‼️REMINDER FOR ALL CLIENTS ‼️

We are on an amber alert for strong winds tomorrow, so please take care coming to and from your appointments!

If you need to cancel, possibly running a few minutes behind, or unable to make it due to the weather please call in or message in advance.

Unfortunately even when the weather is bad our overheads still need to be paid so there is a chance you will be charged a small fee to cover the groomers time and income!

Thank you and stay safe!

Breed of the week!

The Labrador Retriever

The Labrador originates from Newfoundland USA who were renowned for their fishing industry. It is said to have been a cross between the smaller Newfoundland dog of the time (the St John’s Dog) and hunting dogs from England that created the first representative of the breed we now know today! Some of these dogs were taken over to England by the traders at the time and quickly found popularity among the sporting gentlemen of the time. In 1903 the breed were recognised by the Kennel Club and shortly after the breed club was formed in 1916.

Right into modern times the Labrador has been an incredibly popular breed, this is due to their many abilities out in the fields at work and their adaptability as a family pet. The original purpose of the Labrador was to retrieve birds shot down by the hunters, this is more commonly known as working to the gun.
It is said that the Labrador would work long hours during the day, then return home to play with the children. Even now this is still the case with most labradors still being used for their original purposes even in a family setting.

Labradors are known for their outstanding temperament and ability to remain calm during almost all situations. They have an extreme focus which makes them one of the easier breeds to train, this is why so many Labrador’s go into service work for example seeing eye dogs.
Although they can be very easy to train, their extreme focus can sometimes cause issues. If they spot something more interesting for them it can sometimes be a challenging task to regain their focus, this can make recall training extremely challenging.

Labradors have a dense short coat which can be harsh to the touch, underneath is a softer weather proof undercoat. This style of coat is known to be water resistant and very weatherproof especially in the colder seasons. Labradors are a shedding breed and will ‘blow’ their coat twice a year in preparation for the weather changes. No, this doesn’t make them bald as only the undercoat comes out!

Since Labradors are a short coated breed they don’t need your standard grooming procedure. However, due to the shedding it is recommended they and bathed along with a good blast from a high velocity dryers to remove any loose undercoat. Although they may seem like they don’t need any brushing at all, the Labrador will benefit from a good once over with a deshedding tool every few months.

If you have any suggestions for breed you would like to see featured, please let us know!

Breed of the week!

The Border Terrier

A sturdy terrier built for stamina, the border terrier originated in the borders of Northumberland and Scotland eventually gaining their name in 1880 along with other nicknames such as the Reedwater Terrier and the Coquetdale Terrier.

They were a breed whose main purpose was ground work, following the Border Foxhounds and baying foxes out of dens during the hunt, although they are now more commonly found on the sofa at home.

The breed became popular quickly, not only for hunting purposes but also as adaptable family pets, however they can be quite the little terror! With a strong prey drive and oftentimes a need for attention they have been known to be clingy, loud and hard work for their owners. However, with the right training they can be the sweetest family pets!

Border Terriers come in a few colours, these are:
-Grizzle (all grizzle variations)
-Blue & Tan
-Wheaten
-Red
The most common colours seen are Grizzle and Blue & Tan

Border terriers have a ‘handstrip’ coat, this means that the coat has a rough feel and is able to be pulled out by hand. This does not hurt and keeps their coat weather resistant and smooth to the skin. The reasoning behind this type of coat was to stop them getting stuck is the undergrowth while hunting foxes. More recently clipping the coat has become more popular with pets but as groomers we strongly recommend that handstripping is done for the first year to 2 years, this allows the adult coat to grow in correctly.

Let us know what breed you would like to hear about next! 🐾
