Little guy came to say hello!
‼️‼️🪲🪲TICKS 🪲🪲‼️‼️
I’ve found a couple of these nasty little things on the dogs this week so I thought I’d share some more info on the horrid little bloodsuckers! This can be applied to cats & humans too, as ticks really aren't fussy with who they latch onto!
The joys of my job i have had to remove 1 from myself, they really will latch on to anything they can to get fed.
For my clients, I check your dogs after every walk but ticks can take some time to show so please also check your dogs. If you feel unsure about anything, feel free to drop me a message or contact your vet if you need too.
During warmer seasons, check your dog for ticks daily. They can feel like a small, firm lump in your dog's fur, the area may look irritated. Your dog can get ticks even when receiving preventative treatment, so checking is vital.
Ticks like to hide in the following areas on your dog: (Most common areas, but will latch on anywhere they can)
-Under the collar
-Near ears/eyes
-Inside ears
-Between paw pads
-Groin
-Underarms
How to remove:
-Use a tick removal tool and part your dog's fur
-Place the tool gently under the tick's body (as close to the skin as possible), gently twist the tick out instead of pull, this will avoid tearing the tick & avoid infection
-If you do tear the tick and some of it is left in your dog's skin, don't panic and book a vet appointment, where they will be able to safely remove the tick
-Once you have the full tick removed, put the tick in a sealed container of bleach, rubbing alcohol or vinegar. DO NOT pour the tick down the drain or put them in water, as they can survive in water
-Make sure to clean the bite area on your dog with warm salt water and a cotton pad to avoid infection
Some ticks can carry Lyme disease, after removing the tick look out for these symptoms in your dog:
-Fever
-Fatigue
-Lameness
-Loss of appetite
-Joint swelling
*Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these symptoms after removi
