We understand that it can be very difficult to attend a veterinary surgery with a well pet, and travelling with a sick pet can be even more tricky. We are a veterinary surgeon and nurse team who ONLY carry out house visits. We travel in a fully equipped converted van across south Sheffield and surrounding areas. Even if we do not cover your area, call us, and we may be able to squeeze an appointment in for you.

A big thank you to CJ Signs in Killamarsh for putting the graphics on our new van 'Joseph' today. Joseph is a very special van as he is named after Charlotte's grandad who used to drive ambulances. He also carries one of the actual Joe's special ambulance uniform buttons in a secret drawer.

Welcome to the team Joseph! Give him a wave if you see us out and about in him 😁

We think the actual Joe would love him, if only he were here to see him. He will sit at base next to 'Hilda' 🚐♥️🚐

Tortoise owners of Facebook!! Charlotte's Sulcata tortoise has managed to wander off twice this week (possibly due to her youngest son Rupert's secret tortoise moving skills). Does anyone use a tracking device on their tortoise? Anything that would save Charlotte patrolling the garden for hours on end on tortoise hunts.....(Or would it be easier to track Rupert... 🤔🤔🐢🐢🐢) Thankyou!

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

These little squeakers belong to our RVN Kate, she loves to talk all things guinea pig and rabbit! If you have any questions about how to care for your guinea pigs or rabbits you can make an appointment for Kate to visit you (and them!) in the comfort of your own home. She can chat to you about housing, diet, vaccinations, bonding etc.
She can also clip nails and check weights.

It is a legal requirement for all cats to be microchipped from 10th June. If you would like this done at home, please contact us and one of our lovely nurses will visit to microchip your cat :)

We are closed Good Friday, but open again at 8.30am on Saturday. We will then be closed Sunday and bank holiday Monday and will re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday.

Our new vet Morwenna!

Introducing our new vet Morwenna! She has joined the team this month and has settled in really well. We are so pleased to have her. The last few months have been a little too busy!! She's already a superstar and we know that you will love her! Welcome to the team Wenna :) Charlotte and Katie are looking forward to lots of vet meetings at Starbucks (other coffee establishments are available) and lots of fruit toast lunches (there really is no better Starbucks food option than this amazing toast)....

When the times comes....

This is Jane, one of our lovely clients talking about making a difficult decision one day. Having worked in practices for a number of years, we realise that euthanasia in a clinical practice setting can be impersonal. Having been through this ourselves, we decided to set up our practice to change this, and we find euthanasia at home to be a less stressful experience for all involved; the pet, the owner and ourselves. We provide a range of after care options, and can take pets away for cremation. We use a family run, bespoke pet crematorium: Old Flatts Farm www.oldflattsfarm.co.uk
