This is what a day in the rescue looks like!🐹
A small rodent rescue based in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
This is what a day in the rescue looks like!🐹
Everyone here would like to wish you all a Happy Easter. We hope you’re enjoying the long weekend!🐰🐹🐣
Nedd would also like to thank everyone who turned up to support us at our fundraising event last weekend at Lambing Weekend.
For those who have previously asked, if you would like to donate to our fundraiser then follow the link below, we would be very very grateful!🐹

It was an exciting day today for some of the guinea pigs!
Last week we had to say goodbye to one of our older boys, Stanley, leaving Steve alone. As Steve has been castrated he has been bonded with Tinks and Belle!
At the moment they are getting on really well, sharing vegetables and hides. Hopefully they’ll have many years together🐹
Connie approves of the enrichment item that our volunteers made for her a few days ago!
We are OPEN this weekend 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday so you’ll be able to see all of the animals here in the rescue alongside the zoo and farm🐭🐹
Tickets can be ordered from
https://www.oaklands.ac.uk/lambing/
This time next week we will be half way through our first day of fundraising!
We will be there raising vital funds for the animals in our care. These funds will go towards veterinary care, food, enrichment, enclosures and anything else.
Ed and Nedd have been helping us name all of the teddies for the teddy tombola, we are looking forward to seeing everyone and showing people the rescue and all of the other animals! 🐹🐭

Yesterday we had a very exciting arrival in the shape of Himalayan guinea pigs, Petra and Gretal🤍🖤
These two lovely ladies arrived from Blue Cross UK and once they’ve settled in, they’ll be joining our big herd Cavy Lodge🐹
We cannot wait to see how their personalities shine through!
Just a few of the many guinea pig photos that have been taken over the last couple of weeks!
We have 2 outdoor herds and then 7 indoor guinea pigs. One thing for certain is that it gets very noisy at feeding time🤣🐹
There’s nothing we appreciate more than when animals co-operate with us on weighing day!
Oakley sits like this everytime he goes onto the scales which allows us to thoroughly health check him at the same time.
Every animal here is weighed once a week. Due to being prey animals, rodents are known for hiding any signs of illness. Often until it’s too late so it’s vital that we notice any slight changes in their weight.🐹🐭🦔🐀🐁
We’ve recently successfully bonded all 6 of our male mice although it’s now proving quite a challenge to get a video of them all together! They are so nosey!
These boys are all around 8 months old and all spend most of their time burrowing or tucking into some forage.🍂
It’s a hard life being the eldest degu!
Ralph spends his time snoozing in his favourite whale hammock, making newspaper nests or trying to convince people he hasn’t been fed for days!🐹

Thought it was about time we talked a bit about what we do!
In September 2020 we started up as a rescue to allow students to experience another animal environment. We started off with 4 guinea pigs but soon that number grew!
Currently we have 4 chinchillas, 28 guinea pigs, 4 gerbils, 7 degus, 7 mice, 7 rats, 5 hamsters and 1 very special hedgehog.
Any animal that comes here stays for their whole life where we carry out weekly weighing & health checking. Feeding and spot cleans are done daily during the students practical sessions.
During these last few years, we’ve provided a home for approximately 150 small rodents some have been elderly, some have had health issues but all have been cared for round the clock!
Thank you for all of your ongoing support, it never goes unnoticed🐹🐭🦔
A huge thank you to those who have purchased items from the wish list, the animals have been spoiled!
Here’s some photos of our eldest degu, Ralph, enjoying a glove box full of forage.
He has been told he has to share the monkey nuts though🤣
Want to help the animals but don’t know how? Below are a few options which would all really benefit the animals currently in the rescue!
- We are currently looking for any teddies/soft toys to use as part of a teddy tombola at our next fundraising event (23rd&24th March).
- Our Amazon wish list is regularly being updated.

- We are always on the look out for newspapers and shredded paper.
- Interacting with our posts and leaving reviews has a much bigger impact than people realise!
We are all so grateful for your ongoing support🐹🦔🐭
Today it was time to pamper Pomegranate! She had her nails clipped and her feet bathed.
Pomegranate is known for being quite a messy girl and gets this treatment about once a month to clean her feet after spending lots of time on her wheel! She completely relaxes when she is in the warm water🦔
It’s been a year in the making but today was a very exciting day!
The 4 chinchillas and female group of rats have finally entered their new and improved enclosures! There are a few more enrichment items to add but we will give them time to settle in first.
All 7 have been exploring and we cannot wait to see how they flourish now that they’ve got so much more space.🐹🐭
As this year draws to a close let’s reflect on what’s happened in the rescue in 2023!
~ We’ve taken in 43 small furries ranging from mice, rats, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters and a very special hedgehog.
~ We’ve raised about £500 for the animals in our care through different fundraising events.
~ We’ve advised new owners on the correct care for pets.
~ We’ve educated students how to provide the best care to rodents and shown them how a rescue works.
~ We have unfortunately said goodbye to a few of our biggest characters including Jerry, Midnight, Harry, and Simba.
~ We’ve celebrated being up and running for 3 years and will hopefully be here for many, many more!
There are some exciting things happening in the rescue and we are so grateful for all of the ongoing support we are receiving. A huge proportion of the animals we take in are in their senior years and although we may not have some of them for long, we feel honoured that owners trust us to provide that extra care in their time of need.
From the bottom of all of our hearts,
Thank you🧡🐹🐀🦔🐾
We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas from all of us here at Oaklands Rodent Rescue!☃️🎄🎅🏻❄️

