People who think pedigree dog breeding should be banned because of dogs in shelters are sadly forgetting that most of these poor dogs are from back yard breeders and uneducated cross breeding. Good breeders take their own dogs back in, keep lists of people looking for rescue dogs, and work hard to place their dogs in the right homes. They're also forgetting one vital fact....If breeding stopped completely, pedigree breeds would become extinguished and we would lose our incredible working and service breeds, who save and improve millions of lives every day. Instead, we should improve breeding regulations and spread awareness of how to spot red flags. This way, people who are looking to buy a puppy can do so responsibly, which in turn would help to eradicate backyard breeders and puppy farms. Over time, fewer dogs would end up in shelters, freeing up more space in rescue centres and reducing unnecessary euthanasia.

PLEASE SUPPORT ETHICAL BREEDERS

WHAT ARE THE RED FLAGS OF AN UNETHICAL BREEDER?
Unfortunately, unethical breeding practices over time have resulted in the health, temperament and genetic disorders which are sadly commonplace now. Backyard breeders and puppy farms are the biggest contributor to thousands of unhealthy or aggressive dogs ending up in rescue centres every year.

If you’re in the market for a new best friend, here are some of the easiest red flags to spot in an irresponsible breeder.

RED FLAGS
🟥The breeder has not registered the litter with the Kennel Club.
🟥The breeder won’t let you see the puppy without exchanging money first (if you find yourself transferring a “holding deposit” before performing a home visit, be wary!)
🟥The breeder is unable to provide any information on genetic testing or proof that this has been done
🟥The mother (or littermates) are not around when you VISIT or collect your puppy.
🟥You’re unable to view the place where the puppies were raised.
🟥The breeder has little to no questions for you regarding your home environment or the life you can offer your new puppy.
🟥 No contract of sale is offered and no information regarding care, diet, or training is given
🟥 The breeder has many litters annually and rarely keeps a puppy

I feel honoured to be able to contribute toward preserving my wonderful breed. Without someone doing this, we wouldn't have the dogs we have today, including guide dogs, service dogs, search and rescue dogs, and many other working breeds, as well as the healthy, good natured family pets who have proven and tested lines which so many are reaping the benefits of in their lives.

It’s important to remember that breeding will always happen, BUT if we can educate more owners, then maybe fewer puppies will be bought from puppy farms, unscrupulous backyard breeders, and end up in rescues, and more will get the life they deserve ❤️

We are expecting! Indie has been confirmed in whelp, due January 2024. We want to thank Norah and Bert Raymond of Sofala Rhodesian Ridgebacks so much for allowing us to use their beautiful boy Eric. We adore him, he's just a lovely boy inside and out. Very excited to see what this pairing produces, there are some dogs in the pedigree on Eric's side who I've long admired, particularly Norah's beautiful Australian Elangeni import Jervis, the stunning Sofala Stellar (who I loved as a puppy), and her sire Polish Champion Aston Martin Cieply Dom. We hope their strengths both conformationally, and in their excellent temperaments and health test results come together to produce some lovely offspring. Behind Indie too are some superb dogs, her gorgeous Diamondridge dam, our very own Isla, and her grandfather Sofala Sabo. We are looking forward to the pitter patter of tiny paws early in the new year.
We already have a fair few on our puppy list but we think this might be quite a large litter, given the scan, so if you would like to be considered for our puppy list then please contact us at [email protected], or [email protected]

EZRA - SIRE OF TOP PUPPY 2023!
When the lovely young Ginger won her crowning CC we didn't realise that this champion girl was also top puppy 2023. Chuffed to bits for Heidi and team, who put in huge amounts of work and time with all their hounds, and incredibly proud that Ezra is the sire of such a stunning girl, who was just born for the show ring! Adore her inside and out, as well as her sisters Lilli, Lana, Billy, brother Jasper, and all the pups from these two gorgeous litters. Congratulations to Heidi and Priorpark.

If you are buying a RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK PUPPY, from a reputable breeder, you can ask for the Royal Kennel Club registered name of the mother and father.... this short tutorial will show you what to do with that information!

