“Gɪʀᴛʜʏ Hᴏʀsᴇs“
Pain and discomfort through your horses’ girth area is abnormal. This abnormality is extremely common and hypersensitivity or tension within this region can be resultant from poorly fitting girths/saddles or incorrect tension, gastrointestinal discomfort/pathology or abnormal posture.
It is really important to check that your girths are in pristine condition e.g., no hair/sweat build-up or cracks within the leather present which may alter the overall pressure distribution. Additionally, ensure your horse has its saddle checked frequently and when tacking up, consider the position of your girth and make sure that it does not negatively affect your horses’ movement.
Next time you feel your horse is being “girthy”, move your hands in a downward direction within this region, assess and record your horse’s behavioural response as well as tissue response. Once you have performed all general checks mentioned above, it is sensible to get your horse assessed by a veterinary physiotherapist before stating a horse is just being “girthy”. Being “girthy” is not an acceptable diagnosis!
This video shows the difference before and after treatment.

That @indibauk feeling… 💙
Dolly really feeling the benefits of her super relaxing @indiba.animalhealth.uk treatment this afternoon, performed to target her moderate ventral neck hypertonicity and hypersensitivity. Used in conjunction with manual techniques.

This morning I have been using @indiba.animalhealth.uk @indibauk to treat a pony with chronic sacroiliac dysfunction secondary to bilateral hock osteoarthritis.
This modality really is incredible for cases like this, especially when corticosteroids are out of the question due to high laminitis risk.
This pony has just finished a full course of six sessions and the results are amazing! On initial assessment I could barely place my hands over his lumbar and sacral regions without extreme reactivity and today on reassessment no pain, sensitivity or spasm was present and marked improvements in stride length and hindlimb protraction were evident. I am completely shocked by the results and delighted that I could play a small part in improving this pony’s wellbeing.
It is just the most rewarding job being a physiotherapist when dramatic improvements are evident ❤️
