Appearances can be deceiving.

Sometimes, a seemingly well-behaved dog is actually shut down and afraid. Is that the experience you really want for your companion?

We are having some work done at home. It will take a couple of hours.

Does Nala need to meet the workman?

No.

So we separate her. Keep rewarding her for calm behaviour and have a calm household whilst the workman work.

Dogs do not necessarily need to meet every visitor, so plan accordingly and keep your Dog calm whilst you do.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

We all need lots of sleep and undisturbed sleep is hard to come by. So let them sleep without interference.

After all, we all get grumpy when we are woken up (at least I do! 😉)

Building relationships.

These two dogs have met before but it has been two weeks since they have seen each other.

We could simply throw them back together again, however this could lead to disagreements and uncertainty for the dogs.

So we take it slow.

We walked together again, both on their leashes. Then once settled, we unleashed them and take a look at the positive result!

A pulling dog can make for a tiring and rather frustrating walk for both you of you.

So what do we do?

Teach them loose lead walking!

Enzo here has been practicing hard. In this photo he is checking in with me and gets rewarded for it.

DM to get your journey started. 🐕🥰

Hard work pays off.

Nala and Enzo have not known each other for very long. So how did I get them to this stage? The stage where they could relax in the same room together.

Well we started by walking outside at a safe distance. We then moved closer together. Then after numerous walks we entered the home together.

Stair gates, crates and individual time came into action immediately. Moments together which were carefully monitored then calm time apart.

One week after being in the home together we have a puppy and an adult dog able to enjoy each other's company.

The quick fixes fail because they don't teach the dog to feel safe.

Work with your dogs not against them and get the results you desire!

Do you have one of the super fast eaters?

Scatter feed, use snuffle mats or kongs for food time. A plain bowl enables your fast eater to gobble the food up quickly so help them by ditching the bowl.

Besides, eating from a bowl can be boring so mix it up and keep things interesting. 🥰

Sleep.

We all need sleep. We need it to process the day's events, to rest our mind and body. We need it to grow and stay healthy.

Puppies need a lot of sleep. So make sure you help them get the downtime they need.

After all, over aroused puppies get up to a lot of mischief!

Some types of training and studying can be on the boring side. For instance, my book below, not the most exciting read.

Is this the case for dog training?

Nope!

Training your dog should be fun so keep it short, sweet and enjoyable 🥳🥰🥳

We have a guest.

Bella and Nala have not seen each other for quite some time. So they had to practice calmness around each other.

It didn't take long for peace to come to the home. Whilst they won't be snuggle buddies, having the ability to chill in each other's presence is a major win.

Slow and steady is always so important. Let the dogs choose how close to be. We all need choices so make sure your dog has them.

It is National German Shepherd Day!

Little Jet has been training hard with her new family and at just 10 weeks old has mastered some beautiful behaviours.

Can her owners give up now?

No way, training is an ongoing thing and creates a beautiful bond between them.

Keep up the training and watch your relationship develop whilst getting the behaviours you do want!

It is never to late to start! Drop us a message if you would like to develop more with your dog. 🥰🐕

Yesterday I had the pleasure of judging the dog show at Markyate. Despite the wet weather the dogs and owners were ready to strut their stuff. Choosing the winners was so very hard but we got there in the end!

A massive thank you to Husky Tails Uk and HT Dog Training for the invite! A massive well done to all those who took part! 🐕🥰

Puppies, we all love them.

Cute, tiny, loveable creatures and everyone wants cuddles.

Whilst they stay cute and loveable, they grow. So teaching them how to behave is important.

See gorgeous Enzo, he is tiny at 9 weeks, but he will grow into a big boy.

So what do we do?

Get his brilliant family to play and train early on to create a well rounded dog. 🥰

Perfection.

Dog trainers do not all have perfect dogs all the time. Same as teachers do not have the most well behaved children.

So when your dog behaves in a way that 'doesn't suit'. Just remember, we all have those moments. It is how we then approach them that matters.

Below I wanted a professional looking photo. Nala decided to do a cheeky wink for the photo.

Is it perfect? No.

Is it Nala being Nala? Yes.

Perfection isn't needed but everyday we train for it anyway but it is important to also allow our dogs to be dogs.

Accidents happen.

Some serious, some not so serious.

How we deal with them is the important part. Whilst it may be tough, keeping your emotions in check is important whilst you deal with whatever it is.

For instance, whilst painting a room, Nala managed to run through the paint and consequently ran pink paint paw prints all over my carpets and home. Now I could have screamed and chased her, but instead I calmly told her "bed". Then cleaned her up, cleaned my home up and created an alternative plan to avoid it going forward.

Accidents happen but how we approach them matters more. 🐾

Nala loves a ball and found one in the field. So, instead of throwing it for hours, I used it as a lure to get her weaving.

Nala gets to play with the ball and train, which is fun and mentally stimulating.

Win win 🥰

There are many different types of people out there and therefore, there are many types of dog trainers out there. I could list endless issues I have with a lot of them but it wouldn't get us anywhere.

So instead I will tell you there are trainers like me. I know, what the bejeezers does that mean?

Well,

I work at your dog's pace. Never forcing them into uncomfortable situations. Nope, I set them up to succeed.

I ensure your dog gets the opportunity to be a dog and to show its emotions.

I help you learn. Learn how to read your dog, how to be with your dog and how to create the best partnership.

I don't have the perfect dog strutting her stuff, I have a dog who is allowed to show her emotions. I have a dog who struggles with the world so I work with her at her pace.

If you want a trainer like me, ask your dog which they would prefer...a dictatorship or a partnership.

DM me to get started🐕

Be your dog's advocate.

Ok, so when I go out for a walk, I am not winning any fashion awards BUT I am making sure my dog gets what she needs.

The vest states "My dog needs space".

Don't be afraid to advocate for your dog.

Some people hang out in car parks to drift in their cars and meet up with mates. Whilst others hang out in car parks to train their dogs!

Car parks are fantastic places to train as the footfall provides lots of scent work whilst enabling you to get the space you may need.

Nala needs that space so we hung out at a large car park and practiced loose lead walking, focus and other things before heading off to an enclosed field.

Car parks are fab for training so get using them 🥰

Our own behaviours impact those around us.

Take Slytherin here, he can get a little grumpy on occasions so we practice calming behaviours within ourselves to help him settle.

How you feel impacts how your pets feel so remember to take some time out for yourself.

Self care is so important 💕

Does your dog lose its head over every little thing?

You could be stuck in a loop where every trigger stacks up leading to a tense and overwhelmed dog.

Break the loop and follow the three R's.

Reduce (the exposure).
Rethink (the approach).
Reset.

Drop me a message for more words beginning with R or if you want to get started on training.

The end of the walk bonus round.

At the end of a walk, give your pooch something enjoyable so that the fun continues indoors.

On this occasion Nala got a lovely raw bone to enjoy. (No she is not eating the carpet!)

Remember the bonus round, the end of the walk does not have to be the end of the fun. 🥰

Physical exercise.

Fun to do (or so I've been told) and is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing.

However, for some dogs, running off-lead in public is not a possibility so what do we do?

Head to your local enclosed fields!

Huge thank you to CoreyT Photography for catching some amazing action shots of Nala!
