We are beyond devastated to say Freya passed away late yesterday ๐
Her family and members of the team were with her and after cuddles, kisses and being told how much we love her, she fell asleep peacefully laid in her mum and dad's arms.
We desperately hoped we had more time ๐ญ
She had made it through the transfusion and after many conversations, research and review of her scans and test result, we had started treatment for Hepatozoon and Babesia infections that have been reported to cause similar symptoms in a small number of case studies. A test was sent off and treatment began in the meantime (as the test result would take too long to come back) on the small chance it was these infections making her so poorly.
But the transfusion and medications she was on just weren't enough to slow the bleeding down to give us more time ๐
The vets believed she was bleeding into her lungs and her brain and/or spinal cord causing her breathing difficulties, the lung shadows seen on the CT scan and the neurological symptoms we've been seeing these past few days. If she were bleeding anywhere other than the places she was, we may have had a better chance but once damage occurs in these areas, the fight becomes much harder.
With a harder time breathing, a rising temperature and worsening signs of damage to her nervous system it became clear we had run out of time and when we went to see Freya, she let us know she was ready now
So we did the last, and hardest, thing we could do for her and let her go
She passed away comfortable, warm, safe and loved with soft voices in her ear and tears on her fur
Something that little puppy who jumped from a roof to save herself from heat, dehydration and starvation could never have dreamed of
She spent the last month (and a bit) being treated like an absolute princess. She got the chance to be part of a pack that loved and protected her, got to run and play knowing she was completely safe with people that would have given everything to save her, she had whatever she wanted to eat and drink and developed expensive tastes! Toys..treats..comfy beds..the best food she could have..and being fully, totally loved
But it just wasn't supposed to end this way and it'll never be ok that we couldn't give her the future we promised her
Freya was only around two years old, still a baby to anyone that knows Huskies!
She had survived things weโll never be able to understand and yet she was so full of trust, ready to love everyone and everything after all she'd been through
Despite her 'disability' and sweetness, she was also full of cheekiness and the husky attitude you can't help falling in love with. She had no clue she was disabled...she ran, played, gave her mum and dad heart attacks with her stunt dog behaviour, managed to hold things with her paws - everything a normal dog would do and usually more!
Which is exactly what makes this so hard
It will never feel fair that she fought so hard to survive and still didn't make it and her life was taken away just as it was beginning and we never got to see her grow into the girl she should've always been
We will always feel she deserved more but we know she left knowing true, deep love and what it meant to finally be part of a family and this matters more than anything
And we know that although she couldn't be healed in this life, she is now. Those legs are healed, the bleeding and strain on her body is gone and she is tearing her way to a better place to wait with all the other kids we've lost and we and her family will see her again
We have no idea what her final bill is at the moment but we know whatever it is, it was worth it ten times over to give her every single chance she wanted to live. I think 7k is the minimim but we'll update about this side of things in a few days.
The referral vets have gone above and beyond for Freya and we will forever be grateful for everything they did for her as we know it was so much more than her care alone and they were trawling the depths of their resources to try and figure out how to save her
We are also so, so thankful for everything they are still going to do
They have fully funded a post-mortem so we can all find some semblance of peace and meaning in losing her. Whilst it's possible we will still never know, it is hoped that they can learn what took her from us and her family, understand how to recognise it and treat it differently or sooner and that in her life can save another, maybe many others.
No matter how long we do this or how many dogs we lose over the years, the deafening silence and stillness that comes after they're gone will never get easier ๐
Freya, you were loved gorgeous, completely and utterly loved..
Run free now sweet girl, your legs are healed and strong, your eyes are clear and your blood won't make you poorly anymore. All we've lost before will meet you north of the bridge and you'll be safe, free and happy until we all see you again
Until then, you will never be forgotten and we hope in losing you, you will pave the way for others to be saved โค๏ธ
