‼️Canine bloat‼️
Some good info to note, I’ve known 2 dogs that have died from this!
Also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a serious and often life-threatening condition that can affect dogs. It occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas, food, or fluid, causing it to expand. The stomach can then twist on itself (volvulus), cutting off blood supply to the stomach and other organs, which can lead to shock, organ failure, and death if not treated quickly.

Key Points about Canine Bloat (GDV):

Symptoms:
Abdominal swelling and distension
Unsuccessful attempts to vomit (retching)
Excessive drooling
Restlessness or pacing
Signs of pain, like whining or looking at their abdomen
Rapid heartbeat and weak pulse
Collapse or inability to stand
Causes and Risk Factors:
Large and Giant Breeds: Breeds with deep chests, such as Great Danes, German Shepherds, Boxers, and Weimaraners, are more prone to bloat.
Genetics: A family history of GDV can increase a dog's risk.
Age: Older dogs are more susceptible.
Eating Habits: Dogs that eat rapidly, consume one large meal a day, or engage in vigorous exercise immediately after eating are at higher risk.
Stress: Stressful situations, such as boarding, can trigger GDV in some dogs.

Prevention:
Feeding Practices: Feeding smaller, more frequent meals instead of one large meal can help. Avoiding vigorous exercise after eating is also important.
Specialised Bowls: Using slow-feeder bowls can reduce the speed at which a dog eats.
Surgical Intervention: Prophylactic gastropexy, a surgical procedure that attaches the stomach to the body wall, can prevent the stomach from twisting and is often recommended for high-risk breeds.

Emergency Treatment:
Immediate Veterinary Care: If you suspect your dog has bloat, it is critical to get them to a veterinarian immediately. GDV is a medical emergency that requires rapid intervention.
Treatment Options: Initial treatment usually involves stabilising the dog with IV fluids, decompressing the stomach (either with a stomach tube or a needle), and emergency surgery to correct the volvulus and prevent recurrence.
Prognosis:
The prognosis for dogs with bloat depends on how quickly they receive treatment. With prompt surgical intervention, many dogs survive. However, without treatment, GDV is almost always fatal.

Conclusion:
Canine bloat is a severe condition that requires immediate veterinary attention. Owners of large or deep-chested breeds should be particularly vigilant and aware of the signs of bloat. Preventative measures, including proper feeding practices and considering prophylactic surgery for high-risk dogs, can significantly reduce the risk of GDV.

If you are concerned about a dog’s risk for bloat, consult your vet especially if the dog is a breed known to be at higher risk.
