Male mice🐭
We’ve recently successfully bonded all 6 of our male mice although it’s now proving quite a challenge to get a video of them all together! They are so nosey!
These boys are all around 8 months old and all spend most of their time burrowing or tucking into some forage.🍂
Eva has been very busy this morning! Millet sprays and forage are a fantastic way of encouraging natural behaviours.🐹
It’s been a year in the making but today was a very exciting day!
The 4 chinchillas and female group of rats have finally entered their new and improved enclosures! There are a few more enrichment items to add but we will give them time to settle in first.
All 7 have been exploring and we cannot wait to see how they flourish now that they’ve got so much more space.🐹🐭
2023 recap
As this year draws to a close let’s reflect on what’s happened in the rescue in 2023!
~ We’ve taken in 43 small furries ranging from mice, rats, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and a very special hedgehog.
~ We’ve raised about £500 for the animals in our care through different fundraising events.
~ We’ve advised new owners on the correct care for pets.
~ We’ve educated students how to provide the best care to rodents and shown them how a rescue works.
~ We have unfortunately said goodbye to a few of our biggest characters including Jerry, Midnight, Harry, and Simba.
~ We’ve celebrated being up and running for 3 years and will hopefully be here for many, many more!
There are some exciting things happening in the rescue and we are so grateful for all of the ongoing support we are receiving. A huge proportion of the animals we take in are in their senior years and although we may not have some of them for long, we feel honoured that owners trust us to provide that extra care in their time of need.
From the bottom of all of our hearts,
Thank you🧡🐹🐀🦔🐾
Pomegranate
Pomegranate recently got given this snuffle mat. It has provided her with some great enrichment! She doesn’t normally eat when there’s people around but there’s nothing stopping her now!🦔
Richie is a Roborovski dwarf hamster who arrived here in January this year.
Hamsters can run up to 5 miles on their wheel in one night. This is why it is vital that a wheel of the correct size is provided to prevent any injury to their delicate spines.
If Richie isn’t burrowed in his bed then he will either be sitting in his food bowl or running at full speed. Look at this guy go!🐹
We’ve had a bit of a move around ready for lambing weekend!
Recently we have made the decision to move our small rodents (mice, hamsters and gerbils) off the main zoo so only our large rodents will be visible for the public to see along with the rest of our Habitat animals🐹🐭
We will have a stall to try and fundraise for our new chinchilla enclosures so feel free to come and say hello!
Last Thursday marked 2 years since Pepper arrived!
To mark that special occasion, we thought you’d like to see a super cute video of her drinking today!🦔
Maud and Mildred were SO ready for their breakfast yesterday morning!🤣
So many excited squeaks🐹
Today marks the 2 year anniversary since Oaklands Rodent Rescue opened. It started off in an old feed storage container we had but has since doubled in size and has recently moved into the main Habitat building.
We’ve provided a safe home for over 90 animals in these 2 years. Young, old, healthy or unhealthy. If there’s space, we work our absolute hardest to ensure that each animal gets the best out of life.
This has been a great learning space for students that want to go into rescuing as they get to see behind the scenes, they get to help with routine treatments, weekly health checks/weighing and the daily feeding/cleaning of each animal.
It’s certainly been hard work but it’s also been so rewarding! Here’s to many more years of helping those in need🐭🐹🦔.
The rats have been busy pea fishing this week!!
Pea fishing is a great way to keep the rats cool in these high temperatures and is also a great way of proving enrichment!
We’ve got 11 rats here all over the age of 2 and this heat is not something that they are enjoying! We would love to hear about the ways you’ve been keeping your small furries cool☀️
The award for the nosiest eater goes too.... Pepper!🦔🤣
