Winter Warning

❄️A Winter Caution….

There are two winter dangers to our little 4paws which we need to be aware of – gritting roads/pavements and antifreeze.

Gritting roads/pavements:

Grit can cause pain and irritation in pet’s paws, especially if it impacts with snow.

The material used to grit the roads is a combination of grit and rock salt. Rock salt is used to lower the freezing point of moisture on the road surface, but if our pets then lick it off their paws, as it has a high sodium concentration, it can cause thirst, vomiting and lethargy and in severe cases kidney damage.

It is strongly advised to, wash feet and tummy fur if our dogs have walked outside on gritted roads/pavements.

Antifreeze:

When ingested, antifreeze is broken down into toxic chemicals that bind with calcium and form crystals. These crystals can damage many parts of the dog’s body including brain, lungs and kidneys.

Some antifreezes are more dangerous than others. The most toxic contain ethylene glycol.

Others which contain methanol or propylene glycol are less toxic but can still make our dogs very unwell.

Antifreeze can be leaked from car radiators and from spillage when refilling the screen wash.

Because many cars are now kept/parked on the roads or in driveways leakages or spillages may be found in puddles where there has been a drainage.;

It is strongly advised to:

• Take care when refilling the screen wash

• Store antifreeze high up out of 4paws reach

• Be vigilant to any spillage noticed around the car.

• Keep dogs out of puddles especially when walking in built up areas.

• Don’t let dogs drink the water from puddles.

• Always wash dog’s feet and under carriage after a walk.

• If in any doubt contact the vet immediately
