North Pennine Ferret Welfare & Boarding

North Pennine Ferret Welfare & Boarding The North Pennine Ferret Welfare & Boarding is based in Stanley, County Durham. North Pennine Ferret
(15)

The North Pennine Ferret Welfare & Boarding opened in October 2009 when we moved to County Durham in the North East of England. Barrie has owned ferrets for many years, on and off, since 1952, as pets and working, so it seemed the right way to go due to the fact that there are a lot of unwanted ferrets out there who need a safe haven and more people who want to keep them as pets but need some guidance.

LARGE ENOUGH TO COPE
SMALL ENOUGH TO CARE

We endeavour to cover the whole of the North East of England with our shows and events.

We do so much more than Ferret Welfare & Ferret Boarding for example organising Ferret Education days for Schools, Ferret Racing events for Team building days, Ferret Shows for Village Fetes, Country Fairs and so much more.

We aim to do everything we can to meet your needs and expectations. Our number one priority will always be the welfare & well-being of ferrets.

Ferret Fact Sheet - Background Information The National Ferret Welfare Society

Ferrets are members of the Mustelid family which also includes Weasels, Stoats, Polecats, Martens, Mink, Badgers and Otters.

Ferrets are a domesticated species of Polecat, originally intended for the control of vermin. They may have been kept by the Ancient Egyptians over 3000 years ago and were possibly brought to Britain almost 2000 years ago by the Romans.

Like other members of the Mustelid family, ferrets are lively, fun-loving creatures with a highly developed sense of curiosity. They are not vicious, smelly creatures as most people would lead us to believe; they can make affectionate pets. In America they are one of the most popular pets and are gaining popularity in Britain, where people are recognising the appeal and intelligence of these often misunderstood little animals. With responsible care and gentle handling, ferrets can be excellent family pets and live up to ten years or more.

Breeding Ferrets - So you are thinking about breeding Ferrets?

F A C T! - Female Ferrets DO NOT need to have babies but it is ESSENTIAL that you bring your Jill out of season, as soon as possible, due to the high risk of her suffering from Aplastic Anaemia which is one of the leading causes of death in unspayed female ferrets.

WARNING! - Dangers of Inbreeding Ferrets

EXAMPLE - In 2018, two polecat jill kits (Sadie and Lo**ta), along with their siblings, were seized after their irresponsible owner had been inbreeding his ferrets, resulting in these two being visually impaired. All of their siblings were either put to sleep, or died, due to severe spinal disabilities, as a direct result of inbreeding.

This is not the first, but hopefully the last occasion, that North Pennine Ferret Welfare has had to take care of ferret owners acting without due care in selection of ferret partnerships

Every ferret deserves the best chance in life. Unfortunately it doesn't always work out that way and we find them left wandering in country lanes or handed in to the local vets or RSPCA or even dropped at the rescue door in cardboard boxes. Then there are the ferret owners with too many kits who need to find homes for them.

Here at North Pennine Ferret Welfare we pride ourselves on the way we keep our ferrets happy, loved and healthy.

Procedure for new arrivals at the Rescue

Ferrets arrive at the rescue from various sources for example the RSPCA, surrendered by owners to the rescue, abandoned, ill treated ferrets, ferrets requiring veterinary treatment, pregnant jills &/or jills with a young family of kits from all over the North East & North Yorkshire areas.

On arrival at the rescue, new ferrets are immediately placed into the quarantine unit with fresh bedding, litter, water and food. The reason for this is to prevent any cross contamination of any illnesses or parasites they may have.

Please note for ferret owners contemplating asking NPFW to take in your unwanted animals for whatever reasons you have, consider any and all expense that should incur for visits to our vets are not the responsibility of the welfare. Innoculations, castrations or spay costs need to be forthcoming from owners when handing over, please ask for that information at your enquiry. Many thanks

First Choice Ferret Boarding is a safe place for your ferrets whilst YOU take a well deserved break. We all know, as ferret owners, that it's not always that easy to find someone to take care of our pets whilst we are away.

The aim of the boarding service is to keep your ferrets clean, safe and secure. Your ferret(s) will be cleaned out, fed, watered and exercised regularly in a safe environment.
