Derrington Millennium Green is a 12 acre site on the West side of Stafford, Staffordshire, UK.

JANUARY WORK PARTY UPDATE:

A busy morning in the cold at our first volunteer work party of 2025.

Work completed included pruning of the fruit trees in the orchard and removing the nut trees that have self set during the autumn months. We also cut some ivy from some of the trees, pruneed back the willow bushes by the pond, and worked to complete some benches the voulenteers have been commisioned to make.

As always, it was good to see so many volunteers chipping in and having fun. Big thanks to all who joined us, We certainly needed our post work coffee today as it was chilly out there after the last week of freezing weather.

Our volunteer work parties take place on the second Sunday of each month. Everyone is welcome to come and join us, either to work maintaining our wonderful green space, just for a chat or to visit our information centre. There is also tea, coffee, homemade cake and always a good natter afterwards.

The next work party event will take place on the 09th February 2025.

JANUARY VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY 12/01/25:

Our first volunteer work-party of the new year will take place this coming Sunday - 12th January 2025, and we have plenty of work to do to achieve the projects we have planned for this year.

If you are interested in joining us, getting some fresh air and exercise and of course, a cup of tea / coffee and a sausage roll afterwards please come along. It would be great to see you and everyone is welcome.

Our volunteer work-parties help us to maintain and look after the space. We start work at about 10:00am, but volunteers will be at the tool store from 9.30am.

The information centre will also be open for anyone who wants to stop by and chat or look at the selection of wildflower seeds, volunteer built, benches, bird boxes and tables we have for sale. We also still have a few 2025 calanders available.

A plesent but misty morning saw a fantastic turn out for our annual today’s Walking Treasure Hunt.

It was great to see so many of you joining in and having fun and taking on both the childrens and adults hunt, and joining us for chocolates, coffee and mulled wine by the fire in the tool shed at the end of the trail.

A big thanks to the trustees and volunteers for organising and running the event, and of course to everyone who joined us and took part in the fun.

We wish all our visitors, and volunteers a happy new year and look forward to seeing you in 2025.

With the Festive period fast approaching (17 days and counting), The Derrington Millennium Green Trust would like to say thank you, and wish all our volunteers, supporters, friends and visitors a relaxing and Merry Christmas.

Our annual Christmas meal for volunteers and friends took place in the tool shed yesterday afternoon, and was a great opportunity for everyone to drink a toast to all the hard work we have done in the last year. A real celebration of community - with food, jokes and games (all donated by the volunteers, and refereed by quiz master Mike). A fabulous time full of laughs and merriment was had by all.

The next event in our calendar will be the pre-New Year’s Walking Treasure Hunt which we are planning for Saturday 28th December – we will be posting more details about this soon so please keep an eye out.

We also still have plenty of 2025 calendars (the perfect Christmas gift for nature lovers) and Christmas cards available so if you are needing any for last minute prezzies message us directly or pop down to the tool shed on the green to pick some up.

We had a great time at St Matthew's Church, Derrington for the Advent Fayre today .... It was really busy and so great to see so many people supporting the local community.

We still have plenty of 2025 calendars and Christmas cards available so if you are needing any message us directly or pop down to the tool shed on the green.

Next Saturday (30th November) you can find us alongside a variety of other local groups and businesses at the Derrington Advent Fayre at St Matthew's Church Derrington between 1pm and 3pm.

We will be selling a range of products perfect for the festive season, including:

Christmas cards
Note-let Cards
2025 Calendars
Wildflower seeds from our meadows
Bird boxes, Bird Tables and Bat boxes handmade by our talented volunteers.

All the money we make goes back in to the Millennium Green, so come down to see us and help support us to maintain and look after our wonderful green space.

We were treated with a gorgeous Autumn morning for the final volunteer work party of 2024.

Our team of volunteers were busy cutting back the vegetation around the Historic Sheep Dip, cleaning and repairing broken signs on site, and working to plant up the newly refurbished W I Herb Garden with a range of herbs and bulbs ready for next year, and also bagging up our own wildflower seeds, which we will have for sale alongside calendars and cards at local events including the Church Bazar on 30th November at St Matthews Church.
As usual it was good to see so many volunteers, who helped us to complete all the work we had hoped to achieve before we take a well earned Christmas break in December, ready for the new year.

NOVEMBER VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY 10/10/24:

Our last volunteer work-party of 2024 will take place this coming Sunday - 10th November 2024 , and we have plenty to do before we take a well earned break in December to celebrate our achievements over the past 12 months.

If you are interested in joining us, getting some fresh air and exercise and of course, a cup of tea / coffee and a sausage roll afterwards please come along. It would be great to see you and everyone is welcome.

Our volunteer work-parties help us to maintain and look after the space. We start work at about 10:00am, but volunteers will be at the tool store from 9.30am.

work we want to focus on this month will include:

Planting up the refurbished W I Herb Garden.
Pruning back the Willow Bushes in by the pond.
Cutting back the vegetation around the Historic Sheep Dip, by the car park (so wellies will be needed).
End of Season Strimming and Cutting Back.
Sign Cleaning.
Litter Picking.