This year we are collecting donations to help the hedgehogs at The Haven Wildlife Rescue 🦔🦔
The list below will provide much needed items to lots of hedgehogs and wildlife in need at this time of year.
We are really grateful for any donations for this fantastic cause!🦔
It’s been an extremely busy time in the rescue! Last week we took in 15 new arrivals and we cannot wait to see how they settle into life here🐹🐭
Guinea pigs; Heather, Rhodi, Dahlia, Marigold.
Hamsters; Ross and Chandler.
Gerbils; Pinky and Perky.
Mice; Marzipan, Mickey, Milo, Morris, Murphy, Malcolm and Morgan.
It’s a very special day today!
3 years ago Maple and Midnight entered the rescue and have been squeaking for veggies daily ever since!
Before they came to us, they hadn’t been handled for about 4 years but after a short time here they had adjusted really well and this summer, we decided it’s time for them to live out their retirement in peace! They still love being spoiled rotten in the rescue, only coming out with staff and although they may be older ladies, they still make sure we know who is boss!
Happy Gotcha Day girls!🐹
A selection of Walnut photos from the last few weeks because who could resist that little face?!😍🐹
We are in desperate need of any towels and fleece blankets if anyone is getting rid of any, please consider donating to us!
We’ve recently had a few medical concerns with one of our boys, Harry meaning he is now on fleece long term alongside the skinny pigs and hedgehog.
Thank you so much🐹🦔😊
Pomegranate recently got given this snuffle mat. It has provided her with some great enrichment! She doesn’t normally eat when there’s people around but there’s nothing stopping her now!🦔
Exactly 2 years ago a book about a very special skinny pig, Dixon, was published. This book was designed to help people come to terms with the grief left when their pets pass on.
The proceeds of this book are split between Oaklands Rodent Rescue and Gertie’s Lonely Guinea Pig Rescue.
If anyone would like to purchase this book, we would all be very grateful!🐹

Happy Halloween🎃🦇👻
What life has been like in the rescue this week!🐹🐭
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry.
Jerry arrived in the rescue last year as an old boy and captured the hearts of staff and students from the very first day. He was always greeting us for a ‘nose boop’ and adored his companion, Oreo.
Being an older boy, he had quite a few medical problems including some issues with his thyroid. A few months ago, he went to temporarily live with one of the technicians to see if a home environment would help him put some weight back on. He was thriving until last weekend when he went down hill and unfortunately lost his battle last night.
Jerry had such a passion for life and as long as he had treats and Oreo, he was happy🧡
He will never, ever be forgotten🐹
Today is a very exciting day! 1 year ago we welcomed these two girls in. They’ve come on leaps and bounds since they arrived and have us wrapped around their paws!
Not only have they changed our lives, they’ve also changed Harry’s. He spends everyday being a nosey neighbour and loves nothing more than sitting on his box, spying on the girls🤣
Life in the rescue would certainly be very quiet without Tinks and Belle!🐹🩷

Eva has been very busy this morning! Millet sprays and forage are a fantastic way of encouraging natural behaviours.🐹

Richie is a Roborovski dwarf hamster who arrived here in January this year. Hamsters can run up to 5 miles on their wheel in one night. This is why it is vital that a wheel of the correct size is provided to prevent any injury to their delicate spines. If Richie isn’t burrowed in his bed then he will either be sitting in his food bowl or running at full speed. Look at this guy go!🐹
We’ve had a bit of a move around ready for lambing weekend! Recently we have made the decision to move our small rodents (mice, hamsters and gerbils) off the main zoo so only our large rodents will be visible for the public to see along with the rest of our Habitat animals🐹🐭 We will have a stall to try and fundraise for our new chinchilla enclosures so feel free to come and say hello!
Last Thursday marked 2 years since Pepper arrived! To mark that special occasion, we thought you’d like to see a super cute video of her drinking today!🦔
Today marks the 2 year anniversary since Oaklands Rodent Rescue opened. It started off in an old feed storage container we had but has since doubled in size and has recently moved into the main Habitat building. We’ve provided a safe home for over 90 animals in these 2 years. Young, old, healthy or unhealthy. If there’s space, we work our absolute hardest to ensure that each animal gets the best out of life. This has been a great learning space for students that want to go into rescuing as they get to see behind the scenes, they get to help with routine treatments, weekly health checks/weighing and the daily feeding/cleaning of each animal. It’s certainly been hard work but it’s also been so rewarding! Here’s to many more years of helping those in need🐭🐹🦔.
The rats have been busy pea fishing this week!! Pea fishing is a great way to keep the rats cool in these high temperatures and is also a great way of proving enrichment! We’ve got 11 rats here all over the age of 2 and this heat is not something that they are enjoying! We would love to hear about the ways you’ve been keeping your small furries cool☀️
