There is a myth that sighthounds and lurchers are so independent they cannot be trained. Let's see how true that is! #sighthoundsofinstagram #sighthounds #sighthoundsofinsta #sighthoundsoftheworld #dogtraining #dogtrainingtips
4 tips to a great dog training session.
Crate Training
1. Set up your crate in a corner of a part of the house which isnโt isolated but not over the top busy. Cover ยพ of the crate with some kind of blanket, at night cover the crate completely except for the door side. Make it really comfortable and inviting inside, a soft dog bed and a couple of safe puppy toys (avoid long toys that could get wrapped around the puppyโs neck) available in the crate too. Always leave the door open.
2. Make the crate the only comfortable space available to the pup to rest in, take up any additional dog beds to start with, once he is happy in his crate you can then also put down other dog beds but I would expect his crate to be his favourite place. Feed your pup in his crate. The idea is to make the crate the greatest place to be, ever!
3. When your pup takes himself into the crate to rest or play, drop some treats through the top of the crate, donโt say anything, just drop the treats as you walk by. The pup will love his crate even more, not only is it a cosy den but treats rain down when you are in it too!
4. Remember that your puppy does not know what is happening to him, he is in a new place with new people without his mum or siblings and doesnโt understand the language, a very scary time. You should never leave your puppy to cry and with this in mind and not wanting to sour the crate experience by shutting the door, I take the pup up to bed for the first few nights. Also useful for starting house training, you will wake when the pup starts to move around because he needs to toilet, pick up the pup and get him outside as quickly as possible โ puppies only have small bladders, time is of the essence.
5. After a few nights when I feel the pup is settling, I will stay up until the pup has settled and gone to sleep in his crate (choose a night when you donโt have to be bright as a button the following day). I will quietly shut the door for the first time and wait for about 20 minutes with the room
After my post of yesterday talking about whether we acknowledged our dogs enough when they are doing something right, I have made this video just for you. ๐
Let me know how you get on in the comments
Holly tells me her International Dog Day has been ruined. A hail stone bounced on her in the boot room. That is a typical saluki look of disgust.
Training Games Medley
A medley of training games.
1. Boundary games - building value in staying on their beds
2. Airplane - Bella only gets the food when she doesn't try to snatch it.
3. Cone game - a prelude to muzzle training, the muzzle comes later as it is a smaller target.
4. Mouse game - Holly knows this game but you would start with caging the food with your hand, lifting your hand and rewarding when your dog looks away from the food.
Please feel free to contact my via DM if you need my help with any of your dog struggles.
Do you have a dog that grabs rewards from your hand? Do you sometimes feel like you might lose your fingers? ๐ฑ
Offering the reward from above the dog's nose will encourage them to come up to meet your hand and snatch. Try offering your treat to your dog from his chest height, move your hand very slowly upwards and towards your dog's mouth. Try the aeroplane game. Offer your dog a reward and if they snatch towards your hand, pull your hand back and try again, if they go to snatch, again take your hand away. Give your dog the reward when they stop snatching. The faster you offer the reward the more likely you are to up your dog's energy so offering the reward calmly and slowly will reduce the your dog's energy.
Here is a little video to show you how to do this.
Its that Friday feeling, for me it should have meant Crufts today but we got snowed. We had fun anyway. Tell me what you are doing this weekend?
Ollie's first go at working on his topline on platforms. This is an example of train the dog in front of you. You will notice that he started having a better shape when I stood up rather than kneeling down because he is a tall dog and I got better mechanics standing, with a smaller dog I would have remained kneeling.
A bit of snow madness this morning.
I thought it would be fun and useful for me to show you a few games to keep your dog close to you off lead. We teach our dogs to stay in our proximity by being the best fun and showing them there is value is staying close by.
The Proximity Vortex is a great training game for this. You need some low value food, some high value food and your dog.
Start by playing in the house, then into the garden, then to places with a little more distraction and upping the distractions as they start to get and understand the message in each place. If your dog isn't yet trusted off lead, then keep him on lead or use a long line when you get outside your garden.
Over the next few days, I will be showing you a few more proximity games which will also help with other concepts.
Proximity Vortex teaches the following concepts: proximity, confidence, focus and optimism.
Please message me through this page or call me on 017917 203 168, I would be happy to chat and help you with any struggles you and your dog might be having.
Ollie takes a dive
We all know its best to make sure our pups get only positive experiences, sadly this doesn't always happen.
Ollie pup missed the edge of the pond when taking a drink and took a bit of a dip. Consequently, at the age of 4 he won't go anywhere near water now, not even if its very hot.
The weather has been horrible so we did some inside training.
Multi dog boundaries, some aeroplane with Bella, the cone game with Angus and the mouse game with Hollie. Ollie had the most difficult job of staying on his boundary while everyone around him got to play games. They were all stars.

Hounds enjoying the snow in our field this morning. #lurchersofinstagram #lurchers #dogsofinstagram #snowlurchers #snowlurchersofinstagtam #snowlurcher
The Fireworks season is upon us shortly.
Having had 2 lurchers that went into complete meltdown when they started I really feel for everyone out there whose dogs get so traumatised by the loud bangs and fizzes.
Its is important to remember that dogs do not need to go for a walk every day especially when it is not in their best interests. We take our dogs for walks because they enjoy it and so do we.
However, dogs get a lot of stimulation from walks, many different events that happen while they are out will cause their โbucketsโ to fill.
When you dog is frightened and worried about where the next scary bang will be, going on walks will not be in their best interest. It will be much better for your dog to stay home and enjoy calm activities.
Fireworks cause their buckets to overflow when they are frightened which in turn causes the hormone cortisol to rise which in turn intensifies their reaction to further loud noises and frights such as loud bangs. As we know, fireworks can go on for a 2-3 weeks around this time of year and you never know quite when they are going to happen.
My advice is to keep everything calm leading up to the season, a calm dog is less likely to react than a dog whose bucket is already filling. Ditch the walks until the season is over.
Use your dogโs food allowance throughout the day and ditch the bowl. Chewing, licking and sniffing are all calming activities for dogs as well as, of course, sleeping and rest. You can scatter feed on the floor, use a snuffle mat or stuff a hoof, kong or topple, you can spread food on a textured mat so your dog has to lick it all off. Use your imagination for different ways you can deliver your dogโs food. Variety is the spice of life. Please ensure that they are supervised especially when using snuffle mats or other items they could ingest.
If you know when fireworks are going to take place then you can prepare your dogs, if you donโt, then you can take the following action immediately
