Callie might just be the most photogenic little sausage ever! 😍✨

I had such a great consultation with Callie’s owner yesterday—it felt truly collaborative. We put together a veterinary care plan she felt confident in, bonded over our shared love of New Zealand, and wrapped up with some heartwarming feedback about the practice.

She told me we’ve got it ‘just right’—the perfect blend of modern technology and that warm, small-team feel. Music to my ears! 🎶🐾

We Absolutely Love Dogs!

Just putting that out there! Because we care so much about their well-being, we've decided that our OPEN DAY tomorrow will be a *DOG-FREE EVENT*.

Did you know it takes 18 positive experiences for a dog to forget a single negative one? With our narrow waiting room and lots of unfamiliar dogs in one space, it could lead to stressful situations—and the last thing we want is for any pup to have a bad experience at the vet!

We hope you understand and appreciate our decision.

See you all tomorrow!

We decided as a team that it would be nice to have staff pets for these portraits, to keep on brand with our personal community feel. Can you guess who belongs to who?

At Malthouse Vets, we take our responsibility not only for the health of our patients but also for the broader challenges in both animal and human health. One of the most pressing issues we face as a species is antibiotic resistance, and we all have a role to play in combating it! If left unchecked, infections that were once easily treatable could become life-threatening for both us and our pets.

Antibiotics are not harmless—they can disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, leading to unintended health consequences.

As a result, we may no longer prescribe antibiotics in cases where we once would have. This video explains why, and why, in some instances, the best treatment is no treatment at all. I believe in open, informed discussions between vets and pet owners, and I will always take the time to explain why I may choose not to prescribe antibiotics for your pet—because ultimately, it’s in their best interest (and potentially yours too).

What can you do?

✅ Understand that antibiotics aren’t always the answer—they won’t help with conditions like vomiting, diarrhea, or sneezing. Avoid pressuring for them.
✅ Follow the prescribed treatment correctly—if antibiotics are necessary, always complete the full course as directed.
✅ Dispose of unused antibiotics safely—bring any leftovers back to us for proper disposal.

Together, we can make a difference.

Lunchtime emergency! Ned came in after eating two grapes—something that can be highly toxic to dogs and lead to Acute Kidney Injury. We quickly ran blood tests to check his baseline levels, induced vomiting (spot the guilty evidence in the last picture!), and prescribed activated charcoal to absorb any remaining toxins. To help him feel better, he also received an anti-sickness injection. Wishing Ned a speedy recovery! 💗

Bonus points to Katie for holding his ears back and Ned for aiming his vomit into the provided litter tray 😀

Our practice ethos of Community and Connection is about ourselves, clients and pets....but it also extends to fellow local businesses.

Also.....any excuse for food, right 😅

HI.

Whether you’re new to this page or have been with us for a while, I thought it was time to reintroduce myself!

I’m Natalie – Veterinary Surgeon and proud owner of Malthouse Vets. I took over the practice in 2017 and have since poured my heart into making it the best experience possible for both you and your pets. I've invested in myself to become an Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Medicine and, of course, in our wonderful Grade II listed building. This means we can provide top-quality veterinary care in a beautifully renovated, characterful building that’s full of history.

Before Malthouse, I worked at a fast-paced practice where consultations were rushed, and I rarely had time to connect with clients and their pets. As a naturally chatty person, I found it frustrating not being able to build those relationships and soon realised it wasn't for me. When I found Malthouse, I knew it was different. Here, we take the time to get to know you and your pets, creating a welcoming and personal experience. That’s what makes this practice so special to me.

Getting to know my clients and their pets is one of the best parts of what I do—but I also think it’s just as important that you know me! So, here are a few fun facts:
🎷 I play the saxophone
🐻 I have a (healthy?) obsession with bears
🏃‍♀️ I love trail running and craft ale – though not at the same time!

I’d love to catch up with familiar faces and welcome new ones too, so why not come along to our Open Day on Saturday, 29th March at 11 AM? Whether you’ve been with us for years or are just getting to know us, it’s a great chance to stop by, say hello, and see what makes Malthouse so special.

Let me know in the comments if you’ll be popping in for the Open Day – looking forwards to catching up with you all over a 'proper' cup of Yorkshire Tea and some cake ☕️🎂

✨ Meet Bruce! ✨

Bruce came to us with a sore ear, so we took a sample and ran it through our state-of-the-art Imagyst machine. The results? Malassezia, a type of yeast that’s normally found on the skin but can cause problems when it overgrows.

We performed an ear flush under GA, and Bruce soaked up lots of post-procedure cuddles from Veterinary Nurse Natalie and Nursing Assistant Katie! ❤️

He’s now on antifungal and steroid drops, and we’ll check in on him in two weeks.

‼️ Ear infections are often a sign of an underlying issue, like allergies. The best way to get a lasting result? Identifying and addressing the root cause while keeping up with good ear care—under your vet’s guidance!

I always tell my clients at the start of this journey: Make sure you like me, because we’ll be seeing a lot of each other!
