What a beautiful review left for me today βΊοΈβ€οΈπ
Today we had Stormy Bear π»
I groomed Stormy when he was a pup at 5 months old and he was an absolute star β
His owners insisted on staying today because he's a big dog but I said "let's see how I get on as I would love to see if I can get the same results".
When his owners left, I realised he was anxious and pacing the floor. I gently encouraged him to jump into the bath but he sat with wide eyes, growled and looked nervous. As I don't force situations and am always looking for signs of distress, I decided to call his owners back. Something was telling me that he was not happy to be alone with me today. I don't take it personally, I know he is well trained, well socialised but his family have never had to leave him with anyone except from a puppy age so it's a very new experience.
The thing is, as groomers and dog owners, we really need to understand the breeds we have in front of us. Stormy is an excellent example of an American Akita. He is true to his breed - does it make him bad? No! He is doing his job !
As a puppy they don't really know any different so it's all exciting and strange but fun. As an adult, they have hormones, they are more aware of the world, they are reserved with strangers. Akita's grow to be VERY loyal, affectionate and protective to their owners, they become almost aloof/reserved in their characters. They don't need me, they don't need us, they need their owner - and only them. They will protect them with all their might, because that is what they are bred to do. They are guard dogs.
I have worked with Stormy's real mum and even his son who lives with a different family. I have gotten to know this breed well.
Stormy's owners came back to the salon and together, we worked hard to build Stormy's trust to get him in the bath comfortably. He loved his banana π facial and @thepawdinary blown away deep conditioning shampoo perfect for double coats as a deshedding treatm

It's spring time ππ·π»ππΌπΎπ¦π
This means double coated dogs will be losing their winter coat and getting ready for their spring / summer coats.
Stella had an hour deshed treatment, shampoo from @thepawdinary supplies to help revive her coat, hydrate, add shine,. conditioning treatment and a blast dry - the blaster helps lift the remaining dead coat, dead skin and helps the coat to breathe.
Stella now feels more comfortable for the warmer weather coming.. it's got to come soon right? π

Her coat is now bouncing as she walks and she is shining like the true beauty she is πβ¨βπ₯°

Sindy π©·
Sindy's owner has dementia and finds it really tough trusting anyone with her furbaby. Her owners daughter in law called me to explain that Sindy really needed a groom and nail trim but her owner is very anxious letting her go somewhere. She was frightened that Sindy would get hurt.
I explained to the Daughter in law that I would send a real time video to the owner to give her peace of mind during the groom.
I was worried that Sindy would smell and look different for her owner but we all agreed it was in Sindy's best benefit to experience a groom and have a tidy up. I used neutral / hypoallergenic products so her scent wouldn't be confusing. I kept her ears fluffy as apparently her owner finds comfort rubbing the tufty bits. π»
The owner was concerned when she saw the bow on Sindy's neck and worried it was hurting her - it's these little changes and things that can upset someone with dementia π
Working with owners and families and understanding different needs and requirements is part of a groomers journey, we're all here to help ease your worries and make the experience as enjoyable and comfortable for all involved. β€οΈ

Pomeranian age 9 months having his first full groom.
I think it's safe to say he was very relaxed and enjoyed his pamper π
Early introductions to grooming for puppies can create a positive, calming and relaxing approach to something they will require throughout their life.
It's very important even if you have a smooth coat / short haired breed that you don't think would benefit from a groom, introducing them early to baths and building a relationship with a groomer helps to ease them in gently. All dogs require their nails trimmed, so a service like this can be carried out safely and fear free during their life when being introduced from 12-14 weeks old πΆ
*Small dogs*
The smaller the dog, the harder it is for them to stay warm. If teacup dogs are not protected from the cold, they can develop hypothermia and frostbite. Even when temperatures are relatively mild,Β teacup dogs may need to wear a jumper or coat when the temperature drops.
Very small dogs have a harder time retaining body heat, but this is also important to know if your dog is a short haired breed or a breed that is originally from a warm climate, they may also need cold weather protection.Β These breeds include dogs such as the Chinese Crested, Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound.

Obi always brightens my day and.. eats me out of shop! π€£
I think Obi is the reminder for New Year.. if it looks good, it tastes good, we should just enjoy it and learn to have balance βοΈ in our life.. new year resolutions & strict diets can stress our bodies when we should be adapting how we eat, our portion sizes and exercising (even if lightly) everyday to keep our body moving. There is always room for rewards & treats.. with a balanced diet & healthy mindset. ππ»β€οΈ
