Talking on BBC Radio 5 live this morning about new microchipping legislation. My heart sinks whenever we get an injured cat brought in and no way of knowing who the owner is, so these new rules can only be a good thing, IMHO.
Often, clients will say to me,'but he doesn't go far'....the reality is most cats are wandering miles further than we think!
It's a quick, easy (depending on the amenability of the cat πΊ) and relatively inexpensive (Β£16.20) procedure.
Remember, your pet cat should be microchipped before 10th June πΊπββ¬οΈπ

Don't worry my tongue is very much inserted in my cheek with this one BUT late appointments can mean we are unable to see you as planned, or you have a significant wait until the next available appointment. A 15-minute slot to take a history, perform a clinical exam, put up drugs, and write our notes is no joke! So even being a few minutes late can eat into that and push everyone else back.
With @getpetsapp, you will receive a notification around 4 pm the day before your appointment, reminding you of the time and reason. You may also receive instructions if you are booked in for a procedure, e.g., when to feed your pet.
We are really excited about this new feature....launch date coming SOON π

A little late to the party, but this May celebrates twenty years of Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! Natalie (yes, the Malthouse is blessed with two Natalies π
), and Sarah are our Registered Veterinary Nurses.
Here's just a few of the things they might be up to out the back :
π Drawing up and administering intravenous medications
π Calculating fluid rates, inserting an IV canula, and drawing blood
π Prepping and monitoring patients for imaging/surgery
π Caring for them throughout the day, performing TPRs and pain scores
I'm not sure I know any other profession that has been as undervalued over the years, but things are really changing for the better!

It's up bright and early for a frank discussion about pricing in the veterinary sector. Here are some of my take homes:
1. The industry has changed massively, but vets/nurses/support staff on the front line are still here for the same reasons...to help you and your pets. Most vets (myself aside, obviously) have ZERO say in pricing structure!
2. It's an incredibly expensive business to run, and as a result, it isn't a cheap service for consumers. We take pride in running a high-quality service for you and your pets.
3. Be wary of click bait headlines like 'it cost Β£600 to pull one tooth out'. No, it didn't. It cost Β£600 for a general anaesthetic, full monitoring equipment, staff being with your animal from admit to discharge, intravenous fluids, pre-op bloods etc etc. It makes me cross when random figures are cited without proper explanation....it's frankly lazy journalism.
4. The majority of us welcome the CMA enquiry! What we don't welcome is the media's on slaught at vets and the abuse that follows it.
5. Yes, more can be done to enable prices to be transparent and fair. We have had great feedback with publishing our prices online and in the waiting room, and we are always more than happy to provide estimates for procedures.
PS apologies for Harley and Hugo barking at the end...that was just on the screen recording, not the live interview, thank goodness π³

Fantastic morning with @thevetmedcprcoach yesterday
We know what a great team we have, but it's always so validating to hear it from others π
Yesterday marked 7-years since I became owner of Malthouse Vets. It's been a year of change and driving forwards. I won't pretend change is something I find easy, but I am really proud of how far the practice has come and the standards we are achieving.
Challenges included new prescibing rules being enforced by the Royal College, changing practice management systems, and working around major theatre rennovations. The new theatre/prep is looking amazing, and I will be sharing some photos with you very very soon!
Highlights included getting married, being able to get away for an amazing honeymoon and becoming an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine. We took on a second Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) in December, and have a third Veterinary Surgeon starting in April!
We are rennoavting our consult rooms and dispensary later in the month and then I am DONE π I am hoping to do an open day later in the summer, to finally show you all the hard work we have put into the building.
It's been a busy year, a challenging year, but also a very rewarding one. As we grow, so does all the admin that comes with business ownership but I promise if you don't always see me I am beavering away behind the scenes somewhere.
Thank you all for your continued support, it's what makes spending a rainy Saturday afternoon doing paperwork all worth it β€οΈ
Dreamies make everything better π

And just like that, we close the door on our theatre. We created this room nearly 6 years ago from the old calf pens and lambing room, and it has served us incredibly well until now. It's just a room, but when I think how many animals it has helped in that time... Maybe it's something more.
As we grow and we upgrade our facilities and services, it has created a need for something different, and I can't wait to share that with you all !
Please bear with us and the disruption this may cause over the next 4-6 weeks...it will be worth it in the end.

Should I castrate my dog?
The answer is far more nuanced than it used to be.
Pros:
1. May stop some roaming behaviour (if truly picking up scent of bitches on heat...it won't fix other recall issues!)
2. May stop some testosterone driven behaviour e.g. humping, spray marking (again, there are lots of other reasons these may happen)
3. Reduces the risk of some prostate disease
4. Prevents testicular cancer
5. Population control
Cons:
1. Some suggestions that may increase the risk of prostate cancer
2. Increased risk of joint disease if done too early in some breeds
3. Increased risk of some fear based behaviour if done too early
Confused? That's because there isn't a blanket yes or no, the decision should be made on a dog by dog basis. There are also other shorter term options besides surgery that may be appropriate to try first in a small minority of cases.
Speak to us if you have any questions about neutering your dog π
Time to #wearitpink at the Malthouse π We have donated to @breastcancernow and hopefully put a smile on a few faces with this reel.

There is nothing quite as satisfying in the Veterinary profession as cutting into an abscess. Here is an abscess in a foot we lanced, explored, and flushed on friday.

Found Staffie female, very friendly no collar , has chip but not registered. Found in minsterley.
ZEUS π
Zeus came to us from Hafren Veterinary Group - Small animal Wednesday evening as an emergency as he had a cows ear firmly lodged in his oesophagus. MSM Vets lent us some tools to help with this tricky case and we were able to dislodge the offending object in pieces. This was an excellent example of veterinary practices pooling together their tools and knowledge to do the best for our patients. We are so pleased to see Zeus doing so well π
