Sound advice from our sister company K9 Scent & Search UK

It is 4.17am, I have been up about half an hour which is early even for me, already the temperatures in my house are around 22 degrees.

Today is going to be scorchingly hot!

Be sure to get up and get out with your dogs as early as you can and remember, no dog ever died from missing one walk but many have for being walked in the heat.

Provide lots of fresh water.

Cool mats or damp towels for your dogs to lie on.

Have fans running.

If you have to travel with your dog today for any reason be sure that the airconditioning in the car actually reaches where the dogs are travelling,

If you are lucky enough to be at home with your dogs today or if you work and have a dog door to the garden, make sure you create as much shade as you can.

Enjoy the sun, enjoy the summer but be very mindful that heatstroke in dogs is a killer and can strike very quickly.

(And yes this is an AI generated picture because there is no way my dogs would sit still in a pool long enough to get a photo)

What are the essential life skills you think your puppy or dog needs?

I will go first ....

A reliable recall

Without a recall your dogs life is not only restricted out on walks but every outing becomes a risk if your dog won't come when called.

What if you drop their lead or they slip their collar?

What if they dart out the front door or jump out of the car before you have hold of them?

Just to name a few scenarios that need your dog to respond to their recall word and come back to you as quickly as they can.

What else do you think is essential?

Heatstroke in dogs ☀️🐶

Dogs can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes. Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their skin and so they rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature and keep cool. Imagine wearing a thick winter coat on a hot summer’s day and you’ll understand why dogs succumb to heatstroke so easily.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs include collapse, excessive panting, and dribbling.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from the condition, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat with cool - not freezing - water, and contact your vet immediately.

Once a dog shows signs of heatstroke the damage is often already done, which is why it’s so important to prevent it.

*How to keep a dog cool and prevent heatstroke*

•Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times, ideally a large bowl filled to the brim. •Carry water and a bowl with you on walks.
•On hot days, walk your dog during the cooler parts of the day, in the early morning and late evening
•Watch your pet for signs of over-heating, including heavy panting and loss of energy. If you recognise these signs when on a walk, stop, find a shady spot and give your dog water.
•Never leave your dog (or any pet) alone in a car, even with the windows open
•Make cooling tasty treats by making ice cubes with your dog’s favourite food inside or stuff a Kong and pop it in the freezer
•Be particularly careful with short nosed dogs such as bull breeds, boxers, pugs, older dogs, and those that are overweight. These dogs can get heatstroke simply by running around.

As true today as it was when we first posted this.

The weather is going to be hot, summer has finally arrived so extra caution is needed for exercising your dogs.

The best time is early morning before the temperatures start to rise and everything starts to absorb the heat

Make sure you have water with you if you are out and about

Don't leave your dogs in your cars unless they are specifically designed - (my van has a seperate fan and air con system for my dogs but I still don't leave them for long unattended)

Be safe and be aware that heatstroke is a killer, it won't just make them feel a bit unwell, by the time you recognise the symptoms it is usually too late.

Well summer has hit and this week it is hitting hard with high temperatures and whilst for some, like me who loves the heat, the dogs do not.
Heat stroke is a killer in dogs, it's not just about them being too warm it is about them suffering damage to their internal organs, their brain and dying.
So get them out early, make sure they have plenty of water and cool places to lie down. The evenings unless you go really late tend to still be too warm so check the temperature.

No dog died from missing one walk.
