"Most horse owners dread their veterinarian telling them that their beloved horse needs a period of bed rest, the horse equivalent of medical bed rest. It strikes fear and trepidation into everyone of us that’s been through the process before.

It would be easy to write a book on my experiences of box resting horses from my time as a groom in international competition barns and from those times when my own horses have needed this situation but I will try to keep this blog to one cup of coffee length!

The most important thing you can do is talk to your veterinarian. Make sure you know the purpose of the box rest; is it to keep a wound clean, keep a bone or soft tissue injury still or after colic surgery?"

First of all, there are many advantages to putting a little bedding material in the horse area. Bedding helps to make the horse feel more at home so can be useful with sticky loaders or anxious travellers. It helps the vehicle smell and feel like home. In extreme cases, it can be useful to spread a little bedding on the ramp to encourage the horse to consider it a safe place to tread..."

Introducing our sponsered rider, Roberta Sheffield, an amazing Canadian Para-Olympian based in the UK🏆🏇

📖 Her Story:
Roberta started riding at 4 and specialises in dressage. At 15, she was diagnosed with severe erosive juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and went on to compete in Para Dressage. She has achievied exceptional success at international events such as the Paralympics in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, finishing 7th. She came 4th at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and 5th in 2022 Herning World Championships. Roberta is currently training together, along with Nardando ( Yolanda Brugman 's young superstar) towards the Paris Paralympics this year. Beyond her competitive pursuits, Roberta is passionate about training other riders.

✅ Roberta's review of using Best Animal Bedding:
"We're getting on great with the bedding. So many benefits that I hadn't even really thought about.
Wonky has had gunky eyes since forever, which I had always put down to the wind whistling past her stable all day and night. However, within a couple of days of being on the cardboard bedding they were pretty much dried up. I think the wood shavings dust must have been irritating them.

Also, as Wonky has got older, her legs have started to fill a little overnight and she is prone to mild dermatitis conditions. Since starting with the cardboard bedding her dermatitis has almost completely cleared up and her legs are not filling overnight. I am wondering if the wood shavings were upsetting her skin. She is pretty sensitive to chemicals and sprays so it makes sense that the clean hypoallergenic cardboard would suit her skin better.

I was concerned that the cardboard might turn wet and papier-mache-like in the stable and cause the horse's feet to become soft but I am finding the opposite. The cardboard is so absorbent that it clumps together making it easy to remove and the dry cardboard is keeping the horses' feet hard, clean and strong.

I am amazed how the bedding stays together under the horses. The cardboard doesn't move and slip around the stable so I don't need such a deep bed to keep the horses comfortable off the floor. They don't slip when they get up and down, the bedding holds together securely."

"I’m Ella a 19 year old equestrian based in Norfolk. I have had my current horse, Laurence for nearly 4 years now. He is a 19 year old, 15hh cob, who enjoys taking part in veteran showing, jumping and dressage. We attend the Veteran Horse Society Championships every year, and have had some great results! We have been using Best Animal Bedding since October and I have been very impressed. Laurence is extremely messy in the stable and also suffers with mild asthma which causes him to struggle over winter. With it being a dust extracted product I have found that his breathing has been much better and his cough has reduced massively. So not only does it make my life easier when it comes to mucking out but it has also made him so much happier!
