I hope everyone’s dogs are coping okay with the fireworks? 🩷

Luckily my three don’t take any notice, but my first dog Buddy had awful issues with sound sensitivity which we later on realised was due to unrecognised chronic pain 😢

Sound sensitivity is often related to other physical health issues or discomfort, it can also be more noticeable in dogs with chronic stress and other anxiety symptoms that affect them in their day to day life

Confidence building, helping with emotional regulation and reducing chronic stress is our favourite topic and there’s so many things we can do to help our dogs feel better 😊

If you need help with improving your dogs confidence and helping them with their emotional state so that they can cope better with novel triggers like fireworks, then it’s definitely worth contacting a qualified professional in dog behaviour and taking a more holistic approach to your dogs mental and physical wellbeing 🐾

My lovely girls both helped with a clients dog today on our local enclosed field

By setting her up to succeed, giving her the space she needed and allowing her to approach my girls in her own time, our clients lovely doggo didn’t bark at all at either of my girls 🐩

They had successful and calm interactions and then we worked on techniques to help introduce friendly and relaxed dogs and encourage healthy interactions. We then learned a training technique to help avoid any stressful, uncomfortable situations with strange dogs

Our work is of course ongoing but progress is fantastic, we will soon be practicing these techniques in real life scenarios on a dog walk. After only three sessions my client already describes her dog as being more relaxed on her walks

So many doggos live with insecurity, lack of confidence and many other difficulties around other dogs, but we shouldn’t just leave them to struggle 💔

Not so long ago we had a lovely little dog come to us for help with her confidence around other dogs, the client had been working with another trainer and her dog had started running away and hiding when she picked up her dogs harness to get ready for a walk 😞

However after a couple of wellness walks here at Ethical Dog, some fun in the forest, a better understanding of body language, a change in lead handling and improving social interactions, we heard that the same little doggo was running TOWARD her harness, all happy and excited to get dressed for her walkies 😍

Obedience and control is often the focus with our dogs in dog training sessions, but here at Ethical Dog we like to share and see how our dogs are really feeling!

It’s always lovely to get feedback from clients but it’s even better when we get feedback from the dogs themselves 🩷🐾🌲

We will reduce frantic activity and movement and try to ensure your dogs are able to enjoy a calm and comfortable walk without any heavy panting, tense body language or rushing around. These take place in a very safe and enclosed private field in Cannock Staffs, so no worries about recall or other dogs or distractions

We can provide scent search games, enriched environment and plenty more sniffy fun to suit your dogs needs

Sniffing and sensory exploration is fantastic for both your dogs mental and physical health and is such a great way of providing a special treat for them 🩷

I will also be available during the session for any questions or concerns about your dogs wellbeing

The field is also suitable for early training sessions with pups for basic training such as learning gentle lead handling and effective communication for building off lead skills or social interaction and play sessions with other dogs 🐾

So proud to announce that beautiful Layla here and her lovely mom are our first partnership with Dog A.I.D. (Assistance In Disability) to have passed their accreditation assessment and have been awarded their certificate for full assistance dog status under the Dog AID programme 😁🐾

These guys have not only worked very hard on their assistance dog skills but also learned all sorts about Laylas needs and welfare, how to read her body language, building up confidence so that Layla can say hello to other dogs on her normal walkies, giving her plenty of free time to be a doggo, and recognising if Layla needs a break or an off day and always putting her needs first 😍

Assistance dog training is a partnership. Yes we teach certain skills and tick the boxes for their exam but more importantly is to have an understanding of how to build a strong and trusted relationship, with effective communication and understanding on both side of the lead and Sharon and Layla managed that so perfectly over the last few months 🩷🐾

On our walkies today we met a lovely lady with her little Jack Russell and her beautiful rescue pondenco who was having her first walkies off of her long line 🩷

My Labrador and poodles enjoyed saying hello and getting fuss and we had such a lovely chat

And then another lovely lady joined us with a big German shepherd 🥰 who also allowed her dog to join in at his own time and pace without any micromanaging and she also came to join us for a chat … half an hour later I couldn’t believe where the time had gone 😅

Socialising, communication, meeting people, making connections, building relationships

It’s so important to both us and the dogs

Were the dogs perfectly obedient… not at all 🤣did they all have an absolutely lovely time learning about each other and practicing their social skills … definitely 😁

We all need less focus on control and more building connection! 🩷

On Sunday we have our monthly group meet for our dogs to interact and play 🐾 and of course for their handlers and families to spend time together

We will be doing our social walk with the doggos on Cannock Chase whilst learning about dog interactions, greetings, and different play styles 🩷

We will be helping to support the dogs in building healthy social relationships aswell as supporting our clients to better understand their dogs communication and body language around other dogs 🐕

