We have missed smiling faces around the practice for too long! They have been there, just hidden behind the masks we all had to wear over in recent times. From Monday, we are no longer going to require our team or you to wear a mask when you come in to practice. It will remain a personal preference and we will keep stocks available if you wish to have one.
For some of our crew they will keep to wearing a mask as they either live with someone who is vulnerable or they are vulnerable themselves. Please do not be offended if they ask you to wear a mask if you happen to be in consult with them.
In the meantime we will continue to monitor our protocols to keep everyone safe. We hope things continue to get back to normal :-)

Top tips for conjunctivitis cases from our Ophthalmologist, Jess Starr.

1. Is there evidence of any other disease e.g. KCS, trichiasis, entropion

2. Perform a STT

3. Apply fluorescein stain

4. Check under the third eyelid for a foreign body

Most cases of canine conjunctivitis are secondary so look for that underlying cause. Conjunctivitis in cats is usually caused by an infectious agent like FHV-1 or Chlamydophila.

If there is corneal involvement suspect FHV-1. If there is severe chemosis suspect Chlamydophila.

Getting an Accurate Reading with your Tonometer

There are two main tonometers on the market at the moment, the Tono-Pen and the TonoVet. Both use a method called applanation tonometry to read your patient’s eye pressure, which is where the tonometer measures the amount of force needed to make the corneal surface temporarily flat. At Bright Side we use a TonoVet Plus to measure intraocular pressure. The major benefit of the TonoVet over the Tono-Pen is that it does not require the application of local anaesthetic prior to use and is better tolerated by patients. Both can give accurate readings if used correctly.

The main thing to remember when taking your patient’s eye pressure is that any excessive restraint around the neck can increase your reading. As most patient’s tolerate eye pressure well, minimal restraint can be achieved by using a hand under the chin to keep the head level (see picture). This then allows the tonometer to be used perpendicular to the eye surface and therefore your reading will be as accurate as possible.

Examining retinas successfully - Tips from our Ophthalmologist Jess Starr.

1. Apply a mydriatic. (Tropicamide will dilate a pupil in 20minutes).

2. Examine in the dark.

3. Look at a distance first to assess whether your patient has any cataracts or nuclear sclerosis that may obscure your retinal view.

4. Start at the optic nerve and divide the retina into quarters.

Treating corneal ulcers in Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca cases - Tips from our Ophthalmologist Jess Starr.

Treating ulcers in cases with underlying KCS can be daunting, with the main question you ask yourself being do you stop Optimmune or not?

The answer is… DON’T!

Optimmune will not delay healing of corneal ulcers but will help to keep the tear film stable and prevent complications developing that are related to KCS. Monitor your tear film if possible and add in more lubricants that you would for an ulcer in a case without KCS.
