Understanding Your Pet's Fear of Fireworks
Many pets, especially dogs and cats, have heightened senses that make them more sensitive to loud sounds like fireworks. The sudden bangs, crackles, and flashes can trigger anxiety and lead to panic and fearful behaviour.
* Signs of Fear: Look out for signs such as trembling, hiding, panting, excessive barking, or attempting to escape.
* Breed Sensitivities: Some breeds are more prone to noise anxiety. For instance, herding breeds and rescue animals may exhibit heightened responses to loud noises.
Some tips…
Provide a Safe Space! Create a cozy, quiet area where your pet can feel safe and relaxed. This could be a crate or a room without windows, with some familiar toys and blankets to comfort them.
Distract and Soothe! Try to distract your pet with some treats, toys, or playtime to take their mind off the noise. You can also try calming aids like pet friendly diffusers, calming music, or a ThunderShirt!
Keep Them Close!! Fear can trigger fight or flight mode. Make sure your pet is wearing an up-to-date ID tag and make sure their microchip is up to date. just in case they do manage to slip out.
If possible, keep your cats inside!! 🐱
Consult Your Vet! If your pet has severe anxiety or noise phobia, speak to your vet for professional advice and guidance.
