Does your dog jump up when you have a treat in hand? Does anything to try and sn**ch? Do they jump all over you and make it impossible to clip a lead on them when going out for a walk? Do they bolt to eat any food item you drop on the floor before you have chance to grab it? And shoot out the front door/car as soon as the door opens?
These may be signs you need to work on your dog’s Impulse control.
What is Impulse control?
Impulse control takes part of every day of your dogs’ life. Puppies aren’t born with the natural ability to think before they act, similar to children, this is where we step in, if we weren’t there to help teach children Impulse control, we would end up with an adult with problems such as difficulty to regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviour in the face of temptations and impulse. (e.g., overspending, drinking, drug abuse, unacceptable behaviour)
Ok, I know your dog isn’t going to go overspending anytime soon but they could get themselves into some sticky situations such as bolting out into the road through an open door or rushing to eat an item dropped on the floor that’s not dog friendly.
This is where your Impulse control training comes in, simple day to day tasks that can be added to your daily routine can really help them learn to engage their brain before they participate in a task. Remember Dogs are opportunists, and they do what works best for them in the moment.