Encouraging healthy dog - dog relationships are so important for our dogs and learning about how to read dog body language can really help our clients to feel more comfortable and confident around other dogs 😊

By focusing on providing for our dogs needs and taking care of their emotional state we can ensure that they are feeling calm and comfortable enough within any environment to be able to settle down for a snooze

A lovely relaxed settle like this takes time and patience and is one of the most important skills we work on with our assistance dog teams 🩷

Assistance Dog Training today 🩷🐾 these guys are doing brilliant with lead handling and a lovely relaxed loose lead 😍

Soon we will be practicing a relaxed loose lead in busier environments such as our local dog friendly shopping centre and eventually moving onto public access work in shops and restaurants

Getting these foundational skills right is so important and sets our team up for success 😁

Our assistance dog training sessions are in Cannock, Staffs and also available online £45 per session including training logs, behaviour support and step by step training guides every week 😊

We also have a lovely online supportive friendly community and monthly group meets 🐾

I might be an assistance dog trainer but it’s still ever so daunting starting over training again with a new dog for my own needs. My little rescue girl started accompanying me to work with clients earlier in the year and she started learning skills and tasks to help me teach clients … and then she just fell into her new role of training to help me with my disability very naturally 🥰 her temperament is incredible and with patience, kindness and trust we have been able to work together really well and she is progressing absolutely brilliantly. We have spent many months training in mostly dog friendly venues and for very short periods but today she went to her first theme park 😊 she was engaged and interested but still calm and steady and relaxed and she strutted around tail up and confident and as always enjoyed observing everything around her from my lap 😁 we also did a few training skills including walking next to my wheelchair, settling on her mat and stays and a bit of taskwork too (and an unplanned medical alert on the way home!) but luckily for her our local theme park is 90% beautiful forest, lake, and stunning gardens 😍 so she had lots of lovely breaks sniffing around quiet areas, exploring the forest and gardens and snoozing on the grass in the sunshine! ☀️ we only stayed for a couple of hours due to my own medical issues but she was fast asleep on the way home. It was definitely a big success and a confidence boost for me too! My little scraggy rescue girl all grown up and helping me to safely access different places 🩷

1-1 walkies with my girls today 🥰 we usually take all three of our dogs together but it’s great to have individual walks so that I can tailor their walk based on their individual needs

This little one is Happy, she is our little pocket rocket 🚀 as she absolutely loves to run and play games 😁🐩 I can hide a toy half a field away and she would run back and track the scent and search for it and then come flying back in record time 😍

Scent searching is a brilliant way to encourage your dogs natural behaviours, fulfilling both their physical and mental needs and improving your relationship playing together, it’s also a fab way of tiring them out using a safe and healthy activity that doesn’t compromise their physical health

Our assistance dog sessions have been very busy this week, and the dogs have been absolutely fantastic (and their lovely handlers of course)

Here are two of our teams practicing a lovely calm settle in the library, I love working in the library as it really encourages our handlers to be quiet and calm and gentle

We very much teach that less is more when it comes to cues, our approach is based on fulfilling needs until the dogs are feeling relaxed and comfortable enough to just follow along with us and enjoy a nice chill in a quiet environment

And these guys all did brilliant this week 🥹❤️ so proud of their progress!

Amazing session with these two today, focusing on some basics, and learning proper lead handling skills 😁👌🏼

We played some games on the park with lots of sniffing and free time and then on the way home we did an amazing relaxed smiley lead walk, in a safe position next to the wheelchair 🦽

Relaxed lead walking and walking in a safe position is very important as Oscar is training to become an assistance dog 🐾 he already does so many fantastic tasks to help his owner but they just needed a bit of help with staying focused and calm so that we can work towards training in none pet friendly environments 😊

We are celebrating National Assistance Dog week with another one of our amazing assistance dog teams managing to ace all of their skills ready for their accreditation exam with Dog AID 😁

We will be continuing to practice all of these skills and do different mock assessments in a few different environments, with different sights/sounds/flooring and novel distractions over the next few weeks

Until our doggos and handlers feel confident and comfortable enough to be put forward for their final exam with another assessor 🤞🏼🩷

Our disability assistance dog training sessions based on The Ethical Approach are available at £45 per session and include training log and written step by step instructions based on your needs 😍 we work in and around Cannock Chase, Staffordshire and offer online 1-1 appointments by video call

Lovely Oscar and his family enjoyed a short wellbeing walk with us today, getting out and about in nature, encouraging the dogs natural behaviours and freedom and fun

We started with long lead handling skills, then the dogs enjoyed some free play and continued their sniffing and exploring

