A lovely little bit of early morning habituation with Brewer π Although he can't freely walk on public ground for the next 4 weeks, it's really important to get our puppies used to all sorts of environments when we can. I already have this dog pushchair for my 10 year old disabled French Bulldog but it's also a fantastic tool for Brewer to get him out and about βΊοΈ He's been down Weston Shore, to a busy pub garden, and also to 3 family members gardens to socialise with their fully vaccinated dogs all in the last 5 days π«Ά The aim is to safely get him used to all different sights, sounds and situations before he's allowed to fully explore our world π
Why do dogs kick? π€
When dogs kick or 'backwards dig' the ground, it stimulates scent glands in their feet. This is known as 'scent marking', meaning they're naturally spreading pheromones π They often do this to keep other dogs or animals away or to let their presence be known in that area π΅ββοΈ
As I'm sure many of you are aware, some dogs only kick out after going to the toilet which can often be hazardous π© This is because they also have scent glands either side of their bottoms as well, commonly referred to as 'anal glands'π
Another form of scent marking is when dogs rub their faces along the floor as demonstrated by Archie at the start of the video πΉ As well as having scent glands in their feet and bottoms, dogs also have scent glands in their faces too π
I love Canine body language and it's always fascinating watching your dogs do such simple things and being able to understand why they do them π€©

Archie on a solo walk with me (Buddiepet Dog Walker Southampton)πΆββοΈ Following on from my post about this young man being my reactivity case study π
On this particular walk Archie and I came accross a grass cutting man on a machine and a group of people and their dogs - both of which were huge triggers for his reactive behaviour on their own, nevermind all happening at once π Although not for every dog, Archie finds a clicker combined with verbal praise and food to be very rewarding π If you look closely you'll see that as soon as I reward, he instantly goes back to looking at his past triggers as if to say 'If I look at them calmly and silently, Paige will reward me' π
Good work Archie ππΎ
