Horse Drawn Promotions - Breaking Horses to Harness; Barry Hook

Our aim is to train horses to be safe, confident and happy in any sphere of harness work!

With over 65 years experience, we are recommended by, and have broken horses for, some of the top names in the industry. We break horses of any breed as singles, pairs, tandems, teams and all other multiples for any discipline including commercial, coaching, competition, agricultural, private and pleasure driving. We break horses to drive in soft rubber bits, so they are soft-mouthed and responsiv

e to the aids. We train horses to work confidently at all paces, go through water, drive happily in heavy traffic, work on town and country roads and can also tailor training to suit your chosen discipline, for example working on improving a horse's head carriage for dressage/driving trials or putting a horse in a team for the first time ready for showing/coaching. We also retrain horses that have bolted or have other issues such as being frightened of traffic.

Not Always Plain Sailing! - First Time Driving Out with a Young Cob Filly

Last week we watched Penny being put to for the first time. This week, we're going to be turning her in the yard and leaving out of the gate and heading out on the public highway for the first time.

This is one of those videos that highlights why even the quietest of students need to be kept an eye on at all times - you never know what might happen, especially in the early days of training!

Smokie, who you've seen driving in recent weeks, was also here for some riding training.

This week there's no talking, just the music - so grab yourself a brew and watch how he got on in town, in open spaces, up on the bridge... We think he's made a great Ride and Drive cob and can't wait to see how he gets on at home being his owners' "furry quad bike" for fence checking and their "lift to the local" for evenings out!

We're often asked to show our training 'right from the beginning' and whilst we don't film everything we do, here's an example of how most of our "1st time in Single" experiences go for our students when they're ready to start their driving careers solo, largely down to the groundwork and training we put in beforehand to prepare them for this moment.

It’s not just driving Smokie is here with us for - he’s been doing some riding training too, especially focussing on confidence in open spaces so his owner can use him as a big furry quad to check fences with when he goes back home 😊🐴

Although Choo was also trained for single work when he was first with us, he predominately worked as a pair, especially when he got home and went out competing and training.

Since he will be going on to be driven and ridden solo, we needed to test he had the confidence to make it as a safe, confident and happy horse whilst out single.

Absolutely brilliant drive with Bird and her owner today 😊🐦‍⬛ They had everything thrown at them on the A30 loop and they managed it as a partnership beautifully! And I do mean pretty much “everything!” - not only did we have Bird’s least favourite road hazard (💀🦡🤢) to content with, we had her arch-nemesis the big flat leaves 🥬 along the entire route, more than our fair share of sirens 🚨🚓🚑 and associated silly traffic decision and to top it off, a low flying plane that had made a bit of an error coming in to lane at Chilbolton air strip and barely grazed the hedgerow as it flew over the top of us!
