Bearded Dragons - Gender Assignment
Did you know that Bearded Dragons (pogona Viticeps), has amongst others, developed a whole new way of eveolving and has done away with the traditional XY chromosones to determine gender?
S*x is an ancient and widespread phenomenon (hopefully!), with over 99 percent of eukaryotes (cells with nuclei) partaking in some form of s*xual reproduction, at least occasionally. Given the relative ubiquity and presumed importance of s*x, it is perhaps surprising that the mechanisms that determine an individual's s*x vary so spectacularly across organisms. Mechanisms for s*x determination can depend on environmental signals, such as temperature, or can be genetically based, with one s*x carrying different alleles, genes, or chromosomes—or even different numbers of each of these—from the other.
In this article we look at how Bearded Dragons fit into this pattern.
