Following on from my post about Odin being signed off as unreleasable I wanted to make something perfectly clear about this birds future and that of other captive wild birds. Crows are not 'cool pets'. I actually don't feel that any bird should be encouraged as a pet as in many many cases they don't get their needs met. But let's just stick to crows in this case.
Corvids are highly intelligent and to give them a good quality of life is really hard work. If kept mostly indoors they still need outdoor aviary time. They need other crows, not just your company. They are highly sociable birds. They need space to roost, forage, cache food, bathe, fly if they can. They are omnivores so need a specialist diet. Yes that means raw meat and yes they will cache that meat in parts of your house and it starts to smell and attract flies if you don't find it and clean it up. And being omnivores their p**p isn't pleasant. They p**p on average every 15 minutes. It's sticky, it smells, it stains.
Their beaks are strong. They will peck you really flippin hard, they will pull at your soft furnishings, your clothes, dig holes in skirting boards and walls. Noise levels aren't too bad compared to parrots but the shouting can be relentless once it starts.
So far, Odin hasn't been destructive as I have provided him with plenty of forage activities and things to destroy. I have to watch his every move to see where he p**ps and caches food then clean it up. He spends the day in the aviary with other crows that is set up for maximum enrichment. I will be harness training him so he has the opportunity to learn to fly when he gets his new feathers.
This is just a very brief insight into keeping a captive corvid. So when you see my posts about Odin please don't get the impression that he is a 'cool pet'. He is potentially a 30 year commitment. If you find a wild crow in need please, please contact a reputable rescue and don't try and keep the bird for yourself. You won't know what's hit you and most importantly it's extremely unfair to the bird. 💕🐦⬛
