Clark's Little Ark Sanquhar

Clark's Little Ark Sanquhar A result of observing the enjoyment that animals brought to people, Being near the town, people from the local communities began to visit the animals.

Clark's Little Ark began evolving unintentionally in December 2012,
A small piece of land at the former brickworks in Sanquhar, became home to my miniature Shetland ponies and donkeys. Watching the enjoyment shared between humans and animals was so rewarding and the animal family began to grow! In May 2013 ,sadness and heartbreak struck our family, when our beloved son Clark passed away. Although

Clark had many "labels" of disability, he was a happy, loving boy who loved being around happy, smiling people. Clark's Little Ark was named in his memory. We know he would approve of all the smiles that take place at the Ark. The Ark has also helped our family deal with our grief, even on the most difficult days. We have been so lucky receiving support from the local communities and beyond, to help keep Clark's Little Ark free and accessible to all ages and abilities. We are indebted to THE FRIENDS (AND WEE FRIENDS) OF CLARK'S LITTLE ARK, who volunteer their own time to arrange meetings, fundraise, organise open days and manage all donations, bank accounts and paper work. This enables everyone to see where and when their kind donations are being used. We are extremely grateful to everyone who supports Clark's Little Ark in any way at all and hope the smiles continue for many years to come. PLEASE NOTE - Clark's Little Ark can be found at the Old Brickworks. It is situated on the left hand side of the road, just before the civic amenity site, St Mary's Street Sanquhar DG4 6BS. There is very limited parking at the Ark and if specialist access is required please contact Alison Shankly on 07789394138, 0165950123 or email [email protected]
As far as possible, arrangements will be made to meet your needs. Hand cleanser is available at the gate to the yard. For those who don't have mobility problems, parking is usually available at Sanquhar Station, which is nearby.. The Ark is FREE to all visitors - all we ask for payment is a smile.

** ••••SINCE COVID 19 THE FOLLOWING CAN CHANGE DAILY -
( Please feel free to go down the track and enjoy spending time with the animals. If Alison or any the Friend's of Clark's Little Ark are around there will be an opportunity to interact with some of the animals. However, in the interest of Health and Safety, no one is allowed in beside any of the animals unsupervised. If the green gate at the top is unchained, visitors can walk up the newly fenced track (funded by a grant from PROPEL) up to a picnic bench in the top field. The animals will be in paddocks at the side. If the yard gate at the bottom is not chained, it will be possible to enter and visit the animals that may be in the stables, as well as Percy the pig. PLEASE TO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS NEAR PERCY, AS HE THINKS MOST THINGS ARE FOR EATING! If any the gates are chained it means ANIMALS WILL BE LOOSE, SO PLEASE DO NOT ENTER. )****

We hope you enjoy your visit and please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. The animals will update their news on here :-)
Please allow for their spelling mistakes!! Thank you Alison and Ian Shankly and family (human and animal)

You may remember Primary 1 from Kelloholm Primary came to visit a few weeks ago.
Well since their visit they have been very, very busy.
They have been baking, growing plants and flowers as well as making lots of lovely cards, pictures and craft work.
Then they set up a shop and invited mums, dads and friends to come to their shop.
From the sales they made the amazing amount of £104 and donated it to help Clark’s Little Ark 😃
The boat in the play area is out of use at the moment because it needs a new floor and seats. This money will go towards repairing the boat so children can enjoy it again.
We will put a plaque on when it is sorted saying thanks to primary 1 but we will share a picture as the school will be on holiday after tomorrow.
A big thank you to Primary 1, Mrs McKinna, staff and everyone who helped in any way.
It was very kind and very much appreciated.
Enjoy your holidays 😊

Sunday was a busy day in the hot sun.
Firstly thanks to the boys who came and sheared Fudge and Eck ( Jeff will get done again in the autumn) but we might need to stick some wool back on Fudge because he can jump even higher now with all his wool off! They are much cooler now although I can’t say the same for the boys doing the shearing!
Thanks also to the supervisor and boys from unpaid work for taking down a big shed that was becoming rotten and unsafe.Although it was rotten in places what a lot of work was involved in taking it down, it certainly didn’t come down easily. After the shed was down Jennifer noticed a tiny hedgehog tucked under a beam of wood from the base of the shed. We took advice from South of Scotland Wildlife Hospital and done everything they suggested.
However today he was beginning to pant and we phoned the SSPCA who sent someone out to check him over.
He was ok but being so small needed to go to hospital, so he was put into a box and he’s off in the SSPCA van to hospital for some TLC.
The SSPCA officer said that because he’s so young he doesn’t need to come back here as he is too small to have territory marked out yet.
He’s a lucky boy and thankfully Jennifer noticed him and it was another happy hedgehog ending 😊

We found an old Riding of the Marches photo that shows the entrance to Clark’s Little Ark many years ago. You can clearly see the railway track that used to take the clay from the quarry to the brickworks which was such a busy industry in its day.
Some posts for the gates are still there.
If only they could talk.

If anyone from the Failford area has lost a hen we have her at the Ark. John Sterling found her with a leg injury at the roadside. He asked about locally and couldn’t find her owner, he contacted the SSPCA but because she wasn’t a wild bird they couldn’t help at the moment. So he brought her down to the ark on Saturday. We have named her Meg and her sore leg is improving with rest and she is now able to bear weight on it.She is enjoying resting, quietly in her own space and having food and water delivered straight to her house.
She paid us back by laying an egg 🥚 There’s a poem in there somewhere Meg, leg and egg!

Yesterday we had a lovely visit and chat with Fiona Armstrong from ITV Border.
Watch this space… 😊

We were very sorry to hear the sad news that our friend Alex Harvey passed away this morning.
Alex made beautiful glass donkeys , sheep and pigs to help raise funds for Clark’s Little Ark.
He will be missed by many people and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

A busy day yesterday despite the rain, with food, friends, cowboys, cowgirls and a new horse called Trigger! 🤠
A delivery of hay brought smiles from the animals too although the donkeys chose to stand in the rain and eat if off the trailer instead of going into the shelter!
Thanks to everyone who helped.
Throughout school Clark had a good friend who was always there for him and despite living near London she still comes to visit the Ark and take flowers to Clark when back up visiting family.
So it was lovely to have a visit from Janet yesterday ❤️
Janet also gave us some ideas that has our minds going tic-toc! Watch this space because she’ll be checking up on us for progress! 🤣
Then in the afternoon we had an invite to Queensberry Carehome as they were having a Western day .Our friend Andrea and her team had been extremely busy as always and everyone had a lovely time. Well done to all involved. Thanks to Catherine for her help which enabled us to take Effie the pony down along with Walter the dog. The animals enjoyed meeting up with old friends and making new ones.
Effie was extra pleased to meet Andrea’s new horse Trigger 😃