The information centre will also be open for anyone who wants to stop by and chat or look at the selection of volunteer built, made to order benches, bird boxes and tables we have for sale.

Another productive day today at our October volunteer work party.

The chilly weather has started to come in, but that didn’t stop our volunteers laying more hard standing path both at the entrance to the rear wetland fields (which is now complete), but also in the entrance to the W.I Herb and flower garden, we also worked to re-lay the stone on the kissing gate entrance to the new field all of which will help to make areas more acessable to everyone in the wetter winter months.

As usual it was good to see so many volunteers, including some new faces who helped us to complete all the work we had hoped to achieve.

OCTOBER VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY 13/10/24:

Our October volunteer work-party will take place this coming Sunday - 13th October 2024.

Our volunteer work-parties help us to maintain and look after the space. We start work at about 10:00am, but volunteers will be at the tool store from 9.30am.

This month we will be working to:

Finish laying the new hard standing surface onto the new land.
Lay some hard standing surface on the approach to the WI Herb Garden.
Continue the refurbishment of the WI Herb Garden.
Do some vegetation Control on the Lane leading to the Millennium Green, and Himalayan Balsam control by the Streams.

We're all set up at Derrington Village Hall for their craft fair today . Selling a range of cards, bird boxes and even our new hedgehog houses🦔

Please come down and see us between 10 am and 3 pm , all the money we make will go back into our future projects.

Lots of other great craft stalls to see and tea and coffee too.

A very wet, but highly productive September volunteer work party saw volunteers starting to lay a hard standing path on the entrance to the rear wetland fields which will help to make this section on the green more accessable to everyone in the wetter winter months.

We also prepared and added gravel to the the final two sections of the WI Herb and Flower Garden. This completes the first stage of our re-generation of this area, ready for planting later in the year. If you want to help us with this project we will be looking for donations of plants in the coming months (details regarding this are on signs onsite and have been posted to facebook).

As usual we couldn’t have done as much as we did without serious people power, so it was good to see so many volunteers, including some new faces who took on the workload and were in good spirits despite the rain.

The summer weather really came out for our August volunteer work party and really helped us with the important job of brushing and harvesting the seeds from our wildflower meadows. There is still a little work to do next week, and we will have seed for sale in the near future, so keep your eyes out for details regarding this here and on signage within the Green.

Volunteers also made more progress on the WI Herb and Flower Garden re-generation project, preparing another two sections of the ground with w**d control and adding gravel to the four sections completed thus far.

This was a big workload on a hot day, and we couldn’t have done as much as we did without serious people power, so it was good to see so many volunteers, including some new faces from the community and special mention must also go to our young volunteers who really got stuck in with stone raking and seed sorting (as well as having great fun playing together).

AUGUST VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY 11/08/24:

As part of our volunteer work party on August 11th 2024 we will be working to harvest our wild flower meadows and process the seeds ready for use in other projects. We will also look to sell the seed later in the year to fund future work and maintenance of the green.

This is a big job and more hands make lighter work, so we are asking for as many people as are able to join in and help out during the event. Everyone volunteering will also be able to take some seeds away with them to plant in their own garden, helping to protect our bees and pollinators.

We start work at about 10:00am (meeting at the Tool shed on the green at around 9:30am) and there is always a hot drink and a sausage roll or cake afterwards

We had a great turn out for last night’s Annual General Meeting, and it was great to see so many of our volunteers and regular supporters, as well as some new faces.

The meeting included a presentation of wat has been another busy and successful period for the Derrington Millennium Green Trust and discussed the progress we have made with projects from June 23 to June 24 and outline our plans to continue to maintain, evolve and develop the green for the future.

As always, the trustees are really grateful for all the support we receive, from everyone that volunteers and of course the local community. Without your valuable contribution of time, money and energy we would not have been able to achieve so much.

Here’s to another prosperous and successful year in 2024-25

JULY WORK PARTY UPDATE:

Warm and muggy weather this morning saw us begin the regeneration of the WI Herb and Flower Garden. Volunteers dug over two of the six sections and fitted a w**d control membrane ready for gravel and replanting. This will be a continuing project over the coming months to help make the garden more manageable and lower maintenance.

There will be opportunity to sponsor segments of the garden and get involved with the planting and ongoing maintenance, so keep an eye out for more information about this in the near future.

Wanting a way to take in a little exercise and fresh air during the Festive Period? Then join in with our Walking Treasure Hunt on Thursday December 28th between 11am and 1pm. This is a free event and fun for all the family. The route and clues can be collected from Tool Store on the Millennium Green. Really busy August Volunteer Work Party Tomorrow - Please come down and help if you can......

We will be hosting a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday (April 9th 2023) between 11am - 2pm. The hunt will start at the tool store. Those taking part will follow a given route to gather a number of clues and solve a word puzzle to find the hidden eggs. Everyone is welcome, so please come along and have some Easter fun. Please note - There will be a limited number of eggs to find, so a first come first served basis will apply.