You can find out so much information about them and it's FREE and AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.

Good breeders will explain to you what the health tests mean and you can ask questions, and double check the answers with the UK BREED CLUBS who are aware of all good breeders in the UK.

Save yourself the heartache of buying from breeders who don't do their best to breed healthy puppies.

The information is out there in public and easily accessible.

INFORMATION FOR ANYONE INVOLVED WITH OR OWNING RHODESIAN RIDGEBACKS

Please, whoever you buy your Ridgeback puppy from, check that the Breeder has tested for JME, hips and elbows at the minimum, and don't take their word for it, check for yourself on the Royal Kennel Club Website.
Google, KC Health Test Result Finder, and enter the full registered name of one parent, and click on that dog. All the JME health tests, including the hips and elbows, will be on there IF THEY'VE BEEN DONE. If they haven't, or both the male and female are showing as carriers or affected - do NOT buy a puppy. If there are any health tests you're not sure of, query them with the breeder and check that the breeder is known to the breed clubs (just Google Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Clubs UK and these will come up).
Good breeders will do their best to save you from years of heartache and expense. Bad breeders won't care.

Intersting reading. Although a Ridgeback isn't a foxhound, they are capable of amazing endurance and stamina for similar reasons. A deep, capacious ribcage is often highlighted as necessary for the lung capacity needed for endurance hounds, and this is true, but equally important is the level back and strong, broad loins from which the propulsion for forward movement comes. Ridgebacks working in their natural terrain need to be capable of going all day, as well as giving chase when needed with bursts of speed that would get approval from any greyhound! Such versatile dogs. Anyone with horses, or who cycles, runs etc, and has Ridgebacks, knows that their Ridgeback (once fully and skeletally mature) will happily keep up with them all day, seeming not to make much effort at all with their easy, sweeping stride. They keep up during a sprint or gallop without even breaking a sweat. Having this wonderful strength in the loins and hind quarters is something they share with their fabulous foxhound cousins ❤️

The English Foxhound has a curious passage in its breed standard when describing the back and loin: “Must both be very muscular, running into each other without any contraction between them. The couples must be wide, even to raggedness.”

Couples? Raggedness?

While it’s true that in the world of Foxhound hunts, dogs (which are always called “hounds”) are always counted as couples, (with one couple being two hounds), this isn’t the kind of “couples” to which the standard is referring. It is referring to the loin which should be broad and heavily muscled. Remember, now, this is a breed where hounds might run 70 miles in the course of a hunt. In fact, in England where longer hunts were held, it wasn’t uncommon for riders to change horses a couple of times, but the hound pack ran the whole time (and loved every minute of it).

A flat, level back is important for endurance, and the loins must be strong and broad in order to propel the dog at the end of the back. As for the word, “ragged,” it refers to the muscles around the loin area looking smooth, almost as if there was a ragged cloth under the skin.

The English Foxhound standard was written by and for huntsmen over 100 years ago, and the AKC standard has not changed since 1935. Indeed, having these amazing dogs is taken so seriously that a passage on the breed’s page on the AKC website reads, “Owning these noble creatures is best left to huntsmen who kennel packs of hounds or to those experienced in meeting the special challenges of life with swift, powerful hounds hardwired for the chase.”

We have a few English Foxhound friends for helping us better understand this topic: Ann Roth, Kevin Shupenia, Donna Smiley, Pam Constantine, and Katherine Gunter. Thank you all!

20/11/2022

Pups chose to go and sleep in their crate yesterday. We put a comfy mattress in there, and a blanket over it to make it into a warm, safe den for them. They also have Grandma Isla and Aunty Orla sleep next to them every night in their own crate so they can see how happy, safe and comfortable the older dogs are in their own 'dens' too. This is an important part of their training for future owners. Crates should be a safe place that puppies can take themselves if they want to, never used for punishment or associated with it. Once in it, they can sleep safely without fear of being disturbed by other dogs, or children in the household. If puppies need to be left for short periods, crates and strong, well made playpens keep them safe from hurting themselves, ingesting anything dangerous, or getting into a pattern of destructive behaviour.
