Why You Should Train Your Dog to Be Neutral Around Livestock
Living in the countryside often means being surrounded by livestock like sheep, cattle, goats, or chickens. While it may seem natural for dogs to interact with these animals, it's crucial to train your dog to remain neutral around livestock. Here’s why:
Prevent Accidents: Untrained dogs may chase or scare livestock, leading to injury or stress for both the animals and the dog. A well-trained dog will stay calm, reducing the risk of accidents or property damage.
Legal and Financial Consequences: In many areas, dog owners can be held legally or financially responsible if their dog harms livestock. Proper training helps avoid these costly situations.
Strengthens Obedience: Teaching your dog to remain neutral around livestock reinforces other key commands like recall and sit, strengthening your overall control.
Promotes Safety for Your Dog: Livestock can react unpredictably if they feel threatened. A neutral dog is less likely to be kicked, trampled, or injured in an altercation.
Training your dog to be neutral around livestock is a small investment that leads to a safer, more harmonious life in the countryside for everyone—paws, hooves, and all!

This is Nala, a 2-year-old reactive Rhodesian Ridgeback. Addressing reactivity can be extremely challenging and it doesn't happen overnight. This progress comes after three sessions focused on engagement, loose lead walking, recall, and maintaining calm around other dogs from a distance. After that groundwork, we introduced my stooge dog, Mabel, to help Nala learn to pass other dogs calmly at close range. Behavior modification involves changing how your dog thinks and reacts to distractions, requiring hard work, perseverance, and patience through both failures and successes.
If you are struggling with your dog's reactivity reach out and book a discovery call with Phoebe. 🐾🐶
