Our appointments often expand our understanding of the world and the diverse beliefs that shape our lives. We recently had the privilege of being part of the peaceful passing of Aphra, a beautiful 18-year-old Jack Russell.
As Aphra neared the end of her journey, her owner sang the Vajrasattva, a traditional Tibetan chant believed to guide the spirit through the transition beyond this life. We have shared the chant in the comments for those interested.
In Buddhism, death is viewed as part of the natural cycle of life, death, and rebirth. A key concept is the Bardo—a transitional state between death and the next life, where the soul undergoes reflection and transformation. While traditionally this belief applies to human souls, many extend it to their beloved pets, recognising that animals, too, are sentient beings and part of the same cycle. By chanting the Vajrasattva, Aphra’s owner sought to guide her through this transition, offering her peace and comfort as she passed through the Bardo.
The belief that our pets’ spirits continue on a journey beyond this life is both touching and comforting. It reminds us that the connection we share with them may endure, and through these rituals, we honour that bond while offering them safe passage to whatever lies beyond.
Aphra, may your journey onward be peaceful and filled with blessings.
