Great British Dog Walk at Weston Park, Shropshire

There will be waggy tails and wet noses in abundance at Weston Park, Shropshire, on 19th May, when hundreds of walkers gather with their dogs to raise money for national charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

The walk, which is supported by Specsavers Audiologists, is one of 13 similar events being held in picturesque locations across the UK as part of one of the charity’s most important annual fundraisers, the Great British Dog Walk.

By taking part in either the 3km or 7km sponsored dog walk, people will be helping to train more incredible hearing dogs to alert partners to life-saving and important sounds and help them reconnect with life.

There will be have-a-go dog agility and other fun games to enjoy before and after the walk, and visitors are welcome to explore to explore the wider grounds, gardens and exhibitions of Weston Park with their Great British Dog Walk tickets.

The Great British Dog Walk is run by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, the national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf children and adults to important and life-saving sounds.

Tickets are £12 in advance for adults and are available online at The Great British Dog Walk or £15 on the day. Children under 16 go free. A free dog bandana is included with every adult ticket.

Due to extraordinarily sad circumstances, Jessie is looking for a new home.

She is a Lab x of about 6 years old who has been living with an elderly gentleman. We have no information as to whether she would get on with cats, children or other dogs but she has the most loving nature and would be a superb companion for someone.

If you, or someone you know, would like to come and meet Jessie and hear more about her history, you would be most welcome to give us a call.

Please share as we want her to have the best home possible. We've all come to love her very much

Skin allergies usually present themselves within the first three years of a dogs life.

Currently, atopic dermatitis is defined as “a genetically predisposed condition” which affects approximately 10-15% of dogs globally with some countries experiencing higher incidence than others.

But should this condition be considered genetically predisposed?

🫐🍏🍌🐶 Both maternal diet and puppy diet matter when it comes to the likelihood of your dog experiencing skin allergies in adult hood🐕🥬🥩🥦

A 2020 study found that mothers fed a fresh food diet pre and post natal had puppies who were less likely to experience atopic dermatitis.

A 2021 study also found that feeding puppies a fresh food diet in their first 6 months of life reduced their likelihood of having atopic dermatitis as an adult.

In both studies, ultra processed foods were linked to an increased likelihood in the puppies experiencing allergy / atopic skin signs later in life.

The impact of diet on the microbiome and overall health of the immune system cannot be underestimated.

🥚 THE SECRET TO A GOOD EGG 🥚
Talk about "complete" food. Asides raw milk, I can't think of a more complete food item. First off, they're full of the highest quality protein. Eggs contain ALL the dog's essential amino acids (that ALL happen to be found in meat, as they're meat eaters, hence vegan foods have to add them in...), good quality fat and bioavailable vitamins and minerals (as opposed to the conical flask kind in ultra-processed pet food).

All in all, this makes eggs a virtually VITAL topper for at least dry-fed dogs.

The best quality eggs, nutritionally speaking, come from birds that pecked around outside on natural food sources. Studies show they are higher in the good stuff but also a cacophony of bioactive compounds that we rarely speak about...

"Eggs contain a variety of bioactive proteins that possess antimicrobial and immunoprotective properties— the majority of which can be found in the egg white fraction. The predominant egg white proteins that can impact inflammation include ovalbumin (54% of egg white protein by weight), ovotransferrin (12%), ovomucin (3.5%), lysozyme (3.4%), and avidin (0.5%)"

They also contain phosolipids (no idea!) and lutein and zeaxanthin (vital for eye health, both of these compounds are hard for carnivores to find outside of eating the eyes of prey, perhaps some digesta and some plants...).

The worst kind of eggs, nutritionally speaking, are tightly reared in barns and fed corn. Corn-fed animals throws out the normal fat profile of the eggs/meat produced on it, increasing omega 6 and plummeting omega 3. This is the road to inflammation. And this is before we discuss how they keep those birds "healthy" (I would say, alive) for the 11kwks they are alive.

