Salisbury Dog Trainers Jenni Molland continues to host her Perfect Puppy School. Jenni has worked as a dog trainer and behaviourist for 26 years do you and your puppy couldn’t be in better hands.
Due to popularity she is now running two classes in September on Wednesday 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, at Britford village hall.
Class 1 starts at 18.45 and Class 2 at 20.00. Lasting an hour Jenni has a week by week program that will help you to gain the skills to become a perfect pup parent.
Classes are limited to 6 per class, this is not a puppy play school, focus is on training, with keeping their focus on you and not all the other pups in the room. It’s the perfect socialisation experience as they get to see all the other pups but soon get used to not being able to interact during training time.

As Jenni approaches her 27th year of working as a dog behavourist, we reflect on her career and the joys it has filled her with.
Starting out in her native country Finland in 1997, Jenni quickly became well know in the dog training circles. Obedience was the big thing back then ( a word we don't use these days much) As who wants an obedient dog? yes a well adjusted /balanced dog, but obedient seems such a forceful term to apply to a living creature.
Working with Black Russian terriers Jenni soon became a champion winning the 1999 Finnish version of Crufts, in the category "Best Bitch" Moving on to becoming a volunteer search and rescue team member as she advanced through her tracking qualifications.
By 2001 she was already helping many others to rehabilitate their dog behaviour problems. Along side this she spent years reading and studying the early science behind behavioural issues.
Now after 13 years of living in the UK, Jenni is the owner and lead behaviourist of Salisbury Dog trainers. She has worked with around 10,000 dogs and most importantly owners. As it is the relationship between the owner and the dog that ultimately is the key to a successful outcome.
When looking for a dog behaviourist my advice is to start at the top, we see many clients that didn't, they went for less experienced or cheaper professionals.

All these dogs have been rehabilitated by their hard working parents. They now honour me by becoming part of my helpers network so other clients with dogs that have similar behaviour issues can benefit.
We don’t post too many videos of our work, but here is a recent case that was close to our hearts. As we own German Shepherds (rescues) ourselves.
Clyde has problems walking, he couldn’t control how he reacted in a social setting. Please note that we don’t label Clyde as a reactive dog, labels are for products, Clyde is a living breathing animal. He is not reactive all day long, he is a lovely dog that is prone to reacting as explained above.
His dog dad would go walking at 4am to avoid everyone. His dog mum just couldn’t handle him. After the first of two sessions Clyde went from impossible for his owners to manage on walks to no problem at all and it got even easier after some support and further training. Even mum can walk him now !!

Jenni has won her fair share of awards and accolades over the past 26 years. Last year Salisbury dog trainers scooped up 6 awards and we have already retained 3 of them this year too. Ok well awards are not the thing that sets our business apart from other trainers locally and nationally. We don't spend much time posting videos on social media, showing before and afters, as these prove nothing! We do spend all of our time, dedicated to helping people with their dogs, whether that be through classes, one to ones or online video calls. Concentrating on developing our service is the most important aspect of business for us. Never worried about what others are doing, we have never really suffered with the so call competition. Following up with all our clients many months after the training is complete. Setting realistic time frames on training as apposed to the one session at a time model.
Our reputation is strong, our business is strong, and the glue that holds this together is the talent not only with dogs but with the owners too, that talent being Jenni Molland.
When you choose a dog trainer/behaviourist there is always an element of that leap of faith. Spending money on any form of dog training in most cases could be seen as luxury purchase rather than a necessity. But the fact remains that dog training is becoming more and more popular as we strive to understand our pets better.

We don’t allow them to play with each other off lead, it’s a controlled environment that allows them to learn around distractions. Don’t believe all the hype that puppy classes are to distracting, quite the opposite really.

Training this week in Chichester, I’m fortunate that my work takes me outside of Salisbury on many occasions. I do really enjoy getting away to help clients from further s field. Training with Bear was really rewarding as we worked to rehabilitate his resource guarding behaviour. There were some other smaller problems that needed working on too, but basically it all boiled down to that good old communication. Teaching a positive approach to both bear and his parents proved really successful. Working head on with the issues and not dancing around them as always gets the best long term results.
Tune into BBC Wiltshire sound tomorrow at 10.35. We will be doing a live interview on responsible dog ownership and dog attacks here in Wiltshire.

Paws-itive vibes only! Our puppy classes were a tail wagging success, teaching these adorable fur-babies all the foundations from simple commands to learning how to engage with their owners.
With only 4 pups attending the environment was certainly not to distractive, we didn’t allow puppy play, more so we were able to teach them how to focus on the training rather than other pups.
These pups are ready to conquer the world one wag at a time.

I go on about this a lot, but it is true and has been part of my life for what seems for ever.
Being a behaviorist is definitely not all about how well I can train the dogs. Rather how good I am at teaching my clients how to train their own dog.
After 26 years or so there is not much I don’t understand about dog behaviour. I’m certainly no student of dog training more so an accomplished expert.
Most of us in this industry realise that a high proportion of dog behaviour problems are caused by the owners. People have always been the biggest obstacle with any dog behaviourists results.
26 years has given me time to understand how to get the best out of dog owners. I mean we all have different lives and circumstances so when some take to training like a duck to water, others need a different approach.
Patience - Understanding - Compassion - Empathy
Understanding human psychology and how to connect the dots between owner and dog is fundamental to great successes, longevity and reputation.
I have been fortunate enough to travel the world during my career and now spend most of my time working within 40 miles of home.
I will keep on doing this, it’s my passion and not a job to me.

