Separation Anxiety in Dogs
Separation anxiety happens when a dog has the overwhelming fear of being left alone, to the point of being stressed or distressed. Separation related behaviours can occur for several reasons. In order to successfully solve the anxiety, we must first understand what’s causing it. Symptoms can be mild or quite obvious, which makes it easier for the owner to identify, or more difficult and deep rooted which can often go unnoticed. Each dog is an individual and so is their experience of suffering, dogs are not programmed to be alone.
Some of the triggers for the behaviour are;
Boredom, frustration, fear, anxiety.
Some of the indicators of stress are;
Pacing, yawning, lip licking, ears pinned back, tail between legs, excessive panting, excessive barking, whining.
Some of the consequences are;
Destruction of their surroundings, self harm, defecation in the home, obsessive worrying, ill health.
Some solutions for this are;
Training, to build the dog's confidence and eliminate the element of stress, this will take time and patience depending on your dog’s ability to learn.
Dog day care, which will give your dog the important mix of interaction with humans and other dogs.
Regularly daily dog walks, that will increase your dog’s physical and mental stimulation, and reduce his/her level of boredom and worry.
REMEMBER, the average working day is a long time for your dog to be left on it’s own.
Should you come home and be unlucky enough to find your dog has been destructive or has made a mess, the absolute wrong thing to do is punish your pet.
IT’S NOT YOUR DOG’S FAULT!