🥚 HOW MANY EGGS CAN THEY HAVE?
1 a day for a medium-sized dog is absolutely fine. There are no overdose studies of eggs just a load of nonsense about cholesterol that the breakfast cereal industry spun in the 80's that science has since done a u-turn on.

🥚 RAW OR COOKED?
Lightly cooked eggs are easier to digest so dogs will get a little more protein from the cooked kind BUT your raw-fed dogs do not need to worry about protein. They are already getting huge amounts of that in their diet. You are eating eggs for all the other stuff, some of which is negatively impacted by heat. I'm way too busy to be boiling his egg in the morning. Duds gets 'em raw.

🥚 ARE FREE-RANGE EGGS WORTH THE PRICE TAG?
Free-range poultry for meat is a joke so I'm tempted to lump free-range eggs in with them. For the first 4wks of life or so of meat hen's lidt, the birds are too small to do much and the little door to the outside is kept closed. After 4wks the door is opened but by that stage very few birds choose to go out (most have been too institutionalised and, some would day, too traumatised, to explore the little garden... if their little legs don't collapse from their unnaturally rapidly developing frame). If you Goolge how free-range egg-laying birds live, it's not much better (https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/world-news/horrifying-truth-brutal-life-free-7634201).

🥚 BEST EGGS...
Find the person growing birds outside. Ring them. Visit them. They exist and not too far from your home. Ask them do they feed real food. Often they do and offer excellent foraging potential (which will be negatively balanced with increased predation...the argument is what is fairer).

Also consider other hidden welfare issues, such as beak burning (without anaesthetic too). This is necessary if you don't want your tightly crammed, highly stressed birds not killing each other. Invariably organic farms do not so one way to avoid eggs laid by beak-trimmed hens is to buy them from organic farms certified by the Soil Association, which bans the practice (see image, make sure that number is a ZERO at the start. In 2015, less than 2% of the eggs sold in the UK had that number first).

Dogs wearing yellow need space.
Sometimes the world's a little scary for them and a little distance goes a long way.
Your friendly dog is a delight, but please keep them a little further away from our dogs in yellow.
If you own an anxious or reactive dog yellow accessories for your dog act as a visual reminder and are a really powerful way to communicate that your dog needs space.
Consideration makes walking a more pleasurable experience for us all.

Thank you 💛

🥓 Palatants are used to enhance the taste and odor of dog and cat foods.

🤩 Consumers are drawn in by advertising on labels touting "filet-mignon flavored" or "wild-salmon flavor", when in reality, filet mignon and salmon are not even ingredients in the pet food. The palatants are added to give off the distinctive taste and smell.

Palatants are used more often in kibble than in canned products. Palatants may be a combination of refined animal fat, lard, used restaurant grease, and other oils that are sometimes considered too rancid or inedible for human consumption. The fat may be a by-product of rendering, or melting down animal carcasses using high heat or enzymes.

🐱Chemicals called pyrophosphates are used to coat dry cat food, and are often referred to in the processed pet food industry as “cat crack". Mixing pyrophosphates (phosphate salts) with meat hydrolysates is an effective way to entice cats to eat dry food that they otherwise would not

🤢 Animal Digest may also be utilized. Animal digest is liquefied slaughterhouse leftovers and can vary in the same food from batch to batch. True palatants, in the ingredient panel as natural flavors, are scientifically formulated and don't change from batch to batch. Digest is an industry euphemism for a soup of partially-dissolved intestines, livers, lungs and miscellaneous organs of animals, produced using various enzymes and acids. The precise ingredients used are trade secrets, which, in differing combinations, produce varying flavors. Batches considered to taste more like beef can transform a can of miscellaneous body parts into “Beef Stew”, while those considered more “fishy” may result in “Wild Salmon” and so on. Digest is probably the most important factor discovered in recent years for enhancing the taste of dry food.
