Sometimes, very occasionally, everything comes together nicely at Lowveld. Those days are few and far between, when there are no emergencies, sudden illnesses, other crises, and generally everything just goes well. Today was one of those days 😀.
The hens in our 2 quarantine pens are all doing well, settling nicely and learning our routine.
A hen who recently had a prolapse, has recovered remarkably well after treatment, and she went outside to enjoy the nice weather for the first time this afternoon. I’m so pleased and relieved for her. We just have to build up her strength now, ready to have an implant to make sure her body has lots more time to rest and heal, without the worry of more egg issues.
Lacey turkey has also been under the weather recently with a bout of diarrhoea, but a change of antibiotics seems to have done the trick, and she was much improved this morning, enjoying her breakfast for the first time this week. She enjoyed some grapes too this afternoon which Rob made a special trip to Aldi for.
Sally turkey has been having a really heavy moult, and i have been keeping her separate from the other turkeys for a fortnight to make sure she gets plenty of good food without competition from the others. It’s so sweet that she and housemate Dorothy have kept in constant communication with each other while they’ve been separated, with lots of clucks purrs and yelps 🥰 Sally is now looking splendid again.
We let a group of 7 hens out of their perimeter enclosure for the first time since they arrived back in the summer, and they joined a mixed flock of 40 something hens in our main area, where they will have a choice of numerous sheds and eglus at night. They were very poorly on arrival, but they are now fit and well, and ready to join the others under the supervision of Teddy cockerel. Teddy was a superstar, making sure everything went smoothly and there was no squabbling with the existing flock in that area. He is such an asset where intro’s are concerned.
Surprisingly, two groups of ducks who are together during the day, but choose to sleep separately in two different duck houses at night, shocked me this evening, when they all went into one house together by choice 😀. I wonder why, all of a sudden!
Finally we have received two heavy parcels from our Amazon Wish List, which reminds me just how much some people must care about our wonderful residents to send them gifts ❤️ Catherine and I shall open them in the morning.
If everything always went so smoothly at Lowveld, it would be a doddle 😂 however, I’m just grateful for a good day today, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow with renewed vigour and a piece of apple cake which Steve has just taken out if his oven and sent me a photo of 😋
Have a great weekend everyone ###
