Happy Sunday Everyone! ☀️

It has been a super busy month here at ABVP which is just amazing however, is the reason why I have been rubbish at posting content on here 🙈

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely warm weather. I have finally got round to giving my own daschund, Willow a physiotherapy session followed by a little bit of hydrotherapy which she absolutely loves ❤️

Whilst enjoying this weather, it is so important we look after our fury friends to ensure they do not overheat 🥵

Here are some steps you can take to ensure your animals stay cool and comfortable in the summer months:

💧Ensure water and shade is readily avaliable.

🔥 Prevent sunburn - put suncream on vunerable areas e.g., pink skin.

🐎Exercise and travel at the coolest parts of the day.

🐕 Avoid exposure to hot pavements/sand.

🐴Regularly cool your horses down using a steady stream of cool water.

🐶Use paddling pools, sprinklers etc. to entertain and cool your dogs down.

‼️REMEMBER‼️

Animals can die in hot environments. Never leave pets in veichles, conservatories or outbuildings in hot weather. Know the signs of heatstroke and contact a vet immediatley if you identify lethargy, drowsiness, loss of coordination, a state of collapse, vomiting (dogs), heavy panting and overall poor performance.

❔Any questions, please get in touch.

Who else is loving the spring sunshine? ☀️💛

Willow and Belle are certainly enjoying their walks before work!

With the longer days and lighter nights, it is easy to get carried away by increasing exercise or training times for your horses and dogs. Be sure to incorporate sufficient recovery times, rest breaks and therapy sessions to enable your horse or dog to continue performing to their optimal athletic ability throughout the spring/summer months!

Amelia Bevan Veterinary Physiotherapy is here to support you every step of the way! 💙

🐎 ℙ𝕆𝕃𝔼𝕎𝕆ℝ𝕂 🐎

Polework can be a great addition to your horses normal work routine or as part of a rehabilitation programme following injury. It can be performed inhand (lunging/long-reining) or ridden.

ℙ𝕙𝕪𝕤𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕝 𝕓𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕥𝕤 𝕚𝕟𝕔𝕝𝕦𝕕𝕖:

⭐️Improved core strength/stability

⭐️Improved active range of motion

⭐️Improved spinal mobility

⭐️Improved straightness and balance

⭐️Improved proprioceptive awareness/coordination

For young horses, horses returning to exercise or weak horses, it’s best to start off without rider weight as some exercises can be hard work therefore, removing the rider initially gives your horse the opportunity to balance, assess/learn the task in hand, establish a rhythm and obtain a degree of strength before performing with a rider. Removing the rider initially will also help encourage the correct posture to better work along their back without interference.

There are multiple polework variations however, it’s essential you increase the intensity progressively and consider your horses’ physical capabilities. It’s surprising how taxing horses can find basic exercises physically and mentally. Simple exercises can be just as effective as the difficult ones. It’s not about the speed the exercises are performed at, it’s about achieving consistency, rhythm, balance and relaxation!Remember, give your horse rest breaks - little and often is key to being effective and keeping your horse mentally involved.

Once basic exercises are established, more complex ones can be introduced e.g., altering gait, raising poles, incorporating transitions, increasing pole quantity, altering pole distances or incorporating lateral movements.

Tag in your polework exercises. I’d love to see what variations you and your horse find most effective!

It’s the weekend!! 💙

It’s been a super busy week here at ABVP treating lots of your lovely fury friends! This weekend I will be finalising vet reports, sorting my equipment out in preparation for next week, a little bit of teaching on the side and hopefully I may even be able to fit a treatment in for my own little sausage, Willow!

Don’t forget the clocks go forward tomorrow night! 🎉 It will be so great to have the longer days back!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

⭐️P͟o͟s͟t͟u͟r͟e͟ v͟.̲ C͟o͟n͟f͟o͟r͟m͟a͟t͟i͟o͟n͟⭐️

Posture and conformation are often confused.

Conformation is derived by genetics therefore cannot be changed. E.g., bone length/size (the skeletal system).

Posture is the position/stance that an animal holds themselves when standing (and sitting/lying down with dogs). Good posture is determined by correct skeletal alignment in correlation with correct muscular tension against gravity. Correct posture is key to enable your animal to stand/move in positions that place the least amount of stress on stabilising soft tissue structures during locomotion and weight-bearing activities. As posture is often directly influenced by soft tissue structures, it can be altered by external factors such as physiotherapy, corrective shoeing etc.

𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝘾𝘼𝙐𝙎𝙀𝙎 𝘼𝘽𝙉𝙊𝙍𝙈𝘼𝙇 𝙋𝙊𝙎𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙀?

🔸Incorrect hoof balance.
🔸Abnormal neuromuscular function associated with the head, neck and back.
🔸Dental discomfort.
🔸Poor saddle/tack fit.
🔸Rider influence.
🔸In response to pain.

Physiotherapy can have a large influence in promoting correct posture, especially if addressed early and regularly.

We must consider if characteristics deemed as ‘conformational’ such as “sickle hocks”, “pigeon toed”, “camped under/out”, “base narrow/wide” or “ewe necks” are likely resultant of imbalanced posture or due to the horses conformation e.g., is the horse pigeon toed or stand with its forelimbs base narrow due to pectoral hypertonicity/tension? Ewe necked due to incorrect work? Cow hocked due to gluteal/specific muscular weakness? Or camped out/under due to abnormal hoof angulation?

Once we establish whether it is a postural abnormality, physiotherapists can begin to devise a specific treatment programme to promote a correct posture.

One of my lovely canine clients from this morning! 🐶

This is the beautiful Misty. She was referred to me after rupturing her cranial cruciate ligament. A Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) was performed and here she is 7 weeks post surgery and making fantastic progress. Her owner has done a fantastic job rehabilitating her so far!

🥕Dynamic Mobilisation Exercises - Baited Stretches🍎

Many of you will have heard of baited stretches however, do you understand the reasons behind why we perform them?

These are great exercises for improving and maintaining muscular extensibility, overall flexibility, core strength and postural stability.

These stretches involve using a tangible reward e.g., a carrot, lickit or a treat to entice your horse to actively stretch.

Encouraging your horse to stretch downwards between their forelimbs results in dorsovental spinal flexion thus causing them to lift through the back, elongate the paraspinal musculature and subsequently engage their abdominal muscles.

Encouraging your horse to bend laterally will help stretch their neck and shoulder musculature as well as laterally flex the spinal column and subsequently stretch the paraspinal musculature.

Tips for being safe and effective:

🔸 Ensure you perform each stretch on both sides.

🔹 The movement should be smooth and gentle, not snatchy.

🔸 Do not exceed the stretch past your horse’s comfort zone.

🔹 Low, good quality repetitions are more effective than many, bad quality ones.

🔸 Ensure your horse does not cheat by bending their knees or rotating their head too much at the poll.

🔹 Build the intensity of the stretch up slowly and gradually.

🔸 Ensure your horse is warmed-up prior to stretching e.g. perform after exercise.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

⭐️ CASE STUDY ~ Capped hocks ⭐️

This mare presented with a capped hock on her right hindlimb.

The photograph on the left was taken 3 weeks ago after one radio-frequency treatment.

The photograph on the right was taken after only THREE Indiba sessions. I was delighted to visit today and see that the capped hock had significantly diminished in size.

❓So what are “capped hocks”❓

Capped hocks are developed due to either distension of the subcutaneous bursa or the formation of a bursa over the tuber calcanei. This is normally caused by a traumatic incident or repetitive trauma however, is not usually correlated with lameness.
animalhealth.uk can be used to treat many different injuries, pathologies or simply for performance enhancement. If you feel your horse would benefit from Indiba and would like some more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

⭐️ CASE STUDY UPDATE ⭐️

This is my very lovely client Joey who presented to me at the beginning of March with an acute superficial digital flexor tendon lesion to the left core body ~ 40% CSA.

I posted about his progress a month or so ago showing his improvement after 4 .animalhealth.uk treatments however, I am pleased to share his progress with you since then, now that he has finished his course of INDIBA!

The left hand side images were taken after his first session of INDIBA radio frequency treatment, the right hand side images were taken this morning after 8 INDIBA treatments in total!

He has now had the all clear from the vets to continue with his exercise programme - his most recent ultrasound scan showed that the lesion has healed! 🎉

Joey has made a remarkable recovery in such a short space of time. If you feel your horse would benefit from INDIBA treatment, please do not hesitate to contact me for more information.
