🌟My dog won't pay attention!!!🌟

Now I hear this all the time, it's one of the struggles for many parents of high energy or busy dogs.

It can feel frustrating and overwhelming when working on any skills out of the house, but especially recall.

Start working hard on disengagement, which starts with investing in engagement. These games are fun to teach and also help with so many other skills important for Safe and enjoyable adventures.

My other Top Tip is to help your dog develop skills of Calmness. Now this is easier said than done and most definitely doesn't happen over night.

Do you feel confident letting your dog off lead?

🌟Emotional Regulation🌟

When it comes to Calmness it very often requires emotional regulation.

For us yesterday, we saw lots of 🐮 it's not his first time but it doesn't mean he's a pro by any stretch of the imagination.

Diggory has a small bucket, it is definitely getting bigger, but sometimes it shrinks back down, but that's fine, I'm there for him, I can help him out and see that bucket empty in those moment 😉

It sometimes means the walk slows down, there's time to process and take in his surroundings without the pressure to do anything.

It sometimes means moving past quickly to get it over with....

It sometimes means we can engage and work in that moment to help build confidence in those surroundings.

How do I know what and when?

Feeling connected by reading his emotions, not just body language but all those subtle mechanics you know exactly how to help your pup out in the moment.

For members this month we are Diving Deep into all things to help our dogs with emotion regulation and the Success to Settle.

Do something NOW, don't wait till they've practised

🐾Ignoring you

🐾Buggering off to find fun

🐾Being far away from you

It's not safe. It's not fair to others if your dog runs up to them, and it's not fun worrying where they are....

People focus on recall for taking your dog off Lead, which of course is always a priority but let's not forget all the other things, like Disengagement.

Teach an awesome response to Disengage from any distraction and it can keep your dog safe from buggering off.

🌟Adventures with your Dog 🌟

Nobody tells you this....

It's bloody hard work.... there I've said it, no rose tinted glasses around here.

With a high energy dog, walking past LIVESTOCK especially this time of year here in the UK, it can be really testing on your dogs skill set and on your emotional resilience after being pulled so much. No adventure is nice when you're both not enjoying parts or all of it.

Nobody tells you that there is a rich tapesty of skills required to help a high energy dog go for a stroll in the county, especially if you are ONLY working on teaching your dog Loose Lead Walking....

There is so much more going on.

Be mindful to work on all aspects of skills to cope with what your adventures may involve.

Training a skills like loose lead walking for high energy dogs will never be enough for those more sensitive to their environment.

There is nothing better than getting out together with your Dog and even better if your arm is still it's socket because your dog can cope and able to keep their cool.

💪 Super proud 💪

Cool, Calm and Confident around water..... this may not seem like a big deal but for a Lagotto Romagnolo, an Italian Water Dog, his genetics can drive a certain emotion sky rocketing.... as a gun dog his genetics and breed characteristics influence how he feels and, in turn, drive him to pursue certain activities..... so we've worked hard on there being a time and place for such emotions and pursuing activities that meet all those needs.

You can't stop those internal drivers..... but we can create an understanding of when and where those activities take place!

Good work, little one. I'm super proud of you.
