Just had a visit from this little cutie! He was rescued from the Dogs Trust due to an illegal breeder sending him to the UK from Poland. He's spent months in a box, his fur was all matted. He's the sweetest little thing 🖤

So glad I kept this little Man. I was on the fence about his nose pointing, but it is! Started over the past couple of weeks. Usually I can see a shadow at 4 weeks or so. He kept me waiting! 🥰🐾

Don't freak out but this is a piggies skull, I am sharing this for a very good reason...

If you have adopted from us you most likely have already seen this image as I show it to each and every one of our adoptees as to why hay is so important in a piggies diet.

If children are involved in adopting I ask...
How many teeth do piggies have?
Most answer with four! Which is quite understandable as that is the amount we can see.

But as you can see in the circled area below there are a total of 20 teeth altogether!!!
Guinea pigs teeth inscisors (front teeth) and molars (back teeth) all grow at a rate of 3mm per week!

Hay and ONLY HAY (some grasses) keep their teeth ground to the correct length.
Wood chews etc are not needed ONLY HAY.
Sometimes piggies need dentals if they have gone off their food from illness their teeth will overgrow. Or they may be old and have arthritis in their jaw. Or they may be like our Gerry (God love him 🙄 lol) where their jaw doesn't move correctly and he needs a dental monthly. There are many more reasons as well like genetic issues etc.

Sometimes inscisors (front teeth) can fall out or become broken, they usually will be back in a week or so. When this happens I usually suggest grating veggies or giving peelings until they can chew properly again. Making sure the opposite tooth/teeth don't over compensate/overgrow for the missing tooth/teeth.
Having Critta Care or Critical Care for situations like this is a great idea!

So when you hear me going on about teeth and hay you now know what I am talking about. Teeth are tricky, but with the correct care in the first place hopefully we can help to keep these issues at bay 💚
