Microchipping your pet is a simple yet effective way to give you peace of mind if your feline friend ever gets lost. The unique ID number associated with the microchip can be scanned by animal shelters, veterinarians, and other organisations, making it easier to reunite pets with their owners.

And if that wasn't enough of a reason to get them microchipped, here's some more:

😺 It's a permanent form of identification that won't fall off or fade over time

😺 It will become a legal requirement from Monday 10 June 2024.

😺 It can help prove ownership in case of a dispute

Whether you’re in a relationship or not, don’t forget about your true significant others this Valentine’s Day—your pets!

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's important to keep in mind that traditional gifts such as chocolates, flowers, wine, and candlelit dinners can pose some potential threat to your feline friends and canine companions.

Take a moment to recognise some of the risks that come with the celebration and gifting around Valentine's Day so that you can enjoy it without any emergency trips to the vet.

Here's a list of items to keep away from our pets:

🍫 Chocolate can be toxic to cats and dogs, as their bodies cannot properly digest it. Dark chocolate, in particular, contains a high amount of theobromine, which is toxic to pets.

🌹 While roses are beautiful, they can cause stomach upset and bowel obstruction if ingested.

💮Lilies are highly toxic to cats. Even the ingestion of a petal, leaf, pollen, or water that has held a lily can lead to fatal kidney failure.

🍷 Alcohol can cause major problems for pets, even in small quantities.

🕯️ Be careful when lighting candles around your pets, as they may accidentally knock them over or get hurt by the flames or hot wax.

🎁 Gift wraps and trimmings may seem like toys to your pets, but if swallowed, they can cause severe stomach problems like vomiting, diarrhoea, and intestinal blockages.

Please can we remind clients to contact your chosen practice at least 48 hours in advance when requesting any repeat prescription medications, including your regular prescription of parasiticide (flea and worming) treatment.

This is to ensure the medication is ready on collection, preventing our clients from having a wasted journey.

🐶😺 It's no secret that our pets love to indulge in human treats, but not all foods and drinks are safe for them. In fact, some everyday items can be quite dangerous to our beloved pets.

To keep your pet healthy and happy, it's important to know which foods to avoid. Don't be tempted by their adorable 'puppy dog' and 'cat eyes'. 😻

Here are some of the most hazardous foods to watch out for, but keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list.

If you have an older dog, you might notice that their movement becomes increasingly difficult and painful. This could be due to osteoarthritis, also known as arthritis, which causes joint inflammation and discomfort. While arthritis is commonly associated with hips, elbows, and knees, it can affect any joint.

Here are some signs to look for:

⚠️ Reluctance to play, jump, or climb stairs

Getting your cat microchipped is a simple and effective way to ensure their safety. A microchip is a small implant containing your cat's information, such as their name, contact details, and medical history. It is inserted under their skin and can be scanned by a veterinarian or animal shelter if they ever get lost or stolen.

Here are some reasons why you should make it your new year's resolution to get your cat microchipped and check their chip:

😺 On Monday 10 June 2024, it will become compulsory for all cats to be microchipped.

😺Microchipping is a permanent form of identification that cannot be lost or removed, unlike collars or tags that can fall off or be removed.

😺It increases the chances of your cat reuniting with you if they go missing or are stolen, as shelters and vets will scan for a microchip during intake procedures.

😺It provides peace of mind for you, knowing that your cat's information is readily available if they are ever found.

⚠️ Do you know the dangers of antifreeze for both our pets and wildlife?

When maintaining your vehicle, it is important to remember that some liquids can be hazardous to your pet and wildlife, such as spilt car wash liquid and antifreeze.

🐶😺🐦Antifreeze is a common ingredient in many de-icing products and is highly poisonous if consumed by dogs, cats and birds. To make matters worse, animals can find the taste of antifreeze enjoyable, so they can lick areas that have been treated and poison themselves.

Signs of poisoning can include being quiet or lethargic, vomiting, instability, and muscle twitching through to seizures and collapse. Urgent attention is very important as the results can often be fatal.

Top tips to keep your pet and wildlife safe:
✔️ Do not add antifreeze to outdoor water sources like bird baths, water features and fountains
✔️ Always remember to keep bottles sealed and out of reach of your pet
✔️ Ensure any spillages are cleaned up immediately and thoroughly, and keep your pet away from the soiled area
✔️ Dispose of used containers correctly
✔️ Do not leave your pet unattended in areas which contain chemicals.
✔️ During walks, your pet's feet, legs, or belly may pick up salt and grit, irritating their skin. Wash your pet's paws and undercarriage if they come into contact with salt and grit.
✔️Always check in and under your car before departing. Cats shelter under cars when it is cold and sit or even climb inside the bonnet to keep warm.

PRESENTS UNDER THE TREE 🎁

Although it's tradition to place Christmas gifts under the tree, this can make them more accessible to curious canines searching for something to chew or eat, so when placing presents under the tree, it's important to keep your pets in mind and to consider... what is it wrapped with, and what's in it?

Like tinsel, if ribbon is ingested, it can cause a life-threatening intestinal blockage. And if what is inside the package is deliciously tempting, it is best to err on the side of caution and keep it out of the reach of pets.

Be wary of leaving drinks where pets can easily access them, and be aware of the signs of ethanol intoxication, which include:

⚠️ Disorientation
⚠️ Drowsiness
