Update on Eric - 20/05/24:

Well, my boy is ok at the moment but down to 26.1kg and bowel movements are not as normal as pre illness. Weight is not recovered so something still lurking.

I have agreed to monitor his temp and if it goes over 38.2C , i will take him straight in, sedate him and do a full scan plus chest X-Rays and see what we can find.

If there are tumours then we will go the steroid route which may shrink or contain them but of course impact on the immune system.

At leadt we now have a strategy! I have a quite for the scan and XRays of £350 plus any medication prescribed. Better than the first event when I nearly lost him which was £1500 and his second wad £350 for meds and X Rays etc but didn’t stay overnight.

I hope my running commentary helps other hound owners going through similar issue.

Happy birthday to Bubbles, last of the pack to reach 11 years of age.

Gorgeous girl who is strickly non confrontational (besidrs cats, rats, mice and Bunnies), ignores barking or lunging dogs, likes babies and children, quirky and follows lines on the footpath made by roadworks and always reminds me if I am late with her scheduled events. A girl of precisely timed routine.

Our little Bubs, friends with everyone whonstill loves all things edible.

Have a wonderful day and wish you many more years with us..

Missy Maggie always watches me washing uo and sorting out the kitchen after the 5am garden break followed by three dried fish each.
She gives little whimpers of starvation.. Eric then uses her bed so he can keep watch from behind the dining room table. Bubbles remains confident that food will be served just after 6am 🐶❤️

Eric’s update 11/04/24:

Well i have delayed this post so that I can see what is happening and so far ‘nothing’. He completed his antibiotics and other meds, swelling gone in his tummy and ribd nonlonger distended, no trembling and back to normal eating with body functions working.

I asked the vet if they need to see him and they said ‘no’. So we think it was a large mass or two of infected fluid that wasn’t caused by a tumour (thank goodness). The masses have gone so advised just to monitor and take him back if anything looks wrong.

Possible cause, inhaling a grass seed …

Anyway my lovely Eric is back to normal and putting a little weight back on 🐶❤️

Eric's Update 24/03/24:

He has 10 more days of antibiotics after which I shall take him back to the vets and see if they can determine what these masses in his tummy and chest are.

He is continuing to improve day by day, sleeping on his chair most of the time but lots of positive development;
1. Goes for a walk most days and has significantly increased his distance and today di the same walk as the other two normally do... just slowly, particularly up hill.
2. Temp is staying stable so implies that infection is down
3. Chest still a bit wheezy but no where near as noisy as when he was in hospital. Then is sounded like a washing machine and drowned out the sound of his wea heart. Now heart can be heard with ones ear!
4. Eating around 500g of tripe, mince and veg twice a day with a vitamin supplement.
5. Toilet functions about normal
6. He can bark for his food again... missed that.

Thank you for everyone holding his welfare in your minds and wishing him well.

Eric’s Update - 15/03/24:

I feel that Eric has stabilised and as well as Zi can expect due to his ‘masses’ in his abdomen.

He has progressed to do s very short walk outside the property, mastered the stairs so back on the landing to sleep, climbs onto his chair during the day for a while but does need to stretch out at times.

He is uncomfortable and lacking energy but dies not appear to be in pain and his mind is sharp and facial responses good.

Sadly he is losing weight but enjoys the extra food …

I must now containg his infections and then see if the vet can determine what the masses are and can we shrink them. Healthwise and age exclude the option of surgery.

Thank you to everyone who has enquiried after his health and progress.. ❤️🐶

Eric’s Update 11/03/24:

Yesterday his temperaturewent up to 39.5 but is back down to 38.5 this morning.

He is still eating well and i am just cooking his a venison offal stew for tomorrow. He has lost a lot of weight so giving plenty of treats and he demolished a dried venison oesophagus.

Struggles to get up but improving so major problem is this mass affecting his breathing but at least short term he is a happier boy.

Thank you to my lovely friends who enquire after his welfare and follow his progress ❤️

I found an open wound on the top of his next, looked like a rat bite but probably where he has had so many injections. I have put some antiseptic on and will monitor it.

At least his feet now look like a greyhojbds and not fat like some other breeds. I kept thinkjng ‘those are not Erics feet’ 😄😄😳

Eric’s Update 09/03/24:

More progress today but still a long journey to follow… Eric is more alert and I have stopped his pain meds to see how he copes. The two tyoes of antibiotics are the critical ones along with getting him to eat and drink plenty.

Progress is;
1. Temperature down to 38.5 .. one degree drop.
2. Eaten two 300g meals and one of 100+g. They are raw green tripe and cooked veggies.
3. This afternoon he joined the girks at their tables in the conservatory for dinner. First time since he came home.
4. Tummy working fine and urine getting lighter in colour by the day.
5. Accepted his dried spratts this morning as a first this week.. another sign of normality.
6. Swollen feet are getting back to normal.
7. Very red bruised looking innner legs toning down.

Not ready for a walk out of our garden but happy to walk around the back and front.

Getting his tablets down now that he is less fragile. Mind you giving cheese after he swallows one may be having a positive influence.

Update 8th March:
Eric went to vet to have cannula removed and a basic progress check. Overall they are very happy with progress.

He is still very dehydrated based on his kidney function and urine colour but it is improving. They supplied a bottle of Oralade to help but he wont drink it, but Maggie will!

His legs looked very bruised and his feet swollen so I am walking him a lot as I think he has fluid retention. So far I see a little improvement in this area.

I have got him eating without using a syringe to put it in his mouth but he is very selective about when and what he will eat. Seemed to have a problem chewing but i think this was three days of relative inactivity and little foos as he has lost a lot if body mass.

The chest mass is causing problems breathing at times and he gets a little wirried so needs calming.

A real challenge to get him to take his medicine and takes up to lunch time for the morning batch. May have to bin the meds and take him to vet each day for injections. I will persevere a bit longer and stop his one pain med that tastes awful that makes him fit .. shaking head wildly..

Tummy is working ok and digesting despite the mass in his tummy but thst is the lower priority. The chest mass infection is our first line of attack.

Thank everyone who enquires about him and sends their love and best wishes, sorry that i have little free tine with hounds and domestic duties so cant always respond quickly.. xx

Eric came home yesterday just after 5pm. Had to be lifted out of the car although he really wanted to jump out.
Once inside he lay on two duvets and tried to eat some yucky food that the vet supplied. Refused to take his tablets until they were ground to dust and mixed with Marmite so had them all last night. Had a smacko and staggered out for a wee with dad lifting him as too weak to stand. Went to bed and slept 11pm to 4:30 when dad went to check on him.
This morning tablets all taken and had two ramekins about quarter full of raw meat and cooked veg mashed up. Had several good drinks of water.
Spoken to vets and they are happy with my progress but woukd like him back tomorrow to remove the cannula.
First step is to clear the infection around a mass in his chest.. hopefully he can hokf on while we work on this.

Dad says; Massive thank you to my friends with the suggestions on care and general emotional support at this difficult time.
