An interesting infographic that popped up on my FB today - not sure I'd ever want to see green or brown yolks, or even a very pale yolk myself. We tend to get golden or orange yolks from our girls - all offered the same feed but not all eat everything on offer.

Lots of eggs available 🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🍳🥚🥚🥚🥚
£2 per half dozen
£3.80 per dozen
£9 per tray of 30

What an absolutely atrocious day! I hope everyone else has managed to not get blown away or washed away! We're debating whether we should turn our fields into swimming pools right now😳

We have lots of things happening here at Western Farm with hens laying a regular lot of lovely rich yolked eggs while we plan their Spring/summer housing needs for us to be able to free-range them.

All our hens are now on a fully soya-free diet, with their layers pellets, mixed corn and of course fresh veg (bought specifically for them, not from our own kitchen) all now, happily, free from all soya products which we feel makes them an even healthier choice.

With lots of eggs available we hope that some of you might like to come and buy our tasty fresh eggs. See captions on photos for more info :)

It seems we're not allowed to sell eggs via marketplace so if you would like to help me out and share this page far and wide I'd be super grateful🙏❤️😘.

We have almost 4 full trays ready to go... That's 112 eggs in total.

Tasty, colourful... Outside and in... And far fresher than any supermarket eggs will ever be 😋🐔🥚🥚😋😋

When we said we'd get a larger flock of hens to give others an opportunity to enjoy the kind of fresh eggs that we ourselves have for some years, I didn't envision 5am starts to try and beat the morning nestbox rush so that I could ensure the nestbox trays were clean😲🥱😴
Having said that, there is something immensely satisfying and oddly enjoyable about those early starts, ensuring our girls have a clean nest to lay in every morning. We're getting to see the different characters emerging with individual birds; one hen was insistent she couldn't leave the nestbox yesterday morning in all the time that it took me to clean the other 9 trays so I cleaned as best I could around her. She was in residence again this morning🐔 and had a lot to say when I eventually ousted her once I knew she'd laid her egg!

In the photo you can see there's something of a pileup going on in the left-hand box - I think there were 2 inside and the one at the front was trying to make space to join them too 😂, even though there were another 5 boxes above her all vacant!!

At present the nestboxes are not in their final resting place which is part of the reason why they need so much cleaning - and they don't yet have anything to stop the girls sleeping in them at night - it's on our list of tasks to ensure this is sorted sooner rather than later!!

Eggs!

If you've been following us before you may notice the change to our page name - this is due to difficulties setting up a separate page specifically for our very new venture into eggs! So, we are all one and the same I've amended the page to reflect not just our Hen Hotels which are still available, but our farming activities in general - including our flock of 100 laying hens of mixed breeds and ages (some being ex-commercial hybrids) and a smaller flock of 19ish hens who're kept on a soya-free feed to provide eggs for folks like me who cannot tolerate eggs from hens fed on a soya-based diet.

If you'd like some beautiful, fresh, locally produced eggs please get in touch to make sure we've got them available before you visit :)

Please do keep following and sharing as we not only carry on our Hotel activities, but also post about our farming in general :)

Today was hen house cleaning and run feeding station upgrading jobs! Ignore the mucky tray, I didn't get close to cleaning the run itself today - that can be a wet weather job, today I needed to make the most of the lack of rain to clean the houses and the bases!

I added a mesh frame to my feed-station to enable the Wise feeder to be easily lifted off and taken out of the run at night, making it less of a temptation for Roland and his cronies.
The feed-station is hinged and opens from the outside of the run enabling me to service feeders and water drinkers without needing to enter the run, except to clean and put fresh bedding in - thus helping to improve biosecurity, particularly with the ever-present threat of avian flu over the winter months.
The mesh means that the feeder height can be adjusted depending on the size of hens visiting - catering for all from the smallest bantams to the larger girls who also come and stay.
None too keen on these short days... ran out of daylight to get the rest of the job finished!!
Feed station number 2 is all-but ready to install on Rory's Retreat, hopefully tomorrow, then I'll be able to get on and do the run cleaning...

One set of hens were collected last night, while I then had a mad rush to make the next run ready for new arrivals today. I didn't quite complete my new feeding station setup to enable external servicing of runs during winter flockdowns to help with ensuring best possible biosecurity, but have all the bits in place ready for the next time that run is available!! Or, I may just put it on to the other run which also needs the feeding station adding.

My latest arrivals are gorgeous, I have hen envy 😍🤣

After a last minute rush and much appreciated help from Dad Rosie's Roost was almost ready for my latest arrivals last night. I don't like being so disorganised but family matters have taken up too much time recently.

While this page is predominantly about hens, it would be rude not to share these 2 super cute photos of our most recent born calf - Bugle and with his mother Daisy, as taken by my talented photographer daughter Freya Smith Photography last week.

It's amazing just how much time it takes to deep clean a hen house and run between feathery guests!!
1 - Remove all bedding from house and run
2 - Vacuum the bits that the yard broom and shovel can't get to!
3 - Jet wash the stubborn pieces of muck
4 - Liberally spray everything with disinfectant and allow to dry
5 - Bring in all feeders/waterers and put through dishwasher.
Half a day gone on this task today!! But, it's so satisfying seeing it come up lovely and clean so it's well worth the effort

It's not often that all hens at Ruffles are the same colour and similar types!!

Today we've got my girls diving into their feed, returnee visitors also diving straight into their feed just after being released from their travel crate and another group of ex-comms who're with me until Saturday, just after they were let out this morning.

It's great to see all my currently available runs full of chooks - I always love hearing their happy chuckles as they go about their day

All Change at Ruffles Platform today - clean down of one vacated hen house (run to be done tomorrow) and the bases from occupied hen houses where I have spare bases that I swap over when doing a clean out - then clean these in one go.
Almost ready for more hens coming in soon.

Daisy's Den is finally fully roofed and starting to be clad with weldmesh - a chance roll we bought last year at a show has happened to be enough to go around the whole run once so I'm very pleased with that! The top half of the run will be completed with reused weldmesh that's good enough, but not so great to use at base level.
We're trying out potato sack ties as an alternative to zip ties that either go brittle or get chewed by unhelpful goats. Hoping they may last a little better, but we shall see.
