Xylitol is a sweetener commonly found in chewing gum and other sweets.
But it’s highly toxic to dogs and can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures, liver failure and even death.
Keep these treats away from your pets!
If they do eat any, seek prompt veterinary attention as the quicker treatment is started, the better the chance of recovery
The VPIS have been monitoring cases of xylitol toxicity, particularly surrounding a new range of chewing gums containing a very high concentration of xylitol, and recently published an article in the Veterinary Record. It appears that this type of formulation causes severe hypoglycaemia more quickly than traditional chewing gums and immediate veterinary assessment and treatment is required.
