I think it is safe to say, we have all had problems loading our horses before, so here are a few of our techniques we use to teach our foals to load.
**We take no responsibility in the outcome you may have using these techniques, this is just how we teach our foals.**
The main thing to consider before teaching your horse to load, is how effective your aids are for inhand work. Your signals to your horse needs to be clear and confident when asking it to move away from you and the pressure released instantly as soon as the horse has moved in the direction you require. The pressure release is always the reward. Pressure and release should always be taught in tiny steps, built up over time.
Asking your horse to walk over poles and different surfaces, weaving in and out of safe obstacles and asking your horse to stop and walk on are great building blocks. Once you are both confident in these steps, open up your horse transport and make it as inviting as possible for your horse. Do not expect them to walk in on the first time.
Doing some in-hand work with your horse around the vehicle will help keep their focus on you. Circling around the vehicle, getting closer to the ramp each time is a great way to desensitise your horse.
As the ramp can make an off putting noise and movement when the horse steps on for the first time. Staying on the circle and asking them to step on and off quietly can be a great start to desensitising them.
Once they are confident in these steps, you can start to ask the horse to approach the horse box. Allow them to sniff the ramp and investigate it. You might find they offer to walk on, allow it.
If they rush backwards do not tell them off. Reestablish your ground work and then approach the horse box again.
Your horse standing on the ramp without rushing off or panicking is a win, the pressure should be released and horse rewarded.
In small steps, the distance they travel up the ramp can be increased until they are happy standing in
We thought we would share a bit of the behind the scenes, teaching our foals the basics of loading and quietly picking up feet, ready for the farrier.
We pride ourselves on producing confident well rounded ponies ready to go on to persue their ridden careers.