Buddy a lovely French Bull Dog mixed Pug. This was today’s behaviour training mission. Buddy does have quite a few issues to deal with and has been through two other trainers but to no effect. The good news is they have no found me. I have met many other dogs with the same types of behaviour that Buddy is displaying and so I’m more than confident in the outcome. There was some real progress made to day and although these are just baby steps, they are important to the overall results. Lots of homework for the parents to work on and we will see each other again soon for a follow up. Good things to come for Buddy and his family in the near future I feel
Responsible dog ownership is something we should all take seriously. With the recent ban of the XL bully this has taught us the government are not going to mess around when it comes to keeping the public safe. Although we don't blame the type of dog we certainly blame the owners. There will be more added to the ban list in the coming years, but as dog owners of large, medium or small we need to remember the rules both written and unwritten.

Perfect puppy school was a pawfect time for all. So many lovely people and such cute wonderful little dogs. Everyone passed with flying colours and they all have the foundations to raise a well balanced dog. I love teaching these small groups, watching how they master the skills and all without letting their puppies be overwhelmed or distracted. Working in this environment can be really beneficial for owner and pups. We all like to do things in different ways, I work one to one and in groups to cater for all types of dog owner. Thank you to all my recent graduates for making it such a fun 4 weeks. The final Puppy School runs from June 5th to 26th on Wednesday’s 7-8 at britford village hall. Dogs, at times have reactivity problems. These types of cases make up a small percentage of the types of behaviour we help with. However over 26 years of working with this behaviour let's just say Jenni knows a thing or two about it. As a professional behaviourist she always is keen to admit the following. "Breaking through to the owners is the most powerful tool in my bag" We often talk about this subject, it is the hidden part of this business that truly allows you to perform as a real professional. We didn't capture the before of Ronnie (Cane Corso) but the recommendation says it all and the after is self explanatory. Congrats to his owners for trusting in our services. Working with Bayley and his owner was a pleasure. Sometimes tackling things head on is the best way. Here Bayleys mum learned how to keep him engaged while dealing with the constant pulling. Now we have time to work on other areas of his training in our second session. Of course training will be everyday for Bayley so he keeps progressing in the same way. As always Jenni is in the background supporting all these changes. Best part is Jenni only took the lead for a few minutes to demonstrate and over to you mum!!

Sometimes experienced dog owners that do all the right things end up with a dog behaving in anti social way. It is always easy for dog professionals to blame the owners for the dogs behaviour. Take Luna and Teddy's owners. After a traumatic experience suffered by Luna the problems began. Teddy then joined in, "what is good for her is good for me" he thought. This happened in the beginning of their life which has been really hard to witness and deal with. Part of the problem became trusting them off lead as the reactive nature was worrying their owners. Step 1 to rehabilitation was to contact us. Step 2 was to book our tried and tested behaviour package. Step 3 was to put trust and faith in Jenni's teachings. Step 4 is the results. Yes they need to keep up the work and things will only get better, Jenni will catch up with them in a month at an aftercare group to check on the progress. With over 26 years working with dog behaviour issues there are not many that can say they have the experience that Jenni does. If you have any kind of behaviour problems with your dog then you know who to contact.
Kelly was struggling with Tally her Hungarian Vizla. The main problem being how easily distracted and reactive Tally was. As she is a strong dog, Kelly would find herself being pulled from pillar to post, especially when walking past other dogs. Although this video doesn’t offer any proof of what Jenni does as a trainer, it does show how through focus and engagement, Tally is improving on her walks. Since training finished Kelly reports that Tally is amazing now and she is so happy that she found us.
Lara is an 8 + year old rehomed dog from Cyprus. She was an ex military sniffer dog and ended up in a rehoming shelter. Like most dogs that come across the seas, Lara had certain behaviour problems that her new owners needed help with. One of these behaviour issues was her reactivity to other dogs, (a very common problem) Lack of social interactions with other dogs usually leads to this. To add here, social interactions does not mean dogs off lead jumping and wrestling with each other, more just coming into contact like passing other dogs. This is the kind of behaviour that needs to addressed by the current owner. Lara has come along leaps and bounds as this video shows and this all down to the engagement with her owner Kayleigh. At the moment food is the motivation but in time the hand gesture will take over and then eventually become the normal for them both. I know this through 20+ years of experience. Oh by the way the other dog helpers all had similar reactive problems so hats off again to all my clients, you all have done amazing jobs. Thanks to you all for listening, learning and putting into practice my teachings, its clients like you that make my job so rewarding.
More on Marley!! Alex was really excited to send us some videos of him working with the training homework. After his first session he was managing to get more regular with passing things Marley would of lunged and reacted to before. THIS VIDEO IS NOT ABOUT PROVING OUR TRAINING TECHNIQUES WORK ! As there is much more to the training than what is shown here. I NEVER GIVE TO MUCH AWAY! Alex however has been working on some engagement with Marley and the results can be seen. I will support Alex and Marley until they see me again, I can only see a good outcome for them.
Marley reacts to pretty much everything that moves past him, from bins to cyclists etc. There is lots of videos of him doing this but for now as training has just begun, we wanted to highlight how quick his owners have adapted to training. The perfect clients are those that listen and learn quickly. After all, What is the use of a well trained dog without a well trained owner. I have been teaching pet dog owners for decades, dog training is for the whole family not just the dogs. More on Marley's progress to follow in the coming days and weeks.
Great fun working with Des to help him and his working Cocker Spaniel, Sherlock. The best part for me was after we had solved the case, there was time to add in one of my favourite things to do with dogs, "Forest Tracking" I am a fully qualified scent work instructor, this is more popular in my native country Finland, this is where I gained all my qualifications and was part of a search and rescue team too. Teaching Des and Sherlock was amazing, I honestly have to say that Sherlock is a complete natural, well done to you both and hopefully now we can stay away from the operating table.