And then at the end of the session we did ten minutes training and Oscar managed beautiful wheelchair walking, managing to keep his position next to the wheelchair adjusting with turns and keeping his lead loose whilst trotting alongside his mom without any tension on the lead 🩷

By practicing these skills we are making sure to take care of Oscar’s physical health and his mental wellbeing too, making sure he is in a better position to be successful in his assistance dog training 🥰

We had such a great training session in the shops today with my youngest pup, and we had the most lovely slow, calm and relaxed loose lead walking inside the shops right by my side and automatically adjusting next to my wheelchair in the narrow aisle and with some tight turns 🩷

But of course this was only after a lovely free run, sniff and explore, meeting and greeting with other dogs, getting out all of her sniffs and encouraging lots of natural dog behaviour first 🌲

We can’t expect our assistance dogs to cope with ignoring the world and not using their nose, unless we have already given plenty of opportunities in a safe environment before entering a none pet friendly venue 🐾

Dog first, needs first, wellness first, welfare first

… And then we train 🥰

Freedom, choice and exploration 😍👌🏼 and three happy dogs!

We need to stop focusing on constant control and commands and give our dogs enough time to think and feel and process the beautiful world around them in the way that they know best 🌲

This not only helps their physical and mental wellbeing but can also improve confidence, independence and trust 🐾

Take a step back, find the right environment and go enjoy some quiet free time with your dog, without the pressure of training, your dog will thank you for it 🥰

Thankyou to one of our lovely Dog A.I.D assistance dog clients clients for taking a photo of my little Nuggie poodle having a sniff and explore at the nature reserve 🪿

The geese are so lovely and placid and used to pet dogs and humans walking by every single day, we can also buy food to feed them here so they don’t panic at all and instead they quite like following us around 🤣

Its a fantastic place to have a lovely long lead sniffy walk with our assistance dogs in training to get them used to the birds and learning how to be calm and polite around other animals 🩷🐾

Two very good girls settled down quietly under the table together whilst we enjoyed a lovely lunch today 🐩🩷 they even stay settled (with some extra tail wags) when the food arrived and with other dogs at the tables next to us

Dog friendly restaurants are a great way to start your assistance dog training

We always make sure our dogs can easily manage to settle and feel comfortable and relaxed in this environment before we take them out to any none pet friendly places 🐾

Our online assistance dog training program starts on Thursday for clients who are unable to travel to us. We have a waitlist and a lovely supportive small online learning group 😁 let me know if you would like to join

They’ve been on the same walkies in the same place all off lead and we have two clean, dry doggos … and one muddy one 🤣

It’s always little Happy poodle that’s straight in the puddles! She absolutely loves water and mud and splashing around and it is very much encouraged by us 🩷

We had a fantastic assistance dog session at our local pet friendly shopping centre today here in Cannock, Staffordshire 🐾

The dogs all enjoyed a relaxing sniffy walk on their long leads to start with, then we met at the cafe for some food refusal training activities which they all did brilliant with 😊

We did some work in and out of the shops and came across all sorts of different distractions that the dogs were able to confidently and calmly observe and cope with perfectly

And then we finished with a playful taskwork session at guest services in which our dogs managed to transfer from grabbing our handheld training cord, to pulling the real emergency cord in the disabled toilets 🩷 a very important task for those of us with physical disability at risk of falls

A couple of our brilliant Dog A.I.D. partnerships are very close to their accreditation assessment now! We are just supporting our handlers in accessing a few different environments and practicing real life skills to prepare both dogs and handlers and help to build their confidence in real life situations before their final exam 🐾

This lads favourite thing in the world is to snuffle around in the forest, find the bestest stink … and then take it home for later 🤣😂 Our dogs noses are so incredibly powerful, they explore their world through scent and can find out valuable information about other dogs and animals and all sorts of things when they stop to sniff Often we try to hurry them on, but our dogs walks should be the time where they get to explore and enjoy the outdoors and be themselves 💕 Let your dogs sniff! Another beautiful early morning in the sunshine in the beautiful UK heatwave 🌞🥰 We are lucky enough to live right next to the forest where it’s lovely and cool under the large trees 🌲 so we went for a short sniffy play session this morning. Playtime in the garden, or just a rest day in the house is absolutely fine too 🌷🏡 Try not to judge too quickly if you do see someone outside walking their dog, as some of them might just be taking a quick toilet trip, as not everyone has a garden space for the dogs toilet 🐾 If you do manage to get out to a safer environment try to just let them sniff and explore small areas instead of walking or running about. Today we did an on lead treat hunt in the grass instead of going for a walkies and the dogs really enjoyed sniffing and searching 💕 you can set this up in the garden too, lots of dogs love sniffing out a few treats 🌿 Jodie www.FindingHappiness.co.uk
