Will you help save the Phung Thuong bears like what you did for Dawn?

The most broken bear we’ve seen in years, Dawn was rescued from Phung Thuong, Vietnam’s last bile farming stronghold in 2023. Twenty years on bile farm, our bear care team were shocked and saddened by her behaviour. Dawn was emotionally shut down. She spent 20 years on a farm and over that time no matter what she did, whether she resisted what was happening to her or accepted it, bad things would happen anyway.

We’ve made a promise to Dawn that we will piece her back together. And today, we’re happy to see her confidently venture in the enclosure, feel the grass beneath her paws, feel the warmth of the sun on her fur, make her first bear friends, and she finally knows what it means to be a bear.

There are 87 bears like Dawn remaining trapped across 16 farms in the same region where Dawn was rescued from.

This Giving Tuesday, thanks to a generous group of donors, when you donate by 31 December your gift will be matched – pound for pound – up to £66,000, DOUBLING the life-saving power of your gift.

Please, if you can, give this Christmas and join this rescue mission for more bears like Dawn. Don’t forget, every £1 you give today becomes £2.

Happy 1st of December.
A longer but heartfelt post today :-)
Looking back, I realise that today was my 28th official Animals Asia North East UK support group volunteer beach clean in Sunderland/Shields area this year. In this time, we have removed countless bags of rubbish and ghost gear from our coastline. I wish to give a shout out to every single volunteer (you know who you are), who has ever attended to help make a difference.

Protecting the environment is not one person's job, it's all of our responsibility. Survival of the ocean is survival of all species. A lot of rubbish which is on our streets, get washed into storm drains, then rivers and finally into the ocean. Marine animals end up consuming this or get entangled in it.

Today, we cleared 9 bags of rubbish (straws, plastics, clothing, kid toys, dog toys, food packaging, and a full bag of just clumps of fishing line and hooks).
We emptied the line recycle pipe on the pier and handed to the council to send off to ANLRS (Anglers National Line Recycle Scheme) to recycle. Watching the sand martins, gulls, crows and dogs dotting about the seaweed today is a huge worry as they can be harmed by this fishing gear. Just ask Pawz for Thought about the number of tragic cases they get every year.

A huge thanks to all volunteers who help out and councils for supporting by responsibly disposing what we collect.

My next clean is at Littlehaven beach South Shields, on 22 December 11am. I'll schedule more for the new year, so keep an eye on my Events link for updates.

Why is it called Animals Asia North East Big Bear Beach cleans?
I have been supporting Animals Asia for 15 years now, and their work is to rescue moon bears from bile farming, end cat and dog meat trade, and captive animal welfare, where animals, including dolphins and whales are exploited for profit and for tourism. To learn more, please check out my link below.
As always thank you for your support and have a lovely festive season. Love and best wishes, Vijay. 🐻 ❤️

Thank you to the fantastic, kind volunteers who joined me at this morning's Animals Asia North East UK support group volunteer Big Bear beach clean at Seaburn/Whitburn. In total we cleared 8 bags of debris and got to enjoy a sunny morning and meet friendly dog walkers along the way. Amongst items collected - coffee cups, other food packaging, dog foul bags, shoes, plastics and clumps of fishing line. I had scheduled another clean for Whitburn tomorrow at 10am but have since changed this to Roker beach, 10am instead as we also covered Whitburn this morning, and according to local swimmer Helen, Roker is again in need of some TLC. Thank you again to the group who came and help make a difference today.
Will update my event post and share.

Thank you to lovely volunteers, Jackie, Paul, Emma and Tom for helping with this morning's Animals Asia North East Big Bear Beach clean at Roker.
In addition to the 14 bin liners of plastics, fabrics, and random debris removed, there was a lot of ghostgear, (hooks, numerous clumps of monofilament, a wetsuit, tarp and a lobster pot. The beach was busy with dog walkers, and we spoke to people to make them aware of the dangers of line and hooks to their dogs. These harmful items are a hazard to pets as well as marine wildlife that go poking about the kelp, looking for a morsel to eat. Was nice to meet friendly folks who were keen to attend future beach cleans. Next weekend, we are back at 10am, at Seaburn on Saturday and Whitburn on Sunday.
