, it really is AMAZING what our dogs will do for “just a treat” and the truth is that it is so much more than that.

When used effectively that treat can:
✨ Be used as a motivator
✨ Can completely change the way our fearful and reactive dogs perceive the world
✨ Can help to build a relationship between you and your dog.
✨ Can be used to shape a puppy into a confident, well behaved addition to your family.

Paired effectively with proven, ethical, science based training methods that treat really could change your dogs life for the better 🥰

“James has been fantastic with our nervous Springer Spaniel, Bob. He suffers with severe arthritis and has had surgery to repair a ruptured cruciate ligament.

Bob is now on appropriate pain medication and has had his first few acupuncture treatments. We are already starting to see results. Bob is doing well, he is a lot happier and is even enjoying going on his walks! Something he hasn’t done for a while!

We cannot thank James enough for giving us our happy spaniel back”

One very relaxed boy! Stig comes to me every four weeks to help manage his arthritis pain.

Stig’s pain used to cause constipation as he was too uncomfortable to posture - I know it sounds strange but it’s quite a common sign of pain in cats.

Meet Zeus 👋🏻

Zeus found his forever home a few years ago. He had ongoing trouble with back pain so his vet referred him for an MRI that diagnosed intervertebral disc disease.

His pain is now managed with anti inflammatory medication and he has regular acupuncture treatments. I’m pleased to report that he is doing really well!

This is AJ, I have been treating her for 6 months now.

When I first met AJ she was recovering from bumble foot (an infection in her foot) and she also struggles with arthritis in her legs and feet.

It’s been a long journey, but her owner is very committed to her care and we are really seeing the benefits of her treatments.

Hi, I'm James 👋🏻

Born and raised in Bristol; and even attended Bristol University Veterinary School to get my qualification. After graduating in 2014 I was keen to leave the city and explore somewhere new. My first job took me to Oxfordshire, then after a brief return to Bristol for veterinary internship back at the university, I moved to the Midlands and have finally settled in Rugby with my partner Emma and our three dogs, Alfie, Bonnie and Callie.

I work as a first opinion vet at various clinics around the Midlands and run a chronic pain clinic here in Rugby. My love for treating older pets lead me to practice an additional treatment technique, acupuncture. By integrating this with conventional medicine, I can tailor a truly multimodal treatment plan to help manage pain in dogs and cats.

What is acupuncture? 🤓

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves the insertion of a needle through the skin, at specific points on the body to alleviate pain.

JC Veterinary Acupuncture uses Western Acupuncture. This takes a more scientific approach where research has been able to explain why treatment works.

It was really zen in the clinic today🐾😴

Here are some of the super chilled out doggos in the clinic today. Little Oscar (CKCS) even snoozed through all of his big sister’s Pippin (Collie-X) treatment!! Elvis (Border Collie) had his treatment at home and Darcy (spaniel) in the clinic just wanted her belly rubbed.

Don’t worry - the needles are designed to bend and not break so this it totally ok! 😌

Meet sweet little Oscar. He started his acupuncture journey last week and has now had 2 sessions. He is settling in to it really well already but it is too soon to know how well it will work.

Acupuncture can take up to 4-6 treatments before we know if it going to help a patient.

Charlie was back for his treatment again. He had a rough time over Christmas with needing to have surgery but he has recovered so well.

He often sits with his leg out to the side. Does your dog do this? It could be a sign of pain in the knee (stifle). They sit like this to take the pressure off.

Acupuncture may help. But it would be best to speak to your vet first in case anti inflammatories or x-rays are needed.

This is the gorgeous Wally. He is one of the newest patients to the clinic. He’s only a young boy but he sustained an injury in his shoulder leading to some arthritis.

Although arthritis is thought of as a condition of old age it can affect dogs of any age.

We don’t want Wally to have to be in pain killers for the rest of his life so by using holistic treatments like acupuncture he can hopefully have a pain free life without the need for lots of drugs.

This is Stig. He is having treatment because he was struggling with constipation.

Constipation in cats is fairly common. Although there are a few different causes one big overlooked cause is pain.

Thanks to his acupuncture and pain killers he is now off all his laxatives and is much happier - he’s back using the scratching post and scent rubbing.

No one likes to think of their pet as being in pain. But “pain” is such a general term and there are all kinds of pain and different levels.

Acknowledgment that they are not comfortable and getting advice about helping them from your vet will very likely lead to a much better long term, pain free prognosis. 🐾

'He's limping, but he's not in pain!'

This is something we hear, a lot.

And unfortunately it can lead to a huge amount of pets carrying on with chronic pain without the necessary medicinal or multimodal support.

An article by Vet Help Direct helps to explain more about where this confusion stems from:

Limping and stiffness can be caused by several different conditions. The most common being acute injuries and skeletal issues like osteoarthritis (OA). As many as 80% of dogs over 8 years old have OA in one or more joints.

The way that our dogs display pain may not be how we expect; limping usually equals pain or discomfort!

The article covers:

➡️ The difference between acute and chronic pain
➡️ If your pet will ever limp without pain
➡️ Treatment options

Acupuncture has become a huge passion of mine since taking over from Esme. It is such a valuable treatment to help pets suffering from painful conditions.

I will be seeing dogs and cats tomorrow that have arthritis, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and muscular pains.
