My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.

However, I was puzzled. Was the β€œcravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.

I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.

Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!

WTF 😳😳😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.

It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.

I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.

According to his website, he charges Β£875 per session πŸ€”πŸ˜§

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.

However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.

If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.

Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

This sweet little lad is a clever boy and picked up everything quite quickly. He was quite keen on jumping up everyone when he first arrived, and although he still sneaks in an occasional jump he has learnt that lying down instead earns him lots of yummy rewards 😍🐢🐾

DID YOU KNOW? A dog rushing at a person to "say hello" isn't necessarily a happy confident dog who even WANTS to say hello! Sometimes they're magnetised to the person out of an anxious need to check out whether they're safe or not.

Encouraging anxious dogs to hold themselves back a bit and start to judge a situation from afar is so vital at times. Once a dog is up close a direct interaction is somewhat inevitable and for dogs who struggle with direct interactions and don't want hands all over them, that's a bit tricky.

Sid says hello to new people very quickly with such strength and urgency it is very clear to me underneath that apparent 'confidence' is actually a pretty nervous lad who has just learnt to cope the best way he knows how right now. It's hard to recognise anxiety that gets dressed up as confidence but often it comes across as "OVER CONFIDENT" e.g. pushy, bolshy, frantic etc.

Recognising that the anxiety starts way before an interaction is happening really helps us to deal with the anxiety at its core, not just focusing on an unwanted behavioural consequence such as reactivity.

This handsome chap is on his way to learning that he can let the fear magnet go, thanks to his incredibly empathetic and devoted caregivers πŸΎπŸ’œ

Wozzie is having a little op next week.

As there is a chance that he might try to nibble or chew his wound while it is healing, I want to prevent that from happening as much as possible.

You can do this by using a buster or inflatable collar.

I want to introduce this in a positive manner and let him know it is nothing to worry about. I also don’t want to overwhelm him by introducing it after his operation when he is probably going to be feeling a bit sore and confused.

Desensitizing your dog before they have to wear it can help make the whole process much easier for you and them.

I’ve been using the buster collar to play the She/He Wears A Halo game as he already knows and loves this!

Today we have advanced to moving around outside while wearing it, to make sure he is happy to go to the toilet with it on.

I have been keeping all our sessions short and have been rewarding with treats every step of the way, we only play when he is happy and relaxed.

Using positive reinforcement and taking the slow and steady approach, to ensure he is ready for the situation, not in the situation has definitely paid off.

πŸ₯΅ DOG CRATES & HOT WEATHER! πŸ₯΅

Last night this guy had me up twice. He’s not very good at communicating he needs to go out and does displacement behaviours like rolling upside down making a quacking noise, a weird burping noise or pacing up and down the hallway.

Despite having the fan on in the hall and access to a cold, hard floor in different areas, he was too hot!

Dogs often change their position and location multiple times across a sleep/rest period. This is especially the case for thick or double coated breeds or individuals who β€˜run hot’.

Amigo and Kanita will stay in their beds in the bedroom all night but sometimes Kanita gets out of her bed to lie on the floor.
(Yes, they sleep in our bedroom! They have the choice to sleep elsewhere, but they want to sleep close as a group).

However, across the evening when we are all hanging in the lounge all three dogs are changing where they rest frequently. With the current heat, despite having a fan on, they are changing positions about 2-3 times each per hour!

One reason dogs change the location or position of where they sleep is to regulate their body temperature.

Another reason is that different sleeping positions may better support different phases of sleep.
Being able to stretch out fully promotes REM sleep- the phase of sleep where memory consolidation and recovery from stressors is at optimum!

Think how about your quality of sleep lying down vs when sat upright! Do you do the nodding dog? 😴 πŸ›Œ

Taking this species-specific sleeping behaviour and the current hot weather into consideration, it’s important to consider whether your set up for where your dog sleeps is allowing them to regulate their temperature.

Whilst positioning a fan towards a dog who is crated is considerate to them over heating, dogs who aren’t crated can demonstrate a preference to move away after a duration of sitting in front of a fan. πŸͺ

It’s not uncommon for dogs to suddenly develop an aversion to their crates during hot weather. This may be due to heat, or even due to an increase in audible sounds at night due to open windows πŸͺŸ

My preference is that dogs have the freedom to regulate their temperature and stretch out fully by being given more than one option of where they can sleep rather than contained in an area with limited space.

A compromise to providing total free range- where your dog can access multiple sleeping spots in various locations and of various surfaces- may be a dog bed in a room behind a stargate, or a crate with an open door paired up with a large puppy pen. However, be mindful the only padded surface isn’t in a small, contained space or that a hard floor is the only alternative to a thick, cushioned bed! A nice rug or padded mat may provide an in between.

If your dog genuinely loves their crate and considers it to be their consistently comfy bed and safe place - they’ll go inside on their own accord and stay inside even when the door is left open.

Puppy Fun And Games At Wagtails

This is a 6 week course that is run on a 1 to 1 basis. This means we are totally flexible in our lessons and can tailor them to any particular struggles you are experiencing or goals you would like to work towards. The training is based on concepts and learning through games and play, which at the same time helps you build the valuable relationship between you and your dog. These classes are about people and pups enjoying the sessions and focussing on having FUN! The lessons are between 45-60 minutes long, depending on the attention span of your puppy! We have both indoor and outdoor facilities which means we can be totally flexible on where we hold the class depending on the weather. No standing out in the rain or snow! We have a large gravel parking area on site for your convenience. Depending on the weather we also have the benefit of a Herbal Healing Garden for your puppy to sniff round and explore for some additional enrichment. We also provide access to a number of e-books throughout the course which supports the lessons and games that you will be playing! Be prepared for homework too!! The more you play the games with your pup the quicker they will learn, but it is so much fun it doesn't feel like learning. WE PLAY FOR A FUN TIME NOT A LONG TIME!
