Continuing the Bite Prevention Week theme.
Children represent a massive proportion of reported dog bite cases. These pictures, selected from a massive library of similar stock photos of children with dogs, show some of the reasons for this.
Humans like physical contact. We're generally huggers, particularly with a gorgeous animal like a dog - that soft coat and gorgeous faces just look perfect for a hug, especially to a child.
Dogs are definitely not like us in this way. True, there are some dogs who may enjoy cuddling up with their people, and even like or don't mind hugs. One of my dogs is very much in favour of physical contact. Importantly, however, it is only with the people he chooses. The ones he knows and trusts.
Kids often cannot read canine body language. The signs are here in the photographs used of a tense and unhappy dog, but the children in these pictures can't see and interpret them.
It's up to us as adults, whether parents, dog caregivers, or both, to make sure that we are educated on canine body language and can see the signs of stress.
That we make sure to advocate for the dogs so that they are not put in this position.
To make sure that the children around us are educated and taught about the likes and dislikes of dogs.
To stop putting children and dogs into potentially dangerous situations for the cute photo or video (the videos of babies propped up against dogs make most behaviour professionals shudder because that is so not fair on either species!)
Let's be fair to both dogs and children and use education and understanding to keep children and dogs happy and safe together.
Do you have a 'problem' with your dog you would like to solve?
Invariably there are skills lacking at a fundamental level....gaps in your dog's education so to speak.
If we want to learn to speak French then we do so in a quiet environment learning one word initially before progressing to sentences. We most certainly do not expect to be able to learn to speak French sat in a Parisian cafe discussing politics with the waiter!
So why do we expect this of our dogs?
Whenever you have a 'problem' you want to solve look to your basics because I can guarantee you they will most certainly be lacking.
Many of these perceived 'problems' cease to exist when we have taught our dogs good core skills.
πΎ Your dog pinches other dogs balls in the park = recall weakness
πΎ Your dog fixates on movement = Focus on you weakness
πΎ Your dog jumps up at visitors = impulse control weakness
πΎ Your dog is overexcited around children = management weakness
πΎ Your dog pulls you to see other dogs = Focus on you weakness
πΎ Your dog's guarding is out of hand = management weakness
The weakness in these fundamental skills will overlap in many situations.
Whenever you experience a 'problem' .... look to your fundamentals first to help you find the solution.
When little cute dogs go with the Big dogs sometimes a treat is the only answer π€£πβπ¦ΊππΆπΎ

There is a very good reason why we say never punish a growl. If a dog is punished for growling they may well stop growling, but that doesn't change the fact that they are extremely uncomfortable or scared in that situation. Without the growl to be able to warn us, they are left with little choice but to escalate their warning signals to us. Perhaps even forced to the point where they feel feel their only option to escape a situation is to bite.
One of the most important things we can do when living with dogs is to make sure we educate ourselves in how dogs communicate. This means learning about canine body language.
As primarily verbal communicators, we pay less attention to body language than dogs do. For them communication is through scent (a world that we do not have the ability to experience as they do) and through body language signs and signals.
These signals can be incredibly subtle but, with education and practice observing them, we can learn to see what our dogs are telling us and others around them.
This will help us to see how the dog is feeling about the situation that they are in, and to judge what they need in that moment to help them feel safe and secure.
Learn to listen to your dogs in the way most important to them and your relationship and bond will go from strength to strength.
