Dexter is a 6-month-old, VERY bouncy Labrador. His owner came to me to help her teach him some basic life skills and manners.
I like to start nice and simple to create a solid foundation from which to progress. In session one, amongst other things, we worked on introducing markers and the concept of luring (see video in comments). If you’re not sure what these are and why we need to teach them, then drop me a DM and I’ll be happy to provide some info.
With young children at home, fitting training into the day was a concern for Dexter’s owner, but here is evidence of what you can achieve in short 1-minute bursts of training whenever you get a spare minute throughout the day 💁🏼♀️
I’m excited to see where this team ends up in a couple of months’ time!

Little Rosie has completed week 1 of my Puppy Power course and is learning that focussing on her human is a good thing. Look at her go! 👏
Focus is one of the first things I teach. If your dog can’t focus on you then they aren’t going to be able to listen to your instructions and ultimately won’t be able to have off lead freedom further down the line. Starting to grow this skill from a young age is the best way to make speedy progress with your training and start enjoying a stress-free life with your dog 😍
If you’d like to sign up to my 4-week at home Puppy Power course then DM me for details!
Scatter feeding is the easiest enrichment activity you can give your dog! Simply scatter their food around the garden and cue them to “Find it!”, then watch as their nose springs into action. Start in a small area so it’s nice and easy for them and then gradually increase the size you’re scattering in. Why not try switching out your dog’s breakfast bowl for a breakfast scatter? #canineenrichment #dogenrichment
The Emergency Stop
I’ve spent the past couple of days training with 6 working cocker spaniels and I feel like I’ve never worked so hard in my life 😅 Busy little things aren’t they!
Teaching your dog to stay on a boundary (or the Place command as some call it) can be helpful for many reasons. I think my favourite uses for it are for when you’re eating out somewhere and you’d like your dog to stay calmly in one place, and for training multiple dogs at the same time (one stays on a boundary whilst the other does some sort of activity with you and then you swap over). What do you use boundary training for with your dog? Let me know in the comments!

People say you should give your dog a job (I don’t necessarily agree with this), well this morning Bodhi’s job was to deliver my birthday cards all the way from the kitchen. He aced it! But he was way too proud of himself and couldn’t quite disengage from the cards at the end 😂 We haven’t worked on a retrieve so I don’t mind this at all. You’ve got to have realistic expectations and my expectations here were for Bodhi to be cute 😃 10/10 for him!
It’s Foodie Friday 🎊
Let’s talk about strawberries 🍓
Strawberries contain an anti-ageing compound called ‘fisetin’ which has long been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Fisetin helps slow down the effects of ageing by killing senescent cells - cells which have lost their ability to divide but do not die and so build up and inflame surrounding cells. One study found that mice exposed to fisetin lived 10% longer and experienced fewer age-related issues than the control group.
If by adding strawberries in to your dog’s diet you could help slow down the effects of ageing, why wouldn’t you? Plus, they definitely can’t eat the whole punnet by themselves so you’ll be forced to help them out!
Please note, the green leafy part of a strawberry can cause stomach upset so be sure to remove that part before feeding it to your dog.

Our dogs pulling on lead can be a source of great frustration. I used to get such a sore back when walking my young and full of life German Shepherd and it took me a while to figure out what was causing it. It turns out that holding back 36kilos’ worth of dog takes its toll!
If you find yourself getting frustrated then you’re not alone! Many people feel the same and I’ve certainly been there. But there is hope! Check out this video if you need to see it to believe it.
Did you see yesterday’s post? To get started on the path to better walks with your dog you can jump into the BRAND NEW ‘Stop Pulling!’ course 🤩 #onlinedogtraining #absolutedogs #looseleadwalking
Allow me to introduce you to my assistant. Granted, he tends to do more watching and sleeping than actual assisting. I should probably have a word with him about that.
We managed to get out for a walk this lunchtime and after a good run around and pheasant hunt Bodhi is ready to snooze the afternoon away 😴
Have fun with recall!
How to improve your dog’s recall? Have fun with it! Play games that incorporate your dog’s recall cue and your dog will soon understand that when they hear that sound they need to whip round to you because something good is on its way. Your dog should light up when they hear their recall cue 🤩
Remember to set your dog up for success:
- always use a longline until you’re sure your dog won’t fail and ignore its recall
- start in a low distraction area and gradually build up the distractions (e.g. home>garden>empty car park>field>forest>other dogs)

How do you train a recall? Introducing a #recall cue to your dog should be easy and fun. I like to break it down into easy to follow steps that gradually increase the difficulty for your dog. This way your dog can be set up for success and you’ll be able to build a whiplash reaction in your dog when they hear their recall cue. If you’d like any help with your dog’s recall then get in touch! Alternatively, check out my 4 week Rock Solid Recall course at www.essencedog.co.uk/packages/
