New Treatment for Headshaking: Electroacupuncture 🐴✨

Today, Beth and Nicky had the pleasure of working alongside the brilliant Dr. Sue Devereux to learn how to perform Electroacupuncture – an exciting and promising treatment option for equine headshaking, specifically trigeminal nerve-mediated headshaking (TMHS).

TMHS causes involuntary and often distressing head flicking and shaking in horses. Electroacupuncture offers a valuable management tool to help alleviate pain and reduce nerve sensitivity, allowing affected horses to remain comfortable and continue in work.

✨ How it works:
The treatment involves stimulating the trigeminal nerve with a combination of acupuncture needles and electric current to help modulate pain perception.

📊 Encouraging results:
In a study Dr. Devereux was involved in (RVC), nearly two-thirds of the 42 horses treated with electroacupuncture showed improvement – a promising outcome for such a challenging condition.

✅ Key benefits:
• Targets pain associated with TMHS
• Shown to improve quality of life in many horses
• Generally well-tolerated and can be performed in the yard
• A useful tool in ongoing management – though not a cure

We’re excited to bring this knowledge to our practice and offer another supportive treatment option to help horses live and work more comfortably.

♻️ A Sustainable Approach to Wormers ♻️

The British Equine Veterinary Association has highlighted a growing issue with the blanket use of equine wormers, showing that it contributes to insect population decline and parasite resistance, reducing their future effectiveness. Wormers also harm beneficial species like dung beetles, which help maintain soil health and parasite control, and can pollute aquatic ecosystems.

By following these simple guidelines, we can reduce the environmental impact and ensure wormers stay effective for our horses:

✅ Avoid blanket use of wormers: Only worm when necessary, based on risk assessments, worm egg counts, and tapeworm saliva tests.
✅ Target specific horses: 20% of horses carry 80% of the small redworm burden, so not all horses need regular treatment.
✅ Weigh before dosing: Ensure proper dosing by weighing your horse. Under or overdosing can cause resistance.
✅ Consult your vet: Always check which wormer to use. Ivermectin is particularly harmful to the environment.
✅ Manage muck heaps: Store manure contaminated with wormers for at least 6 months before spreading.
✅ Pick up poo regularly: Clean fields weekly (twice weekly in summer) to reduce worm burden.
✅ Dispose of packaging safely: Return wormer packaging for proper disposal.
✅ Post-worming care: Remove manure daily for 2 weeks after treatment.
✅ Muck heap tips: Keep your muck heap away from water and cover it to prevent contamination.

We ALL have a duty to protect our horses, the environment, and the long-term effectiveness of wormers. Resistance is becoming a serious issue and can lead to horse deaths.

Understanding Sweet Itch in Horses and the Role of Vaccination 🐴💉

Sweet itch, also known as insect bite hypersensitivity, is a common allergic reaction in horses caused by bites from midges, particularly those of the Culicoides species. This condition leads to intense itching and discomfort, primarily affecting areas such as the mane, tail, and belly. Affected horses may exhibit persistent rubbing, hair loss, and inflamed or scabbed skin. Beyond physical symptoms, sweet itch can significantly impact a horse’s overall well-being and behaviour.

Innovative Vaccination Approach 💉

In recent years, a vaccine originally developed to combat ringworm has shown promise in reducing the symptoms of sweet itch. This vaccine is used off-license in the UK for this purpose. The vaccination protocol involves administering two intramuscular injections, approximately two weeks apart, ideally before the start of the midge season. For ongoing protection, the vaccine can be repeated every nine months or restarted annually before the midge season.

Comprehensive Management Strategies 🛡️

To effectively manage and prevent sweet itch, consider implementing the following strategies:
• Insect Control: Regular application of insect repellents, use of fly sheets or sweet itch-specific rugs, and stabling during peak midge activity periods (dusk to dawn) can help reduce exposure.
• Environmental Management: Keeping horses in open, breezy fields can deter midges, as they are weak fliers. Avoiding pastures near woodlands or standing water, which are common midge breeding grounds, is also beneficial. Regular cleaning of water troughs can prevent midge larvae development.
• Stable Modifications: Installing insect-proof mesh on stable windows and doors, and using fans to create air movement, can discourage midges from entering stables.
• Nutritional Support: There is some evidence that feed supplements designed to support skin health, such as Cavelesse and Brewer’s Yeast, may help alleviate symptoms.

Take Action Now! 📅

As the midge season approaches, it’s crucial to implement preventive measures early. If you’re considering the vaccination for your horse, please get in touch with us to discuss the best approach and schedule an appointment. Together, we can ensure your horse enjoys a comfortable and itch-free season.
