Spike visited our Nurse last week for a general check up! ๐ We always aim to make the appointment as stress free as possible, and as you can see Spike was having a great time! ๐ Spike was very relaxed and comfortable in his appointment and can be seen playing with his toys from home! โฌ๐ฑโจ
Eva - BOAS Surgery
In the video below is Eva - a 4 year old Bulldog ๐ถ
Eva was suffering from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome - this is the term given to the effects that the shortened head of certain breeds has on the passage of air through the upper airways. The signs can vary from mild snoring or snorting noises to severe breathing problems.
In the first part of the video below of Eva you can hear the difficulty she was experiencing to simply breathe normally. This was after a 3 minute walk! ๐ Her temperature increased, breathing became harder, she started to drool and experienced cyanosis (not enough oxygen being carried to the body by the red blood cells, therefore turning her gums blue). After 10 minutes Eva still hadn't recovered from this small walk. โ๏ธ
Eva's owner made the decision to proceed with BOAS surgery - this involved the excess tissue obstructing her airway being removed, along with her nostrils being widened.
As you can see from the video below, the transformation and difference it has made to Eva is HUGE! ๐ฅฐ Just 7 days post surgery the noise is almost non-existent and Eva is generally more relaxed too. ๐

Nutrition is a vital part of your petโs life, and our nurses are here to advise you on whatโs best for you and your pet! ๐ The nurse will take into account your petโs age/breed/lifestyle/body condition, and discuss various options with you before deciding what is best. This could be a simple change such as a neutered cat/dog diet, or a prescription weight loss diet if your pet is overweight. If you are just simply stuck on how much to feed your pet, the nurse can calculate the daily calories your pet requires based on their weight and age and help you with this too! ๐
Nutrition also involves providing the most appropriate diet for our in-patients too. Check out Penny in the video below enjoying some gastrointestinal food after surgery! ๐ This particular food is low in fat which is perfect after an anaesthetic!

While many cases of arthritis occur in older, overweight cats, the condition can affect cats of all sizes, ages and breeds!
Sadly, many cases of feline arthritis go undiagnosed because owners assume slowing down is simply part of getting older. ๐

This is carried out almost daily by the Veterinary Nurse in their clinics, whether it be dogs, cats, rabbits or guinea pigs. ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฐ
Some owners are happy to do this themselves at home, however sometimes this can be tricky if your pet has dark nails, as the quick isn't visible. ๐
In practice we have certain ways to stop this bleeding, so if unsure always book in with a VN for your pets nails clipping! ๐

As mentioned in Sunday's post, Veterinary Nurses are able to complete additional qualifications after their training is complete if they wish. ๐ฉโ๐๐จโ๐
Our VN Bryony chose to attend a physiotherapy course as she always had an interest in this particular area. ๐ This is extremely useful for patients recovering from orthopaedic surgery, along with our arthritic patients too! ๐พ
