December is a funny old time of year for lawn care. Your grass still needs attention - the plants are very much alive and even if you're not seeing much growth above ground, the roots will still be growing and interacting with the soil. The gardener's job at this time of year is to protect the lawn as much as possible and to help the plants prepare for spring.

Mowing: If the weather is mild and the sward keeps growing, it's OK to mow. But please don't scalp the lawn. It's enough to just cut the tips off the grass blades to keep the lawn looking neat.

Continue to remove any fallen leaves.

An iron treatment applied in December will help to 'harden' the grass so that it's more resiliant to frost. Iron is also a great weapon in the fight against moss.

If you're not using your mower much, why not book it in for a service so that it runs like a dream next season?

Have you planned your 2025 lawn care regime yet? Give it some thought throughout December and contact your local lawn care professional to discuss renovations and treatments. If you'll need any new tools or equipment, make a wish list and look out for bargains in the January sales.

A quick tip for everyone who will be getting their lawnmower out this weekend.

Grass is growing quickly now and it sometimes feels as though it's impossible to keep up with it. But letting the grass grow long and then scalping it is the worst thing you can do for your lawn at this time of year. You'll stress the plants leaving them looking a yuckly sickly yellow colour.

Never break the one-third rule. It's crucial that you don't reduce the length by more than one third in a mowing session. That means, that if your lawn is 6cm high when you start cutting, it should be no more than 4cm high when you've finished.

It's far better to mow little and often. Which might mean two or three times a week in May. Your lawn will be all the healthier for it, and it will be that little more resiliant to heat and drought this summer.

What is aeration and why is it one of the best things you can do for your lawn?

UKLCA lawn care professionals normally recommend aerating in either spring time or autumn. They use specialist machinery to open up the soil structure beneath the lawn in order to relieve soil compaction, help drainage, improve air flow and stimulate strong root growth.

All of these things together encourage healthier soil structure which in turn promotes strong and resiliant plant growth. With deeper roots, the grass plants in your lawn will find it easier to cope with summer heatwaves and drought conditions.

There are various types of beneficial lawn aeration including hollowtine, solid tine, slit and fracture tine aeration. The optimum time to do it is spring and autumn but solid and slit tine aeration have benefits when being carried out in the summer too.

Investing in aeration is helping to create a better looking and more durable lawn.

Learn more about aeration on the UKLCA website.

Some of our top tips for caring for your lawn in Autumn are as follows.

1) Keep leaves and debris off your lawn 🍂- leaving debris on the surface of your lawn can suffocate, weaken and possibly kill the grass below. Worm casts will also be encouraged.

2) Cut back overhanging shrubs 🏡 - grass need 4 - 6 hrs of sunlight to thrive, thinning out the canopy of trees and cutting back shrubs will help the lawn through the low light months.

3) Higher your mower blades ⛅️ - slightly longer grass will catch more daylight helping the lawn photosynthesise. Mowing too short in Autumn can encourage moss.

4) Aerate your lawn ⬇️ - aerating or forking of your lawn will improve surface drainage and help your lawn breathe, compacted lawns encourage moss and weak grasses.

5) Scarify your lawn ⛳️ - raking or scarifying your lawn to remove thatch and moss build up will prevent your lawn from being choked. It will also improve light and air flow, leading to a healthier lawn.

6) Feed your lawn - applying a low nitrogen feed with a moss control will give your lawn the best chance of thriving into next year.🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
